I suppose a story about the death toll might qualify.

They have. I'm too lazy to find it but I saw reporters go back to chat up Texans who stayed behind. They were not so cocky after the fact.

The difficulty is that they did make it so all the redneck dumbass contingent would learn from it is: "Woohoo, I'll make it as long as I gets enough beer in the cooler."

My aunt's neighbor stayed behind, electing to endure hurricane Harvey. They found him three days later in a partially collapsed house, alive, but curled up in the fetal position and non-responsive.

There was a story on Nightly News last night about a family who was staying because they couldn't afford to leave, and while I feel bad for their situation, I can't help but wonder whether we'll see a different story about them next week.

Heard a woman this morning on CNN who lives on an ISLAND off the coast of NC. Says she doesn't want to leave because "It could take weeks to get back here if the storm is bad".

Uhh, ma'am...that means it could take weeks for you to get OUT of there too. Unless you're a doomsday prepper, you're gonna need to leave home.

True, but is dying of a broken heart or depression better or worse than in a scalding ash cloud searing his skin and lungs for several seconds to minutes while being crushed in debris.

No Snark? I'd go for the "relatively quick" method.

Why I'd want to be in the blast radius if something catastrophic (nuke, yellowstone caldera) were to happen.

Most likely never know what hit ya.

Finding somewhere to stay with pets, especially that many, is a legitimate issue with evacuations.  Most hotels and shelters won't allow them, and those that do fill up fast.  So it's too much extra hardship if you can't find somewhere reasonably close to stay (meaning same or adjacent state).

That said, this person brought it on him/herself by keeping that many animals in the first place.

You understand not everybody can afford to leave, right?  Some people are poor.  Poor people tend to have less options in just about every aspect of life.

Guess who has gone to several Cat 1 Cat 2 hurricane parties literally on the beach, Panama City, Florida back in the early 90's.  Buried the legs of our lawn chairs about six inches into the sand so it does not blow away and party on.

I have an acquaintance on an island.

Their house is "up high" so they aren't worried about flooding.

Yeah....wait until that 13 foot storm surge washes the island out from under you.

Harvey was a tropical storm, not even a hurricane for the vast majority of the time it was over Houston.

Ask folks how that worked out for them.

Hurricane winds don't kill (much).  Water kills

On the news last night they spoke with a 78-year-old woman who wasn't evacuating. She did, however, have a back up plan which was shown propped up against her dinning table:

Last one that passed near us, we couldn't evacuate anyway.  There was no gasoline.  It was all gone 3-4 days before landfall.  At one point I was thinking what color the kitchen counter tops would be when we re-built.  Storm took a turn and we ended up drinking wine and watching the storm pass from our front porch.  With no power of course.

I do recall hearing people talk about surviving through Andrew though.  You don't want to do that. Some of them are scarred for life.

Dying of depression is infinitely worse.  Plus how old was he?  He had like another 4 1/2 months of life left anyhoo...  Go big or stay home?  He did both.

Ok I'll guess.

Some retard who doesn't understand that all hurricanes are not created equal  and that this one has a particularly nasty storm surge associated with it.

2018-09-13 12:44:41 PM
My hypotheses: stay-behinds are:

People who have mobility issues: people with lots of animals or pets; people who are poor and can't afford weeks away from home or work; people who don't have automobiles and who don't drive.

People who have mental issues:  people who have survived one or more hurricanes and who have false confidence they can survive a totally different hurricane; people who are stubborn contrarians, people who have fatalist or theological POV and attitudes ("if it was meant to happen, if God wills it, it will happen, if not we will miraculously escape even the seemingly inevitable.")

Red states have more old people, more poor people, more stupid people, more religious people, and more cyncial, contrarian, alienated people. When a hurricane hits this population, a lot of people remain in the old familiar places. When a hurricane hits a blue state, people are better prepared to bug out financially, socially and psychologically. The Government is a source of help. God is not going to step in and do it for you.

Yeah, that's not really possible.  The wind is the biggest driver of storm surge, Cat 2 winds make Cat 2 storm surge, if it's timed badly with the high tide it might be a little worse but cat 2 winds do not create cat 5 storm surge

Families don't usually let major news networks into a funeral.

Yes, they're called funerals. Or how FEMA paid for their new shack in Arizona.

2018-09-13 12:49:44 PM
Yes.  I vividly recall CNN interviewing some old grumpy bastard in Homestead FL right before Andrew hit.  He said he hadn't run from a hurricane yet and he wasn't going to start now...

They went back and the only thing left of his house was the concrete slab.
