WelldeadLink: What flavoring do I add to my hurricane to make it a Florence?

Water, lots and lots of water.

To those talking about it "only" being a Cat 2, here are some numbers:
105 mph: As the storm made landfall Friday morning, Wilmington, North Carolina, was hit by a 105 mph wind gust, the strongest wind in the city since 1958.
30 inches: Preliminary reports show over 30 inches of rain in Atlantic Beach, North Carolina, according to the U.S Geological Survey. If confirmed by the National Weather Service, this number would break the state record for rainfall from a tropical cyclone. (and it's not like she's done yet)
11 feet: Storm surge may reach this point in parts of North Carolina.

Luckily it does not appear it's going to take the worst case path of grinding just offshore and wind shear weakened it just before landfall causing lower than possible wind and storm surge damage, still a heck of a storm.

Rapmaster2000: If people called me and were like "Oh, I'm drowning.  Please help.  I'm old and in a wheelchair". I would say "Hasta la vista, baby!  Remember when I said the storm would kill you last?  I lied!" and then I'd roundhouse kick some guy for just looking at me crossways and these hot ladies would be there and they would be impressed and would want to totally make out with me.

I see Strong Bad is on the case.

fappomatic: My Hurricane Florence story:

Florence made landfall today. I got up at my usual 6am, made coffee and watched the news. Showered, fed the pooches and took them for their morning walk. After that harrowing experience, I drove down I95 to work in downtown Richmond. The walk from my parking garage to the office was wrought with greetings from other pooches being walked by their MCV student hoomans. I rode the elevator to the 6th floor and climbed the stairs, a one floor climb similar to K2, to my office. I barely made it in the door when a coworker proudly announced the arrival of a fresh pot of coffee (no small feat since it's only the second time he's done this in 8 years). Now I'm Farking at my desk with the rest of you slackers.

I'm exhausted. When will this storm end?

Westover Hills here... when is it going to start?

FunkJunkie: God, the ~6 hours of Ike barreling through NW Houston (80ish miles from the coast) was one of the longest nights of my life

I can't imagine dealing with it for as long as these folks have

Hurricane Frances parked its ass over Florida for something like four days edge to edge. That was fun in a not so fun way because although I had generator power, one should not run them in a storm. I ended up building a nice doghouse for it in the rain (it was also under some steps in a fenced in patio) so that I could have a fan and fridge going.

He's gonna claim since it went from a Cat4 to a Cat1, then it worked.  And the sheep will believe it.

So he's a dog guy?  Sent the Cats away?

Either Oxycodone or crystal meth.  Have you never been to Florence?  Most South Carolinians avoid it for a very good reason.

If you want to make a Dark and Stormy (or any cocktail with ginger beer as a star ingredient) I highly recommend Fever-Tree Naturally Light Ginger Beer, not cheap but SO much better than stuff like Goslings that are more ginger flavored lime soda than real ginger beer.

I never use Gosling's for the ginger beer, just the rum.  My go-to is Fentimen's, becuase I can get it from the local Jamaican place.

Maybe if we had 57 of them...  NC, SC, GA,TN, KY, WV, MD and PA will all get a taste of this..  the pressure ridge steering the storm west moves to FL this weekend, so "right turn, Clyde" will come into play and VA's Shenandoah Valley might become a pool... looks like it might ride the north side of the mountains on the way.  Time will tell...

There's no tourists left. Pretty much every local van I've ever seen there has 4WD and significant clearance. Those local contractors often work in areas where the only roads are made of sand. They have it covered.

I'm sorry.  Knee jerk reaction when someone casually throws the word idiot other people, when they admittedly don't know and can't see what's going on.

Fair enough. I threw that word around, because a mini van, driven on a road that's inundated with water, high winds, etc. is not something that I would consider smart. It has poor maneuverability, low HP, no 4-wheel drive, bad center of gravity, etc. It'd be like seeing someone on a motorcycle on icy roads. Sure, they may have a valid reason for doing it, but it isn't the soundest decision, in terms of physics.

Agree, depending on how far and how heavy the rainfall makes it into the North. If it makes it to the Ohio river feedway i PA and other Northern states then a LOT of additional communities all the way down to New Orleans are likely to see the impact as well.
