I have a tortoise.  When they are from North America, we call them Box Turtles. His name is Walter.

I wondered into my neighbor's yard one day.  I took him in to keep him safe.  Once the kids saw him, it was decided that "Oh, we have to keep him!!!"

So we built an outside enclosure for him and he's been there ever since.  Although, I will have to build him something new and inside once it gets cold.

The one thing that I learned about box turtles, is that they are not as much vegetarians as I had once thought.  Sure, he likes his bananas and strawberries.  But he doesn't give a crap about lettuce or anything like that.  And his favorite thing of all is meat.  Especially if it's still alive.  Big beetles or worms are his favorite...  But cooked chicken is one of his favorites too.

This has nothing to do with the story.  I just thought you would all like to know that...

It's funny how people assume certain animals are vegetarians. Toucans are a good example. People think they follow their nose to the flavor of fruit when they are as likely to swallow a small song bird whole.

We own a Herman's Tortoise. Small fellow - perhaps 6 inches in diameter as an adult. He got out of the house once.

Since that event, a group of Columbians drop off a briefcase of cash at my doorstep, once per week. 6 of my neighbors' dogs have had strange looking puppies.

Don't over feed.  We had a small turtle for about 15 years.  Mom would feed him hamburger because he liked it so much.  He grew too fat and it eventually killed him.

A friend "lost" his turtle for about 6 months.  Found it wedged behind a bookcase.  He was fine.  Hadn't eaten in all that time.

CSB - I used to have an adult Russian tortoise, about the size of my hand.  I'd let him wander around the yard while keeping an eye on him so that he could forage among the dandelions and greens he likes so much. He liked to wander into the woods at the end of the yard, sometimes I'd catch him as he was burrowing into the growth at the edge of the yard, other times I'd lose him completely.

Whenever he disappeared, he'd inevitably come wandering back into the yard the next day after noon covered in moss and dirt and looking very much like Arnie Schwarzenegger in that scene in Predator (I know now that he'd just dig underground and stay there until the sun comes up again to warm everything up). Upon returning, he'd just hang out eating dandelions among the birds that liked to gather around him when he's in the yard until I'd retrieve him.

Yeah...  If we fed him everything he wanted, he'd be a great big fat guy.
We try to keep the whole meat thing to 2-3 times a week, rather than every day.  But he gets some fruit every day.

There's a workaround: find one of your previous posts with the image, and copy the URL. FARK will hotlink itself... and for some reason, that sounds kinky.

Tortoise can move surprisingly quickly when they are motivated. They are not as comically slow as cartoons or popular culture makes the seem.  My grandmother had a few desert tortoises for a couple decades (they would hibernate in her garage in some towels and cardboard boxes before she would bring them out in the spring). She eventually turned them over to a sanctuary that could better take care of them.  They certainly would move relatively quickly when the veggies were brought out to feed them.

You know, when they taste freedom I'm sure the little guys can move a little faster than you think.

Had a tarantula once, always seemed to be very slow and plodding until it wanted to catch the cricket, then lightning quick on the pounce. Always used to make escapes from the tank and Mom always loved to hear the warning - watch your feet, escaped tarantula. One day loud screaming - found tarantula. Went to grab the little felon and boom, saw those eight legs work faster than I had ever seen them work before. Still caught the little missy and back to the tank again.
