I was at my insurance agent earlier. We were discussing something and she said,

"I'll need the VIN number."

I really, really didn't want to correct her, and I managed not to say anything. But boy did that make me cringe.

"You've got another thing coming".  I don't think I've ever said that phrase out loud, but if it's good enough for Rob Halford, it's good enough for me.

"You've got another thing coming" and "One in the same", when written down are incorrect. However, when typically spoken most people would slam the words together and not purposely pronounce the words. So "think coming" becomes "thinkoming" becomes "thing coming" and "One and the" becomes "One 'n the" becomes "One in the".

I would think that is why many phrases get written down wrong, it is a reflection of the the way most people hear these phrases.

The only one I got wrong was "you got another think coming" because it just doesn't make any sense that way without an unstated sentence or two.

When someone says they are going to 'nip it in the bud', it means they are going to do something and get it over with quickly and efficiently.

No, it means you're going to deal with a problem or issue early on, before it has a chance to get (or grow) bigger.

It's fun to tell cashiers to scan the universal product code already they just look at you with the most bewildered expressions most of the time.

Skimmed TFA, I'm not getting any of those wrong.

Probably because I do a goggle search of new words/phrases before attempting to use them.

You're right, because people don't read anymore. Even people who claim to be 'readers' will very often be referring to audio books, which is NOT reading.

"The phrase derives from the 'de-budding' of plants and the very first version of it was 'nip it in the bloom'. "

I'd say nip it in the butt works then, as my brown flower blooms at least once a day.

If you think I'll sit around as the world goes by
You're thinkin' like a fool cause it's a case of do or die
Out there is a fortune waiting to be had
If you think I'll let you go you're mad
You've got another thing think comin'
You've got another thing think comin'
