so grunge should be back in style any day now, now that we finally worked our way out of the 80s hell and into the early 90s hell

There's always a 20-year gap for nostalgia.

The 1970s had 50s nostalgia.
The 1980s had 60s nostalgia.
The 1990s had 70s nostalgia.
The 2000s had 80s nostalgia.

And now, the 2010s have 90s nostalgia.

It already is.  My 16 year old and her friends all listen to Nirvana and Alice in Chains along with new hipster rock acts like Bon Iver and other such sh*t.

"American Graffiti" and "Happy Days", the two codifiers for 50s nostalgia, came out in 1973 and '74.

Technically, "Graffiti" was set in 1962, but there's also a transition period between decades, e.g. the 1950s lasted till 1963, the 1960s lasted till 1973 or '74, the 1970s lasted till 1983, the 1980s lasted till 1992, the 1990s lasted till 2001, and the 2000s lasted till 2011.

Actually, that last one's iffy. It seems like the 2000s have been the decade that refuses to end.

I went to high school in 80's and style was like mid 60's. Mini-skirts, big hair, etc.

I was OK with 90s fashion up through the grunge period. When I saw those gigantic pants with pockets and pictures all over them that teenagers were wearing in the mid-90s, and every single white girl in America sporting the same hairdo (the "Mitch Kramer") -- that was the moment I started to feel old.

Well, I'll be ready.  I think I have a pair of my old Girbaud jeans and I still remember how to cuff the pants legs.

i was in high school 92-96 and it was most definitely the 60s, at least what is most associated with the 60s - hippies and woodstock sorta stuff, not the extension of the 50s part of the 60s

There was a short-lived "That 80s Show" (starring Glenn Howerton) that was god-awful. The writers failed to recognize that "That 70s Show" was popular because of its characters and appealing ensemble cast, not just hollow period references.

14 years removed is a little short for a cultural resurgence.  that's like reminiscing about the bush years now (even though 'miss me yet' does sound tempting in comparison these days).  it's still too fresh in the minds of those who lived it and those people's kids aren't old enough to have any influence or think that hey, maybe some things from their parent's day wasn't bad, even if they think the actual parents are uncool

I once read an interesting history that traced the 20-year nostalgia cycle to Sha Na Na performing at Woodstock. That was technically in the 60s, but it paved the way for 70s things like American Graffiti (and of course Sha Na Na's own TV show). In fact, it was a major force in developing the decades-as-entities phenomenon that is now engrained in our cultural consciousness. Supposedly, when they took the stage, all the hippies who had come to do their hippie things and hear their hippie music were like "WTF, the 50s were a boring and oppressive and conservative and conformist time, why would we be nostalgic for that?" But the act went over surprisingly well, and people in the audience learned that with sufficient distance, all those things that had become distasteful could now be viewed with a sense of fun and irony.

My kid's back to school supplies were simplified by very exact instructions from his teacher.  Including the color of his notebooks, the length, type, and color of his pencils, and the brand name, with measurements, for his pencil box.  No individuality allowed, every kid will have the same everything.  I'm not sure that I'm not okay with this.

As someone who frequently wears suits, I wouldn't mind seeing a comeback of what they charitably called the "athletic fit" (meaning a little roomier in the shoulders and thighs for dudes like me). And pant legs that come all the way down (seriously, those legs that stop at mid-ankle to show off rainbow colored socks are going to be a joke in a few years). The 90s can keep their earth tones and vertical-striped ties, though.

So basically according to you, apart from the 2000s, everything since 1970 sucked.  Uh okay.
