the defense secretary supposedly telling people Trump acted like a "fifth or sixth grader."

That's pretty offensive to 5th graders.

Why do the Republicans hate the military who fights for our freedom?

I can't believe a long-term military man ONLY said that. There were no invectives used. My dad can't get through an insult without salty language.

Muta: Why do the Republicans hate the military who fights for our freedom?

Because they aren't useful once they don't make good photo ops anymore. After that they just hope they die so they won't have to pay any VA benefits to them.

To be fair, acting like a 5th or 6th grader is the equivalent of showing real leadership abilities to those who act like 4th graders.

Muta: Why do the Republicans hate the military who fights for our freedom?

Because it reminds them of things they would rather avoid acknowledging... on many levels. It has struck me, since I was a very wee bobug, that most of the glad-handing of the military isn't about acknowledgement of what the military is / does, but about "see how powerful this country is because of ME?" and, in my more cynical days, about keeping weapons' proficient people on "their" side.

The "Mad Dog" nickname is an ironic one like calling a fat guy "slim" or a big guy "tiny", and he's well known to hate the nickname (he only lets people he's actually served in combat with call him that).  It's a joke about how cool, calm, and collected he is.  He's got a reputation as a consummate professional, a well read, highly intelligent, and utterly vicious warrior.  His other nickname, the one that's less popular in the media but he prefers, is the "Warrior Monk".

His most famous quote is: "Be polite, be professional, but have a plan to kill everyone you meet."

I can see him saying just the "5th grader" comments about Trump, by Mattis standards, that's equivalent to a cluster F-bomb from most Marines.

Ah, I didn't know that history. So, he said the words...just not out loud. His rule is not odd for battle or military types. I haven't been a soldier, but my sword instructor works with those of us who are serious about learning, and that is a lesson you get taught. Situational awareness.

Thanks for the info. I stopped researching his people when the cluster farks started, because it was infuriating and depressing, in equal measures.

So... is he the Anonymous Adult?

My favorite Mattis quote is "I come in peace. I didn't bring artillery. But I'm pleading with you, with tears in my eyes: if you f*** with me, I'll kill you all."
That to me is Mattis in a nutshell. We can work together but if at any time I don't think you're honest or dealing fairly, I will destroy you.

No, he has his foibles, he is a Marine after all.  But he's not stupid, and he recognizes there are better ways to do horrible things than shout at everyone how he is going to kill them all.

The main reason I don't think Mattis was the Anonymous author of the op-ed is that said Times op-ed opens up by praising the GOP/Trump agenda in many ways, such as the tax cuts ect.  It praises the basic idea of many of Trump's policies, it just says he's too immature and dangerous in other ways.

I can't see Mattis taking the time out to establish his conservative bona-fides by praising Republican policy ideas at the start of it.  Mattis was known for his entire career to be non-partisan, he'd gone out of his way to avoid anything political before all this.

Jim Mattis is one of only two Trump nominees that I really felt was qualified for the job and trusted, and the only one still in the position.  His original VA Secretary, David Shulkin, was an Obama-era holdover (VA Undersecretary for Health at the time) who was at least adequate to the position, but he was forced out back in February.

At this moment, Mattis is the only person in the Presidential line of succession I feel would actually be worthy of the position.

They only hate the selfish ones who refused to give their lives for their country and are now demanding free medical care and salve for their amputated limbs.  Salve does not grow on trees, you greedy live-a-lot vets.

Remember, the DEMS vote on Nov. 6th. The GOP votes on Nov. 7th.
Don't write it down. Memorize it. DEMS 6th. GOP 7th. Vote!

If the Democrats win in November, it will be interesting to see what Trump and the lame duck Congress try to get done before January.

And by interesting, I mean scary as hell.

And/or funny as hell.

If you really think that Mattis gives a fxxx about fairness and honesty after becoming a sycophant to a dysfunctional racist richboy who is actively dismantling everything that our country stands for, you are deluding yourself.   He's a brain locked militant Nazi like the rest of Trump's cadre and has quite probably signed a loyalty oath to the Person of Donald Trump over all other loyalties including Country and all other previous oaths.

winedrinkingman: I like the part where he told Snaketarry that he was going to send him to Afghanistan if he didn't leave him alone.

Here's the the description of the incident:

Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis didn't favorably receive former Press Secretary Sean Spicer's repeated requests to get the retired Marine Corps general to appear on numerous talk shows, according to an excerptfrom Bob Woodward's upcoming book, "Fear: Trump in the White House."

According to one passage in the book, an exasperated Mattis, having answered "no" a number of times already, lashed out at Spicer, who is an officer in the Navy Reserve.

"Sean, I've killed people for a living," the secretary of defense said. "If you call me again, I'm going to f--king send you to Afghanistan. Are we clear?"

I'd rather see him head FEMA right now if I could pick assignments. He's going to be needed there soon. Or bring back Honore from retirement. Not that either is likely to happen, but I can dream. I can still do that.
