There is even a Waffle House Index that many, including FEMA, use to determine the severity of a storm.

I wonder what FEMA uses in NJ. The 24 hour diner is closed?

They waffle house is simply a stand in for places that don't have greasy diners. But they have corporate resources behind the basic idea concept of 'greasy 24 hour diner' so they can manage to stay open under extreme circumstances. Also, all their employees are felons and scared of going back, so they are more likely to risk going into work.

When they close, all hell is coming through.

It looks like it's slowing down which is bad news.  More rain, more surge, more sustained winds on weakened structures.  If you live in a flood zone, even inland due to the rain, or the thought of going without power for a week is terrifying, you should leave now.

Most (if not all) WHs run on natural gas, so even if electricity goes out, they can still operate, thus why they're able to go 'yellow' and still serve a limited menu when everyone else is shut down.

Full shutdown means they realize even they can't do it.

Sometimes I like living in the NE Megalopolis.  Last time we got anything akin to a serious storm was 2012, and back then I got a trickle of water in my basement.

Irene f'ed all my stuff up as I was out of town before it came through and I had zero prep time.  Basement was full of water, so the cats couldn't hit the litter box.  So, they used my leather sofa as a stand buy.  Lightning hit the pole in front of my house and knocked out all my appliances.  Insurance company ripped me off big time.  Power was out for 5 days and we have a well, so no shower.  Flushed the toilet with water from the tub (which I filled as a joke), showered at work, and ate cocktail weenies night after night in the dark with no TV or internet.

Heard they were calling for 30" of rain in some parts.  There's just to hunk of ground capable of soaking all that up.  Those people are in for a ShietShow for sure.

Waffle House, Walnut St. Cary, NC Circa 1996

One night I couldn't sleep. Completely restless. My girlfriend suggested I go to the Waffle House around the corner. So I did. It's like 2AM...

I sit at the counter and place my order. As I am waiting a guy and a girl come in. They are drunk. The girl sits next to me on my right at the counter.

"Hey, we just had sex! Wanna smell my fingers?" She asks me.
Before I could say a word, she sticks her hand up to my nose.

"Yeah, smells like sex alright." I reply.

"Damn straight there, skippy!" She said and she turns around to talk to her boyfriend.

There was a trucker sitting to my left. We started talking about the best truck/rest areas in the country to get a good looking cheap clean hooker.

He says, "Yeah, I've seen my share of some really shady crack ho's at some rest areas but the cleanest ho's I've seen were off I-40 in Nebraska, so if you're ever in Nebraska, stop by..tell them "Big John" sent ya..."

If anything, Waffle House is a great place for a good story...

Joe Stapler: NotThatGuyAgain:...and they're usually as clean as any other restaurant I've been in.

Name a chain and I've probably been in it at some point.

How many restaurants do you go to where you can watch them cook your food?  I'll bet ya a hunk o'cash that WaHo cooking areas are kept a lot cleaner than restaurants where you can't see the kitchen (I've worked as kitchen staff before).

And note that I used the word "usually".

Boojum2k: I've sat out a couple of horrendous thunderstorms in Waffle Houses while traveling. This.  Got stuck with a couple motorcycle friends for about 3 hours in a WaHo in Union City, Georgia.  Union City is a shiathole and their WaHo was as well.  It was very clear we were not welcome there due to the color of our skin although the one employee that served us was a sweet old lady (wearing slippers, lol).  The rest of the staff and other customers gave us the stink eye the entire time and I think the only reason things diudn't get physical was because we were all "bikered out" and they didn't want to fark with an MC (we weren't in any MC but John Q never realizes that)

Despite me using the term "usually," you counter with 1 out of the 132 WaHo's in Georgia failing a health inspection, and used a video made by a stand up comedian at that.  Sounds legit.  And 4 days later it got a 96/A inspection and has scored above 90 ever since.

I've got two CSBs for Waffle House and emergency services. Both happened at the same Waffle House too, hanging out with same friend, we both worked night shift so days off we would get together, hit WH, then watch bad movies.
#1- Just eating and talking around 2am, when a fire truck with sirens goes by. Ok. Then another. And another. Now we're all wondering what's going on, as the sirens are stopping somewhere close. Then a chemical response unit comes by, and several new customers are all coming in at once. They're all talking up a storm, and we find out that the hotel across the street just evacuated because they found a meth lab on the 3rd floor. Apparently there was a chemical spill, the two young entrepreneurs fled the room and the security guard noticed.

#2 - A few weeks later, around midnight, and the WH is pretty busy. A young Marine and his date are in the booth next to us, apparently just come from the Ball as they were both very spiffy. A bunch of gang types are in the booth on their other side, and one of them is drunk and talking shiat to the Marine, who is very polite and try to defuse the situation. Drunk asshole keeps up, Marine and his date get up and pay, and asshole follows them in the lot, starts screaming at them, then pulls out a gun and fires it into the air several times. Everybody in the WH hits the ground and 911 gets about a dozen cellphone calls at the same time. Cop shows up a few minutes later, asshole has been holding the couple at gunpoint and continuing to scream nonsense at them, cop just talks to this asshole, tells him to go home, and rides off again.

Going to be kind of hard closing up here. Our doors don't have locks on 'em as we're open 24 hours a day and don't never need 'em locked....

When I was a kid I worked for Denny's. Back then, this was true: Denny's was open 24/7, and there were no locks on the doors.

We did close once for a tropical storm when I was there, and we had to keep people inside the building because 1) it was only a tropical storm, not this kind of monster, and 2) there were no locks on the doors.

When Denny's changed policy and began closing for Christmas day, they had to go around and install locks on all the buildings.

It's ok food if you aren't too picky. Some of the restaurants are palpably filthy, though. Considering the fact that basically every time I've gone to Denny's I've gotten half-assed, shiatty food and bad service, I'd probably rather go to WH.

I've been to hundreds of Waffle Houses in my lifetime, nary a hint of trouble or discord brewing. The two, and only two, Denny's I've been to gang fights broke out and there was a massive fruit fly invasion at one of the locations.

I'll stick with Waffle House.

I have it on good authority that no more than 30% of their employees are felons, and 15% have never even been convicted of a misdemeanor.

Welp, that gave me flashbacks to some grotesque shiat I saw online in the early days of the internet.

Rotten.com?

Before them even. Usenet downloads in the 90s. Looked for porn art, tiny thumbnails look interesting, download and three hours later, oh look Nightmare Fuel.

Ya, I used to grab huge amounts of pic from Usenet, then go through them later.  Until I hit one called prettyme or beautifulme. Stopped mass downloading at that point.

They film the show in a small town in GA. Just happens to be the "home" state of Waffle House.

I've been to Senoia a couple times, nice place.  However, they do film TWD in a lot of other parts of Georgia.  Ozark is filmed here as well (they recently blew something up near me for a shot, I think a boat house.  Black Panther and other titles, too.  And all the "town square" scenes in My Cousin Vinny were filmed in Monticello, GA (Mont-i-sello, here).  Came up on the town sqwuare on a road trip and it gave me such a feeling of deja vu I had to stop.  I knew I'd seen it before but knew I'd never been there, lol.

This utterly forgettable scene from Smokey and the Bandit was filmed about a minute from my house.  Ironically, commerical vehicles like that are banned on this (Buford Dam Rd, just about on the dam itself coming from the Forsyth County side).  I am on this road almost daily.

Come to think of it, my GF's son works at a trendy restaurant in Buford, Ga, and he said Jason Bateman came in and wanted to rent the whole place for the cast and crew of Ozark.  However, his offer was ridiculously low compared to what the owner would make by just staying open for regular folks so the owner told him no (the owner is the nicest person you'll ever meet).  Apparently Mr. Bateman was none too pleased some "nobody" turned down an offer where he'd lose money for no gain.

Well, that's what the kid says, anyhow.  He's been known to exaggerate and embellish stories.

Cannot recommend Golden Malted highly enough. They are, BAR NONE, the best waffle and pancake batter out there. Super super fine, well flavored, crispy (that tip with the sugar I'm going to try next time) on the outside, tender in the middle. I guarantee you have never had finer waffles and pancakes than you get from Golden Malted.

First Battle of Manassas/Bull Run. People came out with picnic baskets and lounging chairs to watch the battle, like we would watch Medieval Times. Thought the Union would whip them and rebellion over. When the Johnny Rebs were the ones doing the whipping, the crowd noticed the battle was getting too close, and retreated in a panic.

I think this photo was 'shopped. I've never seen a line this long for a Waffle House. Not even on a Sunday after church...

Stopped in a Bojangles around the border of Virginia/North Carolina - Sunday, about 2-4pm - everybody inside was dressed in their sunday best - scary...

Thanks, Waffle House, that's all I needed to give my best friend. Her mom lives 3 miles from the coast in Wilmington and doesn't want to leave.

NotThatGuyAgain: I don't do WaHo very often but the times I have I've rarely had a bad experience.  It's not easy to fark up what they serve, it's consistent, and they're usually as clean as any other restaurant I've been in.  And the servers and staff are almost always very friendly.

People make fun of Waffle House bc it's primarily a Southern chain. I've been to diners all over the country that we were way more f*cked up than your typical  Waffle House, and seemed to have just as many drunken scenes. We just hear about WH more often because there's like 19 bajillion of them.

GardenWeasel: Boojum2k: I've sat out a couple of horrendous thunderstorms in Waffle Houses while traveling. Kinda relaxing, watching rain pound on the glass so hard you can't see the parking at all, thunder shaking the building, and the staff just cheerfully went about their business and I had coffee and food until storm passed.
When they close, all hell is coming through.

I want to see the cast of The Walking Dead come across an open WH during the finale.

My God that's...that's BRILLIANT.

Angry Drunk Bureaucrat: This would be a Code Red on FEMA's Waffle House Index, if you DNRTFA.

are you sure it wouldn't code brown (pants)

Psylence: RoFaWh: sliced thin, and cooked as one does Beef Strogranoff.

Get out.

That is not how one prepares a proper Stroganoff.

/at least how I am accustomed
//and it gets raves from people who distrust the dish

*begs you to post the recipe in the food tab* I loooove stroganoff and need an idiot proof, delicious recipe real people have eaten.

There are hardly any fat people. Either this photograph isn't real or it's not in the US.

damageddude: There is even a Waffle House Index that many, including FEMA, use to determine the severity of a storm.

I wonder what FEMA uses in NJ. The 24 hour diner is closed?

/seriously, we don't have any Waffle Houses

Diners don't close in NJ... The staff count just gets lower as the disaster progresses. If you walk into an empty one, you're the cook for the next 2 hours.

Make sure to ask why there aren't any pancakes on the menu next time you're in a Waffle House.

I'll see what I can do, but this is my mothers recipe...that she makes once a year *just for my birthday* mind you. It's coming up in a couple weeks, and her written recipe has a lot of addendums, iirc. But I'll see if I can get an annotated version.

It involves a giant piece of beef tenderloin filet roast though; you want it to melt in your mouth with that sour cream sauce.

Never been east of Colorado. Really want to try a Waffle House.  Gotta be better than Lennys Dennys.

Every Waffle House I've ever been in smells like a mop bucket.

Ohh, no, I don't want to take your special memory. Keep it for yourself. :) Sometimes it's all we have in life -- those memories.
