Jaws was really a great movie. I just watched a documentary about it and it was really a phenomenal production. Hooper was actually supposed to get eaten in the screenplay. I know he was eaten in the book but the only reason why he survived in the movie was because the midget they put in the miniature shark cage to make the real shark look bigger had a heart attack so he wasn't actually present when the real shark tore apart the mini-cage. So Hooper lived. I didn't know that. And of course the mechanical shark not working most of the time made for a better overall movie than if they could show the shark more. And it's my personal theory that the reason Spielberg has so many obnoxious kids in his future films was because during the premiere someone ran out of the theater and threw up when the kid was eaten and Spielberg thought he went too far with the gore and felt guilty.

What was this story about? Oh Noah's Ark. Oh fark that. Did they count the animals that weren't even discovered then or even now?

It's not just a Spielberg thing to have arguably unnecessary child characters, but he does have a thing about absent fathers that requires there to be a kid, probably male, who needs saving so he can bond with our hero. Besides, it's not a family-friendly summer blockbuster unless the whole family (including the step dad everyone hates who is about to die) is fleeing from special effects.

But, you know, we really didn't need the DNA of dodo birds or the Tasmanian Tiger.
