So those two thousand applications for death benefits for deaths related to Maria that were not approved by them..you want to tell their families that their deaths were a "farce"?

FEMA has a lot to answer for. Two thousand death applications. Only seventy six approved.

I think the media is missing a story in not interviewing the familes.

Lou Dobbs knows a thing or two about tortured inflation. Ask him how many case of leprosy are brought into America by immigrants (illegal) each year.

70,000 was one number. That's a very bad year for influenza deaths.

Leprosy is endemic in armadillos and the USA and therefore the vast majority of cases each year (way, way short of 70,000) are caused by armadillos and other endemic causes, including native born Americans with NO contact with illegals or human cases.

70,000 would be like, the total number of cases, not immigrant-caused cases, and for years and years, not for one year only. Do a GIS and find out for yourself. Fact-check the big mouthed bugger.

Oh, well. Why count on people to Google a factoid?

A total of 20 cases were found to be white, not of Hispanic origin. As of October, 2005, 3,604 patients on the United States registry were currently receiving care. The disease is tracked by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), with a total of 166 new cases reported in the US in 2005.

Also, let's not forget...

Not one single US service member died in Iraq. Not even that one family member you might have known. There were no civilian casualties. Iraq was a country made up of hundreds of thousands of crisis actors. It was an unmitigated Republican success. The war is over and we won. We're not fighting it to this day.

Aaaaaand ~30% of the country would believe this because it sounds good for their sports team and that's all that matters. GO TEAM GO! RAH RAH RAH!

He is right. The actual hurricane caused some dozen of deaths or so. Everyone else died after the fact because of the 3rd world infrastructure and terrible planning the island let happen in the first place. Everyone knew this in advance, it's not a shock.

Thank you for making not regret being up this early in the morning.

On the subject of TFA,
It's not accurate to say:
" Only 64 people died directly OR indirectly as a result of Maria."
In a country with infrastructure as shiatty as PR, they can't even figure out who died after a catastrophe, much less how to get help to them.  So this was liely to be an undercount.

It's also not accurate to say
"3,000 people died as a result of mistakes by the Trump administration."
That number is an estimate based on statistically "excess deaths" for the year, and apparently includes a lot of people who died in 2018, 6 months later (Maria was in 9/2017)!.  There is no way to link this number to the hurricane response, since we don't know individually what happened for each death.  Here is an article that actually contains some useful information, unlike 99% of what CNN generates these days:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/study-hurricane-maria-and-its-aftermath-caused-a-spike-in-puerto-rico-deaths-with-nearly-3000-more-than-normal/2018/08/28/57d6d2d6-aa43-11e8-b1da-ff7faa680710_story.html?utm_term=.eb9234e2fa41

Even if the feds' response was perfect, many people were going to be without electricity for a long time and suffer from complications from injuries, because the infrastructure was poor and let's face it, the elderly are more likely to get seriously ill in that situation even with the best of care.  But if you want to put all of this one on the feds, provide a detailed report on how the repairs to infrastructure to get the electricity and clean water back were delayed/botched.  Don't use some bogus statistical estimate of excess deaths that falls apart under close scrutiny.

Another thing about Puerto Rico is that they are always entirely dependent on support from the mainland U.S. and the local government is totally bankrupt.  You can figure out what that does to damage estimates and requests for more money in a situation like this.

So there are two groups of people stretching the truth here, Trump being the more obnoxious, but the other group no more truthful.

For some reason some in the media think that they can win by telling tall tales to make dumb things Trump says or does seem even dumber.  It's not going to work. You don't win against a guy like Trump by getting in the gutter with him, the best you can hope for is losing less badly.  I have a friend who voted for Jill Stein who won't watch CNN anymore because she thinks its garbage - CNN is trashing its own reputation.

She's right - and this is a perfect example of where their coverage is totally skewed and lacking in enough useful information.

Here is a link to the actual report, which is not hard to read and is more useful that either Fox or CNN's shallow take:
https://gwtoday.gwu.edu/gw-researchers-2975-excess-deaths-linked-hurricane-maria

Let's say you make the error bars larger, and the correct count is somewhere between 1000 and 5000 excess deaths due to Maria.  I think that is a reasonable range for a population of 4 million, given that many remote areas had big infrastructure issues.  So Dobbs is wrong in uncritically rejecting the figure.

However, the leftist media is drawing a whole bunch of conclusions and presenting this study as if it proves that the federal response was the cause of these deaths.  It doesn't prove that at all.  we don't actually know how many deaths were due to poor infrastructure before the storm and how many could have been prevented by a better response.  And the actual report doesn't claim that we know that, it's focused on improving reporting.

Here is an example of the fantastically shiatty reporting coming out of CNN, easily much worse than what Dobbs is saying on the other side:

https://www.cnn.com/2018/08/29/politics/trump-puerto-rico-fantastic/index.html

The headline is "Trump touts Puerto Rico response as 'fantastic' despite nearly 3,000 dead"

So the message is that if the federal response weren't so terrible, none of those 3000 dead up to 6 months later (which aren't officially documented, only crudely estimated) would have happened.

But the actual article under the headlines doesn't say anything about that.  It's all about quoting and lampooning Trump and quoting emotional political statements from the mayor of SanJuan like
"The administration killed the Puerto Ricans with neglect"

This is a bucketload of bullshiat. You cant beat a lying asshole by being one yourself.

Interesting how they give a range for the death total.  How about a specific total with the death certificates that have the date the person died and the reason why.  If they really cared about accuracy and truth they could do it.  Instead the anti Trump media spreads this fake news in an attempt to make Trump look bad.

The problem is that doctors/coroners writing up a death certificate for an 80-year old who died in Feb. 2018 due to pneumonia and complications from a broken hip didn't write "caused by Hurricane Maria" on the death certificate, even though maybe he originally slipped and fell during the hurricane in the dark on a wet floor, 5 months before.  Or got dehydrated afterwards and couldnt walk a few blocks to get bottled water because of his injury.

So there's no way to do what you suggest, and they simply estimated how many people would have dies if there were no hurricane and subtracted and that's how they came up with 3000.  Which also means there is NO WAY to figure out what role the federal response played based on that study.  Cant be done.

I stayed in Vieques and Culebra during and after  Irma / Maria. I've lived in these waters for five years. I didn't make for Fajardo on the big island until November after I completed some repairs.

I lost a few friends in the aftermath of the hurricane.  Our communities are small compared to the big island.  People who were already sick or managing chronic conditions and people on dialysis or diabetic did not do well. At least one of my acquaintances who died probably wold have been fine for many years had they access to medicine and a fan.

3000-4000 death toll due to post  hurricane lack of aid and treatment seems correct. I think the independent study (The Lancet?) is close to reality as we're going to get in reporting.

I always remind people who ask that the vast majority of immediate repair and cleanup was done by locals.  We didn't see help from outside (Federal) on the ground for at least a week or two. That's with a functioning pier and a cleared airstrip.  So people who could survive with technology on a level with the 1920s  did.  Those who needed 1980s medicine and aid didn't do well.

It's weird how many Russians have an opinion about the veracity of our death toll, isn't it?  So weird they propagandize when we don't even get a vote.  I guess it's not that they're trying to convince us, as we're well aware of our loss and the uncertainty of our future.
