rooftop235: NIXON YOU DOLT!!!!!: Well, we are up to about 300 people in New Bern being rescued or hiding in their attics awaiting rescue.

People had to evacuate a hotel because the roof blew off.

And somebody already replaced the flag on the Frying Pan because fark YEAH AMERICA!

And I've lost track of how many hundreds of thousands without power.

If you are talking about the loop where the seas are calm, well we don't know yet because the video abruptly cut at around 4:40AM Houston time (I was watching) and then went to what seemed like yesterday morning or the day before. I found an article on YT that you can only be live for eight hours and then the system cuts you off. I really believe I was looking at a loop because it was way too light out and the seas were calm in the video I saw.
To wit, the storm is still churning the heck out of the water at Frying Pan Shoals.
Is the video you saw showing calm seas?

It does say LiveCam Highlights at the bottom left. I don't think it's live.

Oh, that's not good.

I grew up in Fredericksburg VA and remember Hurricane Agnes in 1972. Flood stage at city dock is 18 feet and the Rappahannock went to 39.1 feet. My mom took us into town and the river was only feet below the roadbed on the Falmouth bridge. To a 9 year old, it was both an awesome and fearsome sight.

I have done my 'disastercam' from my house onto YT a couple times and eventually got my stream cut and then it has looped like what I believe I am seeing here.
Someone on TFD in the middle of the night said NYT reports the whole platform is gone but I have not found any news on the site.

Gonna give a shout out too a great app called windy.
I'm in Charleston and it's been great to see all the projected wind speeds and other details. I got it when I was thinking about taking up kite-boarding. It's perfect for that or sailers. Takes a few minutes to learn what all it can do, but it can do a lot.

To be honest, I would have willingly manned that platform during the storm.  I would be shocked if Florence wiped it out since it has survived stronger storms.

I went through stronger winds in an apartment in Florida and the platform doesn't have shingles, lawn chairs and other debris flying at it, unlike my apartment in 2005.

I guess I'd expect a truck or jeep or tech van, as they're typically better at handling bad / uncertain terrain. A mini van, without 4WD or winch, low vehicle clearance, typically poor handling, etc. doesn't make sense to my lady brain.

Yes, but they're dumb. I have a friend who decided not to evacuate. If anything happens to him or his family it's his own damn fault. Dude's from Daily City, I think that's why he doesn't fully comprehend the danger. I imagine that's why a lot of people thought they could stay--New Bern's full of transplants who have never actually experienced a serious hurricane. Now they're making emergency personnel risk their lives to save them.

fappomatic: My Hurricane Florence story:

Florence made landfall today. I got up at my usual 6am, made coffee and watched the news. Showered, fed the pooches and took them for their morning walk. After that harrowing experience, I drove down I95 to work in downtown Richmond. The walk from my parking garage to the office was wrought with greetings from other pooches being walked by their MCV student hoomans. I rode the elevator to the 6th floor and climbed the stairs, a one floor climb similar to K2, to my office. I barely made it in the door when a coworker proudly announced the arrival of a fresh pot of coffee (no small feat since it's only the second time he's done this in 8 years). Now I'm Farking at my desk with the rest of you slackers.

I'm exhausted. When will this storm end?

Similar to what most people not near the hurricane experienced this morning.

while this sounds nice, it discourages people from calling for help if they need it. Usually all of these efforts are focused on savings lives- encourage people to evacuate, emphasize for them that help can't come get them, save them when its safe to do so.
