Been watching this morning. Showing the daughters the slow, ongoing punishing power of a hurricane before school. Then we'll check in later today to see if the flag and pole are even still there.

There's a cool video about that platform.  Some guy bought it at auction and is converting it to a b&b, and guests pay with sweat equity to help restore it.

I would be a little worried about the structural integrity of some of the support columns tho.  It's been neglected for over a decade.

Here's a previous hurricane with the tower's owner just hanging out on a lawn chair:

The Coast Guard sells surplus lighthouses occasionally, I remember a year or two ago some guy got one nearly identical to this for almost nothing. Actually getting to it is probably more expensive than buying it!

And yes, they can and have collapsed in storms (not exactly the same design, but similar):

I learned about it the other day, been watching some of his other videos on YouTube showing all the work going into rust remediation. I mean, the basic structure is probablyok, but I wouldn't try riding out a hurricane on it.

Why doesn't someone get out there and take down that flag??

2018-09-13 11:03:02 AM
I don't think the flag is going to make it...

Well Carolina, it's been fun regressive real. Good luck!

The pole isn't going anywhere.  The flag will be shredded for sure.

Pretty cool to see the change in wind direction.  I wish they had the wind speed included.

That's neat and all, but you need some dirt in it for scale.  Here's a screen grab from the highway web cam at the north end of Rodanthe on Hatteras Island:

That dude in the front-end loader is actively working to keep that dune in place off the road.  I'm morbidly curious how long he's going to keep at it.

Not sure how to direct link the cam, but you can find it here if you find the eastern-most camera on the map, just below the yelow overwash warning sign:  https://www.wsoctv.com/traffic/nc-cams

Don't worry about that flag - It was probably made in China so the lead will hold it together.

2018-09-13 11:13:12 AM
So the camera's 130 feet above the ocean. That makes it really hard to judge the true size of those waves.

2018-09-13 11:14:26 AM
Oh say does that star spangled banner yet wave?

2018-09-13 11:14:39 AM
Oh, and Highway 12 at the east end of Ocracoke Island is already gone.  It was there 30 minutes ago, but the ocean just broke through:
