That website made me click to "Continue and Accept All". I did, but now that I see the article and the other stories I need to know if that "accept all" was binding. Some of that is pretty hard to accept.

Slashdot already nailed it; the observatory is near the White Sands testing facility. Most likely a classified piece of hardware, a drone maybe, or parts thereof, hit the ground near the observatory and they are cleaning it up and will let everyone back in once there are no more bits laying around.

That doesn't sound like a reason to evacuate all personnel.

Checking the Google news links, all the British tabloids use "Aliens!" as the first word in their breathless headlines. Have they not left the 80s?

It does if the thing was fueled by hydrazine.

Too late. Should have put on your tinfoil hat first. Not it's all in your brain.

The explanation in the article is much more plausible.

Or one of the sun's streetlights burned out and made a shadow or something.

Doubtful

The Apache Point Observatory wasn't closed.  They practically share a parking lot with Sunspot.  Also the local post office was closed.

Yes, secret stuff happens at WSMR, but this scenario only makes sense if everyone from both facilities had been evacuated

I'm going to go with Chinese hacking specific to the tech. Used at this particular observatory.  The P.O. closure is just a feint.
