I'm actually glad that there is not enough news to keep us from seeing article after article about this hurricane.  On one level, at least.

Up to 40" of rain may come to some places. The guys on the Weather Channel are talking about this hurricane the same way they talked about Katrina, like they're sure an epic disaster is on the way. Stay safe everyone in it's path.

In my experience hurricanes are usually a major wind event OR a major rain event, not both at the same time like this one.

Irene in 99 was a rain event and barely a hurricane.  Wilma was a wind event where it also happened to rain a bit

Eyewall replacement is complete, new core is 30 miles across. Disturbing new models today. Both GFS and Euro models show possible stall near Wilmington for a day and then a southward tilt with landfall between Charlotte and Savannah. Was walking past the TV and the local weather man had some projection of it possibly being a depression by the time it hits Raleigh.  Didn't catch much else, but I'm guessing it's slow speed is gonna make it fizzle as it grinds our coastal plain?

Hazel seemed to blitzkrieg, from the Caribbean all the way into Canada.  But I wasn't around for that, so I don't know.

No.  Hazel was a lady.  Florence is a sloppy wet whore, who will destroy your world and all that you love.

I think you've got that backwards. Hazel destroyed 15,000 buildings and still had 100 mph winds by the time it reached Raleigh. Florence will be bad but not that bad. After Hazel the weather service reported "all traces of civilization on the immediate waterfront between the state line and Cape Fear were practically annihilated." By the time Hazel reached Canada it was still strong enough to kill 81 people.

Florence isn't as strong but the fear is that the storm's forward momentum is going to stall once it makes landfall which means that the rain will cause major flooding. Hazel was a stronger storm but moved quickly and so generally kept rainfall comparatively low.

Don't know about Hazel being stronger, Florence is going to be, or come close to the first cat 5 in the northern Atlantic. She's going to lose power before and during landfall but might still be a hurricane nearly 2 days later.

This is NOT a good thing. It might reduce the storm surge, but even Harvey didn't have the core of its circulation stalled over water for days.

I'm thinking that would make the surge last longer.  And most definitely wider spread.

In fairness, by the time it gets that far inland, it will be nothing but a big rain storm.  It's not like Drew needs to board up his windows.

It would also lower the maximum height/inland penetration. Whether that would offset the increased duration or not is debatable, but the slower over-water decay and resulting increased rainfall may make the surge damage look trivial in comparison.

Unless you're both well inland and above a conservative multiple of the local historical high-water mark, please leave while you still can.

I thought that with Irene in Albany and yet one of our windows blew in, the GE campus got evacuated because the Mohawk popped its banks, and shiat generally went haywire.

Had the good fortune of staying on oak island, bout 30 miles east of wilmington.
Nice old house which had been relocated across the street from the atlantic after hazel in 1954.  I spent an evening with a book about hazel and the way it completely changed oak island. I was there in june, really a nice place but so many single story places and "mobile" homes. Said it before but itll be fascinating to see how just-completed 3 story direct beachfront houses with the broad side facing the ocean get through this, or not...

I feel like people forget how completely inept the Trump administration and FEMA was for hurricane Irma. This is going to be many times worse, and due to the scale and track of the storm, the government will be totally ineffective. It doesn't matter that it's happening on the continental United States, they don't have the knowledge or ability to respond to disasters.
