An autoplay video you can't close and which stays onscreen when you try to scroll the page?
Screw you, website. That's a dick move, no matter what your politics are.

Folks generally aint evil. However riding bicycles thru a land known for political instability is not a good idea.

2018-08-16 02:24:36 AM
It's not ISIS territory. Headlines make it sound like they were blithely biking through Syria. They were going through Tajikistan, with other cyclists. I mean, they were naive with their talk about evil not existing, but it's not like Tajikistan doesn't get a fair amount of tourism.

Crazy story, terrible website. How about the story from a less biased source?

Yay, Some Guy has a dumb excuse to paint all liberals with a broad brush because two naive dipshiats decided to go all Sheltering Sky in central Asia.

I had to check to see if this wasn't the Onion. I Lol'd a few times, first seeing their pic and then the quotes from his blog. My lord I guess you can't make stuff like this up.

He was a good friend and co-worker of a college friend of mine. She had nothing but good things to say about how kind and caring he was. It's such a tragedy. I've had the opportunity to travel a lot, and I agree with him: everywhere you go, most people really are kind. Unfortunately, a few asshats ruin things.

2018-08-16 04:13:33 AM
i'm gonna ruffle some jimmies with this one but....this whole biking/hiking/hitchhiking thing is something you really only see from privileged white folks who apparently don't need to worry about income or bills or whatever.   just lah-di-dah thru wherever the hell they wanna go to prove whatever they're gonna prove.

At least they died doing what they loved: screaming and begging for their lives.

The only way to be safe from ISIS is to do what we conservatives do: hide under our beds all day while furiously masturbating with our gun collections.

Some conservatives have framed the tragedy as a cautionary tale about not just the perils of travel but also naivete in general.

Islamist terrorists are conservatives.

Not necessarily so. My cousin and his wife gave up their jobs and spent a year or so RVing around the west while homeschooling their kids. They aren't rich. He builds musical instruments, plays in a band and does odd jobs. People can do what they want with their lives, it's theirs to live and not for me to judge.

Except for that lesbian sailboat couple. Something wasn't right about those two.

This article was biased clickbait, but Tajikistan has long had some radical elements there, so any westerner who goes faces a risk. I feel the same as the kid who became a vegetable after going to North Korea: why did you go there?

That's because they blatantly lied about their "ordeal," something that even the 24/7 news networks that breathlessly followed the balloon boy called out.

Never bothered before now because until tonight I'd never really browsed dark on my phone (needed to kill time away from PC) but this one site made me install an ad blocker on my phone. It's like they distilled ball cancer into a website.

Also these two didn't deserve to die but nevertheless they got what their choices got them.

It's the .0000001 percent that ruin it for all the others.  Lord, typing that number out puts things into perspective, but damned if there isn't something a little bit wrong with the religion that can lead the crazed, moronic, and easily brainwashed astray.

Well, don't tell me you wouldn't do it if you could. Can we leave the race baiting out of this? I could do this, but I'm not white. The homeless person on your corner could make the same comment about you, about having a house, and a mode of transportation.  They can take a few years off and travel? Good on them. Too bad they were killed in an unlucky incident. Point is to feel bad. Once you feel like that they got what they deserved, cuz wypypo, then you turn into the bad guy. Don't be that dude. Doesn't help the cause.

A couple olf years a go a woman friend of mine went for a solo cycling holiday in Iran. She had a great time and found the people overwhelmingly friendly, although a little wary of photographs. Lesson: people are often nicer than their rulers. See also: the US.

For those who don't want to click the link (I confess it did make me laugh, it's unfortunate when your make-believe concept kills you for real):

Millennial Couple Bikes Through ISIS Territory to Prove 'Humans Are Kind' and Gets Killed

"Evil is a make-believe concept we've invented to deal with the complexities of fellow humans."

A progressive young American couple was killed in an Islamic State-claimed terrorist attack last month while on a bike trip around the world.

Jay Austin and Lauren Geoghegan, who were both in their late 20s, quit their jobs in 2017 to embark on a trip around the world. Austin, a vegan, and Geoghegan, a vegetarian, decided that they're were wasting their lives working.

"I've grown tired of spending the best hours of my day in front of a glowing rectangle, of coloring the best years of my life in swaths of grey and beige," Austin wrote on his blog before he quit. "I've missed too many sunsets while my back was turned. Too many thunderstorms went unwatched, too many gentle breezes unnoticed."

The couple documented their year-long journey on social media until it came to a tragic andgruesome end in Tajikistan, a country with a known terrorist presence.

Austin and Geoghegan were riding their bikes in the country on July 29 when they were rammed by a car, according to CBS News. Five men got out of the car and stabbed them to death along with two other cyclists, one from Switzerland and the other from the Netherlands.

Two days later, ISIS released a video showing the same men sitting in front of the black ISIS flag. They looked at the camera and vowed to kill "disbelievers," according to The New York Times.

Now then ;
I feel bad for these  young cyclists, a terrible way to die
especially since despite the 'known' ISIS presence that nation appears to be stable...ish. They weren't dumb enough to go blithely blundering through an active war zone, they wisely skirted it ,but they ( I hate shouldas wouldas couldas) simply shoulda stayed out of that area altogether, they coulda gone through China, seen amazing things, meet
interesting people and live to tell their children and grandchildren about it. A waste of yet MORE humanity

Youd be surprised how many folks can get away for two weeks.  Youd be surprised how much biking through Canada and Mexico you can do in two weeks.  Its how my folks spent vacations with my sister and i in the 80s/90s, and my dad worked in a paint factory.  Bike camping is cheap as hell.

Also, teachers.  In our travels we constantly met packs of roving teachers.  That summers off is just made for this stuff.  I frequently think i should have gone into teaching.

And just how do you think the media, and everyone one else this couple came in contact with, knew that information?
