While we are experiencing some backsliding with the current political climate, things in the US are a LOT better than they were when I was a lad in the 70s even. Food standards are better, we have less lead in the environment, we are experiencing a remarkably lower incidence of violent crime nationally, things are remarkably brighter for young women like my daughter, LGBT rights seem imperiled, but considering where we've been, we are seeing a historic amount of acceptance. We have had a black President, fer Chrissakes. Where we had Eastern bloc countries that were treaty bound to attack the US and Europe in the 70s, we now have NATO allies.

Things are improving across the world. Part of that is technology. Part of that is better distribution for food and utilities. Part of that is better education, and easier access to medicine. Can we do better? For damn sure, but it IS getting better, overall, for the world's population, and here in the US as well. But people NEED folks scared, if they want to keep a particular kind of control, which is why there is Sofa King much fear mongering. So long as folks are scared of one another, then they won't reach out to help one another, and that means that folks who thrive in the flux of fear and retaliation and conflict can quietly sup on the cash that they can glean from folks.

We can do better, and we have 40 years of proving exactly that already...

I grew up in the 60's and was fortunate to have highly educated parents (for the time and place).  We used cyanide of lead to kill yellowjackets and played lawn darts on the weekend and were going to replace the lead pipes in the old house some day.

And Montenegro.  Don't forget about Montenegro.  That little spot on the globe might turn out to be our Archduke Ferdinand, but I'll take NATO over Putin all 7 days of the week and all 10 when Napolen's in charge.

This is the same site that claimed Phoenix had scientifically-proven better weather than Honolulu.

Pretty much anyone who says that this is the worst period in history doesn't have a memory that goes back further than 10 years.

Read Hans Rosling's book, Factfullness recently, which he wrote with his daughter and son-in-law before dying recently of cancer or something like that. It is sort of this article writ large--he spent his life doing good (as a physician) and spreading the good news. No Pollyanna, just plain facts, Ma'am, nothing but the facts.

Amazing how much better the world looks in the light of facts, minus the darkness make visible that is the DTs of this world.

So 1 million people per week are being lifted out of extreme poverty each week over the last 25 years. It's funny what we consider newsworthy or not.

I have been watching the Ken Burns Vietnam War documentary on Netflix this month. I was under the impression that incivility was at an all time high due to the impersonal nature of online communication, but there is definitely footage of pro-war protesters holding signs that say "Protesters are commie traitors and should be killed" as well as footage of anti-war protesters physically assaulting middle-aged/borderline elderly people holding American flags. It's always been a shiatshow.

The world has recently had much less war, poverty, famine etc, but much like you're not going to see a headline saying "10,000 airplanes landed successfully today" it won't register.

You tell the coal miner in India who used to shiat in the street and eat whatever raw plants he could get his hands on and now lives in an apartment with running water and buys food at a grocery store that this world is worse today than it used to be because some limousine liberals in the United States have to wrap their heads around the fact that a conservative is going to be their President for four years.

Thank you dittybopper for my happy thought for the day...

Little gems like this truly inspire me. It is something that I know in my heart is true but - provides the "citation needed"!!!

The Philadelphia Eagles are the Super Bowl Champions. I waited almost fifty years to say that. Damn right it's a better world.
