Fun fact: My father is from New Britain and actually went to the same high school as Manafort (though not at the same time as him).

Really.  Very interesting.  Something to watch, for sure.  I hope it doesn't end with Manafort getting off.  Every time I hear about this trial, it's about him being more and more farked.  Let's keep that train rolling!

FTFA:
The first bench conference was brief, and Ellis concluded it by calling a five-minute recess. During that time Manafort stood in a huddle with his entire defense team. It's unclear what they were talking about, but it appeared to be a serious discussion.
When Ellis returned from the brief recess, he again called another bench conference, this one lasting about 10 minutes, longer than previous bench conferences have lasted in this trial. During the second bench conference, Ellis called up the court security officer, which was also unusual.
Ellis called yet another recess at 10:15 a.m. and said it would last about 15 minutes, but he was away from the courtroom for close to an hour. During this time, the entire legal team for special counsel Robert Mueller and most of the members of the defense team were out of the room, while Manafort waited with two of his lawyers.

Can any legal types weigh in on the normality/abnormality of this?

It's like when Donald Trump didn't want to name Jr. his name at first because, and I quote: "What if he turns out to be a loser?"

It never occurred to him that Jr. would not only would be a loser, but that he himself would end up a traitor. The Trump name is poison.

From my Law and Order Degree my guess is that somebody on the jury is compromised and they're trying to figure out what to do. Freaking Ludacris is getting away with it again!!!

But really, it could be a result of that Stone associate refusing to hold to his subpoena. We'll have to wait and see to be sure.

If you'd gone to Law and Order Special Victims University like I did you'd know that he's done all sorts of illegal stuff but almost always gets away with it due to technicalities.

They should call it 2nd street. It's the most popular street.

Hard to say, all we know is the two sides had something to talk about that they wanted the judge to be aware of.  Could be a plea deal, for example, or some other kind of deal that would affect the trial schedule, e.g., "we'll stipulate to these facts if you don't put X witness on the stand", or something to do with a witness becoming suddenly hard to find.
But there are a couple of hints that this may have something to do with a juror getting caught tweeting.  The lawyers on each side would want to confer to decide how big a stink to raise, based on whether they interpret the tweet as favorable to them.

I believe he's still wanted in Brazil for his role in a brazen daylight robbery of a safe from the Rio De Janeiro Police HQ.

No he isn't but if Ellis is the presiding judge for the GJ that subpoenaed Miller it might be connected.

That was my initial reaction. Several days ago Seth Abramson wrote that a plea deal could come at any point during the trial right up until the judge gives the case to the jury.
