Are the animals starting to fight back? Black bears and cougars attacking people in the last few years after not having any recorded acts for over 100 years. A King book is starting to play out in real life.

It's suburban and exurban expansion into their previously undisturbed territory.

More people in their territory combined with less wild game for them to eat. Often times they will just go after pets and livestock. But sometimes a person is in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I think there was another case where two mountain bikers were attacked by a mountain lion.  When the one not being attacked started to run for help, the mountain lion attacked him instead and killed him.  Crazy stuff.  Never run away from a mountain lion, back away slowly.

Reminds me of some video I saw once were these villagers wore masks on the back of their heads so tigers wouldn't pounce on them.

I went in to a black bear's cave by accident.  He refused to follow my commands so I shot him.  Now, I'm the bad guy.  I gotta get pik-a-nic baskets for his kids and widow.  If he was so smart, why didn't he get down on the ground and take off that silly hat?

When hiking alone in the wilderness always bring something to protect yourself even if it's just a sharp stick.

Eaten alive by a wild animal.  Now that's nightmare fuel.

You seem like the perfect example of a person who might be standing at a counter talking to other people.  I led to believe the Internet would allow people better access to accurate information.  You are ruining it.

That was a weird one. The cougar stalked them and didn't give up when they plopped her with a bike. I've always thought they preferred 1:1 hunts and back off when you fight back.

I had this discussion with some friends/family recently at a wedding.  Smart phones/internet has just plain ruined those kinds of conversations.  In 10 seconds someone looks it up and says 'oh well it would seem that the actual case is....'.  Not fun at all.  Now what are we supposed to talk about?

Yup. I was just wilderness backpacking in Yosemite. I don't care that i knew black bears scare easily and mountain lions are extremely rare to encounter. I slept with my knife on me every night

Wikipedia is not a source. The incidents of black bear attacks have gone up dramatically in the past 20 years.  The lack of food and destruction of habitat combined with people that have no idea that wildlife is called wild for a reason.  I live and walk in an area with black bears and have run into over 100 without an issue. I still hike with just a walking stick and my dogs. Granted when in brown bear territory I carry a .454, brown bears are way different.

Gosh I'm grouchy today.  Sorry folks.

I've run into one cougar (panther) and several black bears.  Two of the black bears did fake charges (both in Glacier), which I didn't think they did.  Scared the shiat out of me.

You said there had been no recorded attacks in the last 100 years.  This is undeniably false.  I'm not quibbling with your overall message, just asking that you take two minutes to check before asserting a "fact" that "feels" right.

Had a grizzly run at me in glacier. Before Obama changed the law on carrying handguns in national Parks. Hit it with spray and charged back, never want to do again.

Up in New Hampshire, was working as a dispatcher/supervisor for a trucking company. Late one night our yard driver calls me on the radio that someone's black Labrador was running around the yard.

About two minutes later he calls back "It's not a dog! It's not a farking dog!"

No yard drivers were harmed, black bear decided to wander back off into the woods after getting honked at.

Yes, and this is the fate of most creatures including our ancestors. Remembering past lives would be the real nightmare.
