Well, it IS really damn weird the feds would just swoop in and shut down a space science facility with no more explanation than "security reasons."

The only non-bizarre explanation I can think of is a person who worked there was building a bomb. Or maybe somebody hacked their computers and was about to use the facility's IT infrastructure to launch a really big cyber attack.

It's been a week now. The FBI needs to be disclosing WTF is going on.

I'm not really buying the "killer solar flare" theory. There are multiple solar observatories around the globe. The others may not have equipment as sophisticated as ours, but the tell-tale signs of a solar storm are well known. If the sun was about to rip a fart that was juicy enough to kill us all the evidence would be pretty freaking stark.

No, they obviously spotted Giant Meteor and the Deep state is trying to keep it covered up to prevent Lord Trump from saving us all

Is there any way that we can channel this, somehow, with, say, some sort of giant magnetic field generator, so that it deflects and concentrates in one spot? Asking for a friend...

It's the Express. That's the intended result of everything they publish.

A nutjob sent anthrax to the post office because he thought the observatory was an alien HQ.

Evacuating the Post Office smells like a hazard spill somewhere. Maybe a ricin letter to/from the observatory.

So, sort of like an eclipse.

I ditched out of that article before they mentioned the Post Office closure towards the end.

Yeah, now it's making a little more sense. Probably a real or fake poison/anthrax letter being sent to or from the facility. That is a pretty plausible scenario if they closed the local Post Office location too.

If that were true, it would have already hit us.  It was closed down a week ago.  CME's aren't that slow.

Also, it's just one observatory, and there are dozens of them dedicated to observing the Sun:

They haven't shut down these solar telescopes in the US, and they'd have to in order to keep the word from getting out:

Hadn't thought about that one, it makes a lot of sense.

From what I understand, they are always closed at sundown.

The post office in Sunspot has been closed until further notice with a spokesman for the United States Postal Service telling ABC 7: "We were told on September 6 that we would be evacuated along with the surrounding area, we were not told why.

Evacuted to where, Mars?
