south carolina is farked.
Drivers whose licenses have been suspended for six months or less can also drive a moped in South Carolina, without a license, until the suspension is over. ... Because South Carolina state law does not classify mopeds as a motorized vehicle, youcannot be charged with DUI on a moped.

the law is getting a bit stricter this fall and the cops will be able to charge you with dui on a moped.

If I'm a municipality, I start charging market rate rent part sq foot for every shared vehicle parked on a sidewalk, common area, or public space. This is use of public domain property and resources, which the public is entitled to compensation for a private entity making a profit off of.

Governments do it for mineral, timber, oil, wind, and other resources like hay for ranchers grazing their cattle. It only seems natural and logical to reimburse the public for occupying and monetizing their finite open space.

NYC is on the right path. The same should apply to uber, for occupying finite roadways with unoccupied vehicles that contribute to congestion.

When I was in Paris, I rented a moped to get around the city. It was awesome, and there are parking spots specifically for mopeds and motorcycles. In four days, I didn't have to fill up the gas tank. And I rode everywhere.

Fark the people who are too insecure to ride a moped or scooter because they think it looks silly. It's your loss. If I had a place at my house to store a moped, then I'd buy one.

Circa late 1970's..Long Island, NY.
My neighbor from across the street was from Italy. He drove some fancy Alfa Romeo and would go to Italy once a year. When I was a pre-teen, he went to Italy, and came back with a moped so his daughters could ride it around. However, the girl's mom didn't really like this idea and now upset that he brought the moped back and wasn't going to be used, told me that I could go in the garage, start 'er up and take it for a spin whenever I wanted to.

However my mom didn't like that idea either and I seldom rode it. But when I did, I was the coolest kid on the block.

I ride my scooter around more than my car..lol. Also in MO, if your scooter can go faster than 35mph, you have to have a license. This has helped prevent 12 year olds from killing themselves.

Pisa, Italy 1988-1990
I lived in Pisa Italy for two years. While there I befriended a girl who drove a Vespa. Usually at night when we met up for coffee and whatnot down in Tierrania, (a lovely beach resort area on the coast of the Mediterranean) on warm summer nights, she would let me take it for a spin around town.

The cool summer breeze, the lovely tourists, the sunset, and all the wonderful sights and sounds whizzing past was one of the highlights of this stay in Italy.

I would often return the darned thing without gas and gladly paid for a refill.

I will consider it when all of my representatives are using public transportation and f@#%ing scooters/mopeds for that last mile.  Until then the only public mass transit system I will be using is the highway system with my private vehicle that actually gets me to my destination.

That's a scooter. Mopeds have pedals and motors/engines. Both are fine, I'm not sure why people would be resistant to them. I had Vespas for about 12 years, they make city driving so easy, I can be in the city centre and parked in 15 minutes, whereas in a car it would take about 40 minutes.

Motorcyclist here that often rides in urban and dense suburban environments. I see moped drivers do stupid shiat constantly, like cut off a garbage truck. So please, in an effort to protect yourself and give the rest of us two-wheeled drivers a better name, if you're going to ride a moped/scooter, go take the MSF BRC course. Get your motorcycle endorsement on your license. You'll be safer riding in traffic and having been given some instruction on the basics and theory of two-wheel locomotion and skills on how to navigate dangers. When that first panic stop happens when going around a corner, you'll have a better chance of staying upright knowing you have to get the scooter upright before you jam on the brakes and tuck the front end or slide the rear and highside yourself.

On the plus side, you get a discount on insurance for your scooter/moped, and if/when you want, you can trade up to something more comfortable riding with urban traffic and on the highway.

After my last stroke, I voluntarily took myself off the road for a couple months when I found myself driving down main Street halfway in the oncoming lane. Then I bought a motorcycle with 150 HP.

but I really cannot justify having one for the prices they command.....when I find one in the sub $200 range I'll have one

I can't imagine that anybody's ego or sense of manhood is so fragile that they would have a problem being seen on a moped. For many people a moped would be a viable and much lower cost form of transportation. If one were reasonable for my commute I would be all over it. Unfortunately I am somewhat of an outlier, with a 50 mile each way commute, including some rural, mountain roads with 65 mph traffic that would be a nightmare on a moped.

Dr Dreidel: More like NOPE-eds, amirite?

Yes. Exactly. A scooter is a known as a "noped". As they have no pedals, they can not be a moped. Scooters are fine but calling them mopeds is almost like calling a razor scooter a skateboard. Similar but not the same.

Depending on how much you need to tow, get a midsize European car. VW Passat, Volvo S60/V60. Those are used in Europe for towing all the time, and generally are rated for at least 3,500 pounds. The US versions tend to be derated, but only because it's assumed that they won't be used for towing by people that know what they're doing here in the states.

That's the result of the bicycle thing in Dallas.  I suspect the scooters and mopeds to end up the same way, it'll just be a more expensive pile of junk.

You're not that much of an outlier, my commute is the same distance, except for 2 days a week when my commute consists of walking from the bed to the desk.

Having said that, why not just get a small motorcycle?

Something like a Yamaha V-Star 250 or a Honda Rebel 300 will have enough scrote that you can move at highway speeds, and you'll be getting nearly 80 MPG.

When I met the distaffbopper I was riding a Yamaha XJ650 Maxim.  I'd get a motorcycle myself, except I isn't allowed.
