On the Iraq Bugout:
That happened to me once; Only it wasn't a country, it was a 1986 Ford Taurus, shot all to hell; and it wasn't a handover....I just left the keys in it in East St Louis. Took a few days, but somebody finally stole it.

Grumpy Liberal: I don't care that Iraq is free and it's citizens are no longer being brutalized by a dictator. I'm still gonna be a one note pessimist. (grumble grumble)"

Look, they are on the road to freedom. This is what changes, they call the shots now. They are in charge of their country.

This is HUGE.

I thought you'd at least be happy for Iraq. Say what you want about the War and our reasons for going into war, but this is a good thing.

I mean, can't you see that?

Really? I was unaware of that. I just know that we farked it up a bunch during "Shock and Awe", and it took a long, long time to start getting it back up. If everything is up and running again, then that's good.

It's not your fault. Our mainstream news hasn't been covering the whole story. They leave out much of the good we've done and are doing. They also leave out the appreciation Iraqi citizens have been showing for our efforts.

I've had a small amount of contact with active duty soldiers who served under me in Gulf War 1. Their biggest complaint to me is that American media fails to paint an accurate picture.

"I dont have the answer to your question because that is a very complicated and intricate question."

No kidding. Then why do your bussied here say "saddam was a bad guy, it was good to get rid of him. That's not very complicated reasoning. Maybe it was because their complicated reasons for invasion have been shown to be false...

"However there were several reasons fueling the invasion of Iraq including to get rid of Sadam."

All based on WMD and his threat to the US. He had no WMD, and he was no threat. Powell said before the war that the embargo was still working because Saddam had not built up is WMD stockpile. Then when Saddam becomes the target du jour, all of a sudden they have tons of the stuff and he's a threat? Whatever.

"One of which was the direct threat that the country posed upon us."

No he was not. Before 9/11 Condeleeza Rice and Powell both said he was not a threat. Now you say he is? He wasn't a threat.

"Although another question would be, why keep arguing against it and asking why we are there because we are there so we might as well accept it and move on."

Well, let's look at what that sort of reasoning would have gotten us throughout American history, had people not questioned the status quo and "moved on."

Slavery. It's was a fact prior to 1865, why question it? Let's just accept it, and move on.

Women can't vote (including those with guns). The Constitution said before the early 1900's that only men could vote. Why Question it? Women, you just stay in the kitchen and aceept it, and move on.

Jim Crow laws. Sorry black people, if your grandad couldn't vote, then you can't either. Never mind that he was a slave, and had no right to vote. Just accept it and move on. Can't pay your poll tax? Can't pass the literacy test? well, just accept it and move on. Move along no, move along.

Segregation. Sorry Rosa Parks, sorry students in Birmingham, you can't mingle with us white folks. Move along to your black schools and the back of the buses. And don't even think about drinking out of my fountain or eating in my restaurant. Move along now, you hear?

Consumer rights. One oil company? One bank? One retail store? No competition? We know that's not very capitalistic, but move along people. Just accept it and move along. Standard oil is good for you.

Child labor. What do you mean your 12 year old wants an education? What do you mean he's tired of working 80 hours a week for next to nothing? Move along.

Inductrial hygeine. You don't like working in the mines 12 hours a day six days a week and getting black lung? Come on now, just accept it and move along.

You getting the picture? If we just accept this, it sets the precedent for any president to trump up reasons to invade a country he doesn't like. And to send Amerian men and women to fight in a war that has no justification other than "saddam's a bad guy" or "just accept it American public, move along."

"Would you rather
1) Bush get re-elected, and go on an invasion spree, killing thousands, and pissing off the entire world or
2) Kerry get elected, and bring an era of peace and prosperity to the entire universe...."

Perhaps you and you neo-commm buddies have a jaded view of Kerry. Here's a reminder of where your hero really stands:

"[W]e urge you, after consulting with Congress, and consistent with the U.S. Constitution and laws, to take necessary actions (including, if appropriate, air and missile strikes on suspect Iraqi sites) to respond effectively to the threat posed by Iraq's refusal to end its weapons of mass destruction programs."
-- From a letter signed by Joe Lieberman, Dianne Feinstein, Barbara A. Milulski, Tom Daschle, & John Kerry among others on October 9, 1998

"The Iraqi regime's record over the decade leaves little doubt that Saddam Hussein wants to retain his arsenal of weapons of mass destruction and to expand it to include nuclear weapons. We cannot allow him to prevail in that quest. The weapons are an unacceptable threat."
-- John Kerry, 10/9/02

"(W)e need to disarm Saddam Hussein. He is a brutal, murderous dictator, leading an oppressive regime. We all know the litany of his offenses. He presents a particularly grievous threat because he is so consistently prone to miscalculation. ...And now he is miscalculating Americas response to his continued deceit and his consistent grasp for weapons of mass destruction. That is why the world, through the United Nations Security Council, has spoken with one voice, demanding that Iraq disclose its weapons programs and disarm. So the threat of Saddam Hussein with weapons of mass destruction is real, but it is not new. It has been with us since the end of the Persian Gulf War."
-- John Kerry, 1/23/03

And now, Afgahnistan terrorist attacked us, and we ended up going after Iraqi terrorists. Why? Cause they were allies.

They didn't collaborate on 9/11 but they did collaborate. Saddam knew the 9/11 attacks were coming and did nothing. He also allowed an Al-Queada operative (Al-Zarqawi) to operate in Iraq and also provided medical attention to him through a hospital that his son ran.

Yes, for a very good reason. They're in Iraq.

Exactly, they're in Iraq.

"And how can any european country be part of the euro pussy belt if they are fighting overseas in the war on terror, regardless of where that is? Does it matter if it is Iraq or Afghanistan? Apparently only Iraq matters, right Ohm, let's disregard all other contributions."

Because the thread is about Iraq. Did Bremmer leave Afghanistan? Is the article at all about Afghanistan? Is Afghanistan even mentioned in the article? No.

Let's completely disregard the topic and run elsewhere to get material for your tripe. Obviously Iraq and Afghanistan are two different things, otherwise the Euro Pussy Belt would have been involved in Iraq too, now wouldn't they?

Bush Hails Transfer of Power to Iraqis

ISTANBUL, Turkey (AP) - President Bush celebrated the early transfer of political power to Iraqis Monday, declaring that "the Iraqi people have their country back."

Bush's statement came 15 months after he ordered the invasion against Saddam Hussein and his country. Bush stood with Prime Minister Tony Blair, a key coalition partner, at a NATO summit here.

Actually, I'm fairly certain Germany declared war on us after we declared war on Japan. False analogy.

Second: are you even reading the posts of many who are oft acussed of being 'liberal' on this board? Like, oh, for instance.. mine? You seem to be going "Oh, why are all of you liberals so pissed that iraq is doing well!" And seem to be ignoring the ones that are happy that things seem to be going on the right track.

But as I said to Cynasis (which he didn't respond to), it's way, way, WAY too soon to say that "Democracy has won" in Iraq. If they make it to their first election and actually get to pick a government of their choosing, and *that* stays stable, then it might be safe to say that. But there are many ways that this could go still, and many of them unpleasant, and it's foolish to say "Welp, we've won!" at this stage of the game.

bunnymud Oh, yes, the Liberals are the party of hate (Nevermind that, as far as I can tell, there is no 'liberal' party.) That's why so many of the liberals in the threads about the beheadings, and the like, were calling for massive slaughter of people in that region. (The "Nuke 'em!" comments, and the like.)

I'll grant you that I'm sure plenty of liberals are hate filled.. many of them do seem to hold a great deal of hatred for Bush, which saddens me. But to pretend the 'conservative party' (WTF?) isn't just as filled with hatred is, well foolish and shortsited, in my mind.

If you are going to argue a point, use examples that are pertinent to the discussion. What are we going to do refuse to sit at the back of a bus until they stop the war? Those were all noble causes that you listed to fight against the system, but there is nothing you can do here and that is why you find it important to cry and scream for no reason, because you wouldn't have the balls to do anything in a real fight. If you don't like it vote and shutup.

How seriously are we supposed to take a blog binnster?

As seriously as you want. Frankly, I don't give a damn.

And why use something that may not be taken seriously to paint a negative picture of what's happening in Iraq?

I didn't paint any picture, negative or otherwise. Someone asked if the new government would be seen as puppets by the Iraqi people so I linked to a blog by someone more qualified to answer the question than myself. I didn't form his opinion, I just linked to it. Whether you wish to take seriously the opinion of someone actually living through the situation is up to you.

chickwithagun: Go see the movie, then judge it. Until you have seen it, you have no basis to claim it's crap.

I expected it to be full of rants and raves with little or no evidence. But it made some very clear and concise points, each of which was well documented. I expected it to be far more controversial than it actually was.

But you'll never know, if you choose to remain ignorant of the movie. It sure makes it easy to denounce though, doesn't it?
