Hours before the grand opening, Bandali smelled natural gas near the entrance, so he called in the Calgary Fire Department and ATCO, but tests all came up negative.

My favorite family owned pizza shop here in Toronto, is located in a small street facing strip mall. Some doofus working on the wall at back cracked a gas pipe, then left. Many hours later, at like 3AM, the entire strip mall exploded, killing like 5 people who lived above the stores. They found pieces of the building in peoples yards like 150 meters away. The good news is, they moved the pizza shop across the street, and they are as good as ever.

Wait.....

New York style or Chicago style?

These things must be known before FARK can make an accurate assessment of the explosion being a good thing or a bad thing.

It took them three years to find the source in the ceiling....
"Finally, I proved it to everybody, I was not losing my mind," he said.

It sounds suspiciously like someone was... *glasses* ...gaslighting him.

Speaking of smelt, bunch of us guys were at Denny's at 2am (as you would) and one of our friends had ordered a milkshake.
Suddenly the guy turns all serious-like and calls the waiter over and says "please call your manager".
We all turn to him and ask him what's wrong, and he just sat there, elbows on the table, fingers laced in front of his face, not replying to us. This isn't a guy we were used to have complaining.
There was a lot of tension building in the air.
Manager walks over, usually nice guy (but as tough as needed for the late night shift) and asks what's wrong.
Our friend dramatically points to the milkshake and says "smelt".
"Sorry?"
"Smelt!"
"Sorry, sir, you want me to smell it?"
"No!The ice cream it's melt"

The bunch of us start laughing our heads off. Manager looks to us a bit annoyed wondering if we were pulling some prank on him, our friend starts getting embarrassed, still angry. Only the look on our friend's face convinced him we weren't pulling a prank.

"Do you want me to make you another?"
"Yes. Please."

Smelt, indeed.

PTOS, did you suddenly turn into, like, a sorority girl?

Natural gas is odorless.  Mercaptan is added as an odorant for safety reasons.  I find it hard to believe that it was detected by a human nose but the fire department's flammable gas detector could not find the source.  More effort needed checking these things out !!

It took them three years before someone at the gas company thought to do the dead check to test for a leak?  If they detected no gas the first time, I'd think they would have done the dead check the next time, seeing the downside to a gas leak.

Hey I remember that.  I was working at Candy's Video across the street at the time, though not at the exact time of the accident of course.

In this particular case here, the incompetence is astounding.  How much did this poor guy have to pay for gas that he never used?

I suspect the owner noticed the smell intermittently.

They should have called The Rock.

Why did that take 3 years? They should have done that day one.
I've seen those gas detectors fail when humans could clearly smell the mercaptan. Unless you're a smoker or in some trade where your nose is burnt out, you're usually as good as the portable machines.

I misread "dead check" as "dead chick" which certainly would have smelled up the place.

...It took them THREE YEARS to do a dead check? No one from the gas company suggested, or forced them to do this on the prior calls?

If I can't find the source of a leak that's the first thing I do.
