Of course the bureaucrats want to cut off their noses to spite their faces.  You would think that every person would want bats around to eat the freaking mosquitoes.

That sucks. A NIMBY Dallas city councilman tried suing a neighbor to make him remove his. Cue civic outrage, and he didn't win. HOAs suck.

That's such bullshiat. Those bat boxes do more good than harm. Certainly better than the stupid spraying they do around here under the auspice of preventing the spread of West Nile virus.

Once again, some people want to take the unnatural approach at a solution instead of the natural approach.

I have never thought of a bat as a "nuisance".

The only interaction I have had (except for watching them fly around at dusk) was when one flew at my face when I cut down an old tree.  Of course, me wildly flailing my chainsaw at it while screaming like a 4 year old girl made it fly away.

It's a shame the HOA is blind to the potential benefits.

Bats lay eggs in people's hair.  It's a known fact.  Then you have to raise the baby bats and teach them to fly and use radar.  Aint nobody got time for that.

Any endangered bats living in the area?  He could claim there's a colony of Adam Westwinged Bats living in there and they're endangered.  Oh wait.  Trump just changed the Adam Westwinged Bat from "endangered" to "Hunting is allowed 52 weeks a year with weapons including shotgun, medium and high powered rifles and flame thrower."

My outrage meter is at "meh".  You moved into an HOA because you wanted a bunch of tyrannical busybodies to tell your neighbors what they can and cannot do on their property, and you act shocked when they get all up in your business?

Yeah right. Except when they don't. EVERYONE who is part of an HOA entered into that relationship voluntarily.

Using the same argument the HOA did?  Oh that's so cute.

Today you learned that a whopping total of 23 cases of human rabies were reported in the US from 2008-2017. (not one in 2016 or 2017) Cite

You also learned that 2002 cases of West Nile virus were reported in the US in 2017.

"It seems like prior years we were harassed by salmon," Pate said. He has lived in his Chandler home since 2011 and came up with a solution: a bear cave.
"The primary function of those bears would be eating salmon, and salmon-like things," Pate said. "It's all natural."

"The word I would use would be shocking, because of the length of time it had been there and the positive feedback from neighbors," Pate said. "They simply love marauding hordes of bears. Bears, I might add, that are protecting you from vicious salmon."  He admitted he didn't ask for permission to put it up, but didn't see anything in the rules saying he couldn't.

"I didn't think I really needed to because it's like a birdhouse, a habitat," Pate said, as a bear casually slaughtered a neighborhood deer and dragged it into the cave.

"I'VE GOT CUDDLES AND PORRIDGE FOR YOU, HERE, MR. BEAR!", He yelled to the bears, as they gave him the side eye and a grunt.

I really hate living in an area that has HOAs.  Ours is surprisingly reasonable (haven't heard of a single horror story in the almost 20-year history of the HOA), but I'd still much rather not be a part of one.  My wife and I were looking at remote properties for the purpose of rentals (VRBO-type stuff), and even one of the properties I never would have suspected as part of an HOA was in one.  It was solely for road maintenance (it was on a gravel/dirt road), but still.

No doubt, that is absolutely true. You would think there would be a limit to their abject stupidity on certain things but evidently not

Yet the box owner can clearly see the benefits of having bats around.

The bats aren't going to leave, they'll take up residence in the houses, one way or the other.  Smarter to give them a home, compared to the cost of chasing them out of attics.

It's racism, plain and simple.

2018-07-20 08:41:24 AM
I used to have a healthy colony of bats in an old barn on my property and as then sun went down it seemed like the number of bats coming out of it at night was just endless. About five years ago the number of bats flying out dropped to 0 and I haven't seen any since. I think they all died from that white nose fungus that has been going around. It was because of the bats that I left the old barn up and now I leave it up just in case they come back. We need bats and they need any little bit of help we can offer right now.

the only nuisance is that the bats won't go away. they will just find some other place to live - like your attic. it becomes a nuisance due their guano more than anything.

however, if you give them a place to live - it's a moot point.

/mosquitoes suck.
//HOA's suck more.

Money quote:  "The structure that is in violation was installed without prior approval and is against the guidelines of the Community."

Common areas are...get this, it's complicated...common.

As in, "not yours alone, you have to share."

Doesn't matter if it dispenses ice cream to orphans, you can't put up structures without prior permission; the HOA is LEGALLY OBLIGATED to make you remove it, before Sally in 3B ups the ante and puts in her personal swimming pool in the common area, and Jed decides he can park his extra vehicle on the lawn.

If the HOA doesn't remove the bat house, Hypothetical Sally and Jed can point to it and say "see?  they're not enforcing the rules"....and will probably win in court if push comes to shove.

You know who lives in HOAs?:

1. Pedantic authoritarians who like the comfort of cookie cutter neighborhoods and conformity, and dislike behavior that's even remotely avant garde or strays from social norms. Often characterized by people with too much time on their hands who devote themselves to keeping an eye on their neighbors.

2. Idiots who make major purchases with little or no research and who often wrongly assume that they can ignore rules that they don't agree with. They'll tender a million excuses as to why their disputes with the HOA aren't their fault but at no time does it ever occur to them that they're entirely responsible for the situation they're in.

I have no sympathy for either group including our protagonist "batman".

He got another letter on July 11, saying it has to be gone within two weeks. Over the phone, Pate said his HOA told him neighbors are concerned about rabies.

Oh, the fawking ignorance.

I think the problem is when middle managers residing in an HOA development retire they miss having to boss people around and infiltrate the HOA management to get their fix of authoritarianism.

I wouldn't consider all HOAs pedantically authoritarian. There are HOAs with different levels of authority. I don't give a damn if a person rakes their leaves or not, but around here you'll come across a residential junkyard or two that I would not want to be living near.

There's a great unintended consequence of the USA's move towards a white-supremacist dictatorship: HOAs become redundant.

I have a coworker who lives with an HOA. Apparently it was formed to (a) pay for irrigation water for the neighborhood, and (b) keep one particular asshole out of the neighborhood. The only real "rule" is no more than one large animal per acre of property, so she's limited to ten horses.

Get involved in your HOA and do what it takes to make them normal.  It isn't actually that hard if you are a rational, sane and normal human being to convince others that the morons are morons and should be ignored.

And all the rat poison people use kills off the owls and other raptors.

But hey who needs to listen to owls calling in the middle of the night or find their capsules of mouse bones in their plasticized yards.
