(WCAX Vermont)   Police arrest teen carrying 10 knives at school. He doesn't go to school there, he was just meeting a friend. His mother says "he always carries several knives under his leather jacket in summer months." Seems legit   ( wcax.com) divider line

Machete.

The 18-year-old Owens, who is not a student at Central High, told police he was meeting a friend.

So... an adult who likely just recently graduated high school, walking around a school with a fair number of knives.  Not an intelligent person....

What kind of leather jacket did he have? We all know he has the right to carry knives, but they must not be in fringed jackets.

Owens' mother corroborated his claims about the coat and knives.

Ask his dad.

doglover: Who DOESN'T carry a few knives in the US?

I know I do, but then again, I cook for a living, and a pocket knife is sort of necessary for all the damn boxes I have to get into, and I have a Leatherman because sometimes I need to tighten something, or loosen something else, and sometimes you need wirestrippers. I get having a blade or a multi-tool. And as a former bouncer, I understand that some folks really like having a weapon handy. Blades were never something I ever liked seeing come into a club I was working, certainly never liked finding one, or having someone pull one, but I get that some folks feel safer if they can "defend" themselves, which is usually a fancy way of saying, "I prefer to intimidate the sh*t out of people to get out of some dumbassery I just put my foot into" or "Yes, I WILL cut a b*tch!"

Guy was selling knives to high school kids. It's kinda creepy, but Mom should just say, "My boy is kind of a creepy jerk." You can't really deal with the issue until you identify the issue.

The school needs the guy who says No bows, no blades, leave your weapons here.

I always carry at least two. You never know if you will need to keep a grip on something while getting your knife out so you need one easily accessible to your free hand.

My grandfather was really old-school. He taught me that a gentleman always carries a handkerchief, a lighter, and a pocket knife. The day has rarely passed when I haven't needed ant least two of those.

But I usually carry a six inch fixed blade knife as well. Not necessarily as a weapon, but for those times when I need a tool for a project that a pocket knife can't handle. That being said, ten knives is a bit much.

So if carrying a concealed weapon in a school is a felony, and possessing a weapon during commission of a felony is a felony, he should face ten factorial felony charges, right?

I used to wear a one everyday. It's not a big deal.

I never wear shorts or sandals either, because I'm a man, not a toddler.
Let me just guess what you wear...

Well, the chocolate didn't last very long and I still carry my Authentic Swiss Army Knife.

I have a Skeletool, a Swiss Army Cybertool, and a handful of other smaller pocket knives.

Usually carrying one is enough.

I do wonder if they are using cop math and counting each blade as a separate knife....

That's getting to the point where it must have started to affect his ability to walk.
Yeeks!  Cops were right to stop him, and smart to photograph what they found on him.

18 IS high school kid age still.

I don't subscribe to the 18 = adult philosophy, especially considering our 70 year old president unelect is more than twice my age but still a toddler.

Its adorable when people tie their manliness to their clothing.

If you define your manhood by fashion, you've got bigger problems than sandals.

I know people that choose to wear sandals and cargo shorts because of a lifestyle* choice.
They are *obese. That is the only way they can get dressed and get to their stuff.

He has to scale down a bit in the summer.  It's too hot to wear his winter cutlery collection coat in the summer -- you should see how many knives are in that one.

Actually, it does seem legit. Teenagers love "cool" stuff like having a bunch of a knives. Or wearing a leather coat regardless of time of year. Or mall shop "swords". Or fedoras. There's all sorts of stupid crap that teenagers think are cool, and it's wrong to apply a zero-tolerance zero-thought panicky attitude to this kid. He's not too bright, and he hasn't gotten out of his "I'm a ninja" teenage phase yet. Big deal. Take all the knives from him, ban him from campus, and give him a swift kick in the ass. But for farks sake don't destroy the future of a dumb kid for dumb kid stuff.
