Other than one year where he hit a ton of dingers, he's been average, below average, or hurt for his entire career.

that contract was a bad one before the ink was dry.  i would've been mad if the sox signed him for 75% of that.  was pretty much 'good luck, you'll need it'

one great year, a couple of good ones, but the injury risk was way too high and was only going to slow down with age, with speed being his only real asset

never really felt like he fit in in boston anyway.  when they all grew the big beards, he was always trying to do the bare minimum and looked like he couldn't wait to get rid of it.  maybe that's why he went to the yankees - so he would never have to grow one again

I'd forgotten he was even on the Yankees' roster.

Outside of that one year, his career was Brett Gardner. It was silly to sign a second Brett Gardner.

But as long as he isn't on the actual roster, I suppose I don't care.

Though I do feel bad for him in the same way I feel bad for David Wright. I'm sure they'd both rTher be playing.

/yes, I can only feel so bad for DLed players collecting millions and millions of dollars.

ElwoodCuse: Tacoby Bellsbury

Yep, he was good to Boston.   Hustled, and hurt himself for us, won us tacos, seemed like great clubhouse guy... but his shoulder/arm finally doomed him.  Sad to see him go, sad to see him have to lose his flowing locks and spirit as a Yankee.  But was also fine with him going to the Yankees because I knew he'd never get another outfield assist throwing out a runner.

Really?  You wanna go there?

Adrian Gonzalez, Hanley Ramirez and Pablo Sandoval say, "Hey, the Red Sox gave us free money!"

Uh, that would have been a different turncoat OF that went to the Yankees.

Ack, I combined the two!  My memory is crap.  Thanks

This makes me sad.  Gozalez was at least a good player.

You forgot Castillo and Crawford.

The Yankees have about $29M/yr in dead salary.

-$2.2M for Adam Warren to play for the Mariners (he was traded at the deadline for international pool space)
-$5.5M for Brian McCann to play for the Astros (how chafing was it that the Yankees were paying McCann to help beat them in the ALCS last year.. and they're still paying him to play for the Astros for a couple more years)
-$21M for Ellsbury to sit on his ass at home

sox track record isn't good.  also a lot of guys they ditched as too old or will fall off a cliff that went on to do great for years

I mean at least Ellsbury had an excuse: he's been hurt and, possibly, the injuries have limited his ability.

Gonzalez? Ehhhh...pass. He was...decent with the Dodgers after the trade.  To be honest I don't know how Crawford became a black hole with the Sox; even I thought he'd be a productive lead-off guy.

Ramirez and Sandoval? Just bad.

I guess you could be the Mets and be paying Cespedes 29 million dollars a year. Baseball and their crazy ass contracts. So weird. That G.Stanton contract, too. Have fun with that NYY.

It's too soon to say if Stanton's worth it or not.

Yeah, I was hopeful when we initially got Crawford, but that turned ugly quickly.

I guess we'll find out in the next 10 years!!! Though he could opt out in 2 years, but why?

On a side note, forgot all about David Wright. Guy was great! HOF bound but that stopped about 5 years ago.

The MLB landscape is littered with long-term contracts that were major busts, and there are very few exceptions to that rule. I wonder what the over/under is on how much Stanton will collect while on the DL over the life of that deal. If it's less than $50 million, I'd take the over.
