LZeitgeist: frogmyte: lostcat: I was just reading about 100 calls for rescue from people in New Bern, NC.

Weren't they told to evacuate days ago?

Yes, but they're dumb. I have a friend who decided not to evacuate. If anything happens to him or his family it's his own damn fault. Dude's from Daily City, I think that's why he doesn't fully comprehend the danger. I imagine that's why a lot of people thought they could stay--New Bern's full of transplants who have never actually experienced a serious hurricane. Now they're making emergency personnel risk their lives to save them.

I think people who ignore a mandatory evacuation should be charged with assault or murder if any rescue workers they call are injured or killed in the attempt to save them. If you stay, it's all on you. Don't even bother calling.

Amazing how people are so upset about folks who stay behind in a storm and thing they should be charged with murder or just die, but boy oh boy don't go killing no woman killer.
/Not saying you, Zeit. Just noticing a lot of hate on anyone who stayed put.
Yeah, it's on them. Charged with murder? No. That would be akin to charging a homeowner with murder if a firefighter died in a house fire IMO

UNC_Samurai: I never use Gosling's for the ginger beer, just the rum. My go-to is Fentimen's, becuase I can get it from the local Jamaican place.

Had never heard of Fentimen's so I googled it. On Amazon a 4 pack of 275ml (9.3oz) is $8.37 with $11.73 shipping. Yikes

Murder may be a bit strong, but involuntary manslaughter perhaps...And your example of a firefighter dying in a house fire doesn't quite match, unless the homeowner was warned that a fire was going to start somewhere in the house three days before it happened, and refused to leave.

If fire is an accident, no, and even sometimes, yes. People that accidentally start wild fires have been criminally charged. And if they found out you intentionally set the fire and someone dies? You're going to jail.

This text is now purple: robodog: SpookyEyes: Johnny Bananapeel: Walker: The 150 morons who are calling to be rescued now because they refused to obey the evacuation order given MONDAY: let them drown.

"I don't need to evacuate! I've lived here my whole life! I do what I want. Whateva, i do what i want!"

Now it's been more than several years since I've been out to New Bern, but my distinct impression of the place was that most folks there didn't have two nickels to rub together. Evacuate? With what and to where?

A good chunk of my family lives in eastern NC. I lived there for 4 years when the ex was in the Marines and got to know a lot of folks there. So many people in that area have lived there their entire lives. Their parents and siblings and extended family have lived there their entire lives. They don't have family outside the area to stay with for a few days/weeks. Hell, I met people who had never left the county they were born in. They're poor as fark. The cost of evacuation (not local sheltering, but getting the fark out of Dodge) on top of the loss of income due to being out of work until things are up and running is simply out of the question.

And there is a big problem with income inequality, this country is rich enough that nobody should have to risk their life because they can't afford to leave an area for a few days.

Which family have you offered to fund?

Should the governor be charged with murder if the prisoners who weren't moved get killed in the storm? What about the officers who were forced to stay behind and watch them?

Sure, LOL. But people choose to go on the internet. But their behavior when misfortune (like a giant storm that coul kill them) is forced on them is more illuminating, I think. People can pretend all sorts of shiat on the internet. Ain't no pretending once your house is being assaulted by wind and water and you have to retreat to your attic to keep from dying. Hope all those people have axes. LOL

You're missing the point of both my post and your image.

The image is "we should improve society." The original post was "society should be improved."
One is active, and the other is passive.

I noticed no one jumped in to volunteer. Suddenly it was just witty remarks. It's easy to volunteer others to do what you want done, but everyone is less eager when they have skin in the game.

The guy in your image? He's trying to improve society. The OP? He's just looking for a handout.

Specifically, lots of roulette wheels.

Monte Carlo simulations are named after the casino city, because they involve generating a probability tree and then throwing tons of coin-flips at the decision branches, and seeing what outcomes occur from what sets of inputs, and which results tend to happen most often. It's basically a casino full of gambles.

And you're missing the point about there being a difference between individual and collective action.  The OP is calling for collective action.  You're equating that with drastic, active individual sacrifice like funding a specific family, rather than mild, passive sacrifice like supporting a slightly higher tax rate for your own bracket.  The guy in the comic might support a higher tax rate to fund more services, but might at the same time take steps to minimize his own tax exposure under existing law.  He is not a hypocrite, and the guy in the well is not as intelligent as he thinks.

Alright, let me take a crack at answering this seriously.  Let's say that growing up, every authority figure you ever saw, every teacher, every cop, every boss, was Jewish (picking that one because I happen to be Jewish).  And let's say you're Irish or something.  The Jewish kids gave you shiat, but kids are assholes, so who knows.  The Jewish cops hassled you, but cops tend to hassle young men, especially poor ones, so who knows.  By the way, it seems like all your Irish friends are poor, and all the Jewish people you see are doing alright.  They don't get hassled as much.  You're constantly encouraged to speak and dress more Jewish for the sake of your career.  Some people have even suggested changing your name to sound more Jewish on your resume.

Now, one day, a meme starts going around the internet of some Irish guy who looks like he's right out of the old cartoons that the Jewish kids used to tease you about.  Got too drunk at a bar, started a fight over nothing, tried to walk out on his tab, and walked straight into a lamppost.  He looks like racist caricature of your people.  But goddammit, he's real.  He's not you.  You don't know him, or what his deal was that night.  But now you see your Jewish bosses snickering at the photo, and trying not to make eye contact with you.

So, some people running a website see that this genuinely bothers you, and say "hey, this website is supposed to be all in good fun, and people are using that old meme in ways that cross the line, so we're going to ban it."  There you go.

She's moving off the point of landfall to the east, but she's only a few miles off the coast to the south.  As bad as this is, we got very lucky that Florence didn't stall out just a bit sooner.  She could have easily been over water this whole time; the convection was blowing up before right before landfall, and Florence looked like she was about to pull a Hugo.  As it stands, we get a really bad storm surge & rain event, but just that.

Any beats on how many people will have to be rescued by boat  along the Cape Fear River this weekend?

People had to evacuate a hotel because the roof blew off.

And somebody already replaced the flag on the Frying Pan because fark YEAH AMERICA!

And I've lost track of how many hundreds of thousands without power.

If you are talking about the loop where the seas are calm, well we don't know yet because the video abruptly cut at around 4:40AM Houston time (I was watching) and then went to what seemed like yesterday morning or the day before. I found an article on YT that you can only be live for eight hours and then the system cuts you off. I really believe I was looking at a loop because it was way too light out and the seas were calm in the video I saw.
To wit, the storm is still churning the heck out of the water at Frying Pan Shoals.
Is the video you saw showing calm seas?

Calmer than I expected, yes, so that makes sense.

I can't believe anyone would have rode the storm out out there anyway.

People still insisting this storm is a huge bust, despite the fact that it's not anywhere close to over. Some people seem to think anything short of lifting houses off their foundation is not worth worrying about.

All the really severe damage is happening in places that are mostly not being shown on TV because it's still too dangerous for the crews to be there. This may not be Katrina, but it's gonna be reeeeal ugly once this is all done and we have time to take stock of the whole picture. It's already breaking all sorts of records and there are still days left of this, regardless of how much the wind has slowed.

Not to mention that tempers will flare next week when people run out of their 2-day supply of generator gas and have to face logistical shortages & lines at the one station with power.
