Just watch... the TV deals- when they come up for renewal- are going to go down from the many, many billions to the many billions.

Well I believe in freedom of speech here, but at the sane time the protests have hurt the NFL to a certain extent. Some people I know stopped watching or at least claim to stop watching, yet like any NFL-related posts on my Facebook long after they say they stopped watching.

this isn't hurting the NFL's bottom line.
The Packers are the only team that has to publicly report their finances since they are a publicly owned team.

according to their financial records, they got 255 million from tv money. add in ticket prices, and everything else....teams are doing just fine.

People against these protests are saying "look at the ratings"
but overall, tv ratings are down.

these protests are not really having any effect on the NFL.

I'm just now starting to think that Joe here just says shiat to threadshiat...

Ignore him long enough and he will go back to yelling at clouds and we can have the grownup discussion.

At some point, ignoring doesn't work anymore. As many politicians (among others like anti-vaxxers) have proven over the years, if you repeat a lie long enough, enough people will believe it that it basically becomes the truth.

The NFL needs to stop trying to make money off of the anthem.

Black men have the right to protest. They secured that right by fighting for a country that treated them like animals.

Way to have a clear concise policy on players kneeling.  Almost as laser-focused as suspensions on assault.

That's more because of the format than anything else. March Madness is exciting because anything can happen in a single game knockout tournament. The NBA playoffs are all seven game series, which almost always ensures that the better teams move on each round.

I wonder if he'll settle. The league probably wants all of this to just go away before the season starts. Trump isn't going to let that happen.

This is what I posted in a similar thread about people whining about players protesting:

That was all empty talk to make them feel important and self righteous.

Do you think that they'd give up football altogether? Are the sports books in Vegas going bankrupt? Are fantasy football leagues now defunct? Is merchandise at an all time low in sales? Are they ceasing to build new stadiums and renovate current ones for NFL teams? A big fat no to all of those questions. I'd bet that the NFL probably lost less than 1% of their fanbase from players kneeling before the anthem when it was all said and done.

Where else would they go to?

The NBA? Please, they're even more socially conscious and "thuggier" than the NFL.
Soccer? Too international and cosmopolitan of a sport for them - liberal hipsters love the sport.
NHL? Right "complexion", but for many, too complicated to learn - they couldn't even tell you what icing and cross checking are.
NASCAR? Losing ratings by the bucketload, even after they tried to piggyback off their love for Murica.

I'll bet by the end of the season, teams won't even come out of the locker room at all. They may elect to send one or two team reps, but that's it.

The funny thing is if they had just ceased the anthem all together with a few exceptions (say week 1, Veterans' Day week, and the Super Bowl), they'd have gotten what they wanted in the first place - players can't protest if there's no "microphone" to speak. Most of these fauxtriots don't have anywhere else to spend their entertainment dollar - loud posts on internet chatrooms are empty talk.

Besides, in terms of politics, who's to say that right wing football players wouldn't co-opt kneeling if a Democrat wins in 2020? I could see a Tebow wannabe kneeling for the souls of aborted children and then what?

Standing good, abortion bad, must kneel, but kneeling not patriotic, Murica, stand up, but support abortion, must kneel.....Scanners explosion.

Right now, the NBA sucks - though not in the way that NHL fanboy Farkers would like to think.

Admittedly, I'm a Grizzlies fan and that's part of it, but the way the league is structured, about 24 of the 30 teams have no shot of winning the championship and are just serving as filler. Every bottom rung team is pulling a 76ers and tanking in the hope of winning the draft lottery.

The NFL, for its faults, has a structure that ensures competitive balance throughout the league - the Browns are bad because of their own poor decisions and not from a league that does not benefit from having a less prestigious team winning (although I can't explain why the Knicks suck).

What's weird though is that the NBA always sees its highest ratings when there's a really dominant team- they've been rising the past few years even as The Warriors have solidified their dominance of the league, and we all remember how big MJ and the Bulls were in the 90s.

And in college, teams actually run very different offenses and defenses. You'll have everything from the triple option to an air raid offense, and see how teams adapt to those differences.

And the vast differences in talent make upsets more interesting; the NFL doesn't have real upsets for the most part. Even the Giants beating the Pats in the SB...if you saw the Week 17 game, you knew the Giants could hang with 'em.

Plus there's 50+ games on Saturdays, so even if the game you were going to watch is a turd, there's always a good one on.

Plus the rules are superior. Only having to get one foot down makes for more spectacular catches and a bigger field. The clock stopping to reset the chains makes the end of a game much more contested.

The NFL is the most boring version of the game of football. They chose the least interesting option at every rule divergence with the NCAA, CFL, and AFL.

College is more exciting because the defenses aren't nearly as good in the NFL.  It is more difficult to appreciate a good defense; a great defense is downright boring because it usually just means a lot of screen passes and short runs as the secondary makes the entire downfield a no-go zone.

Compare that to watching the absurd fireworks of Big 12 games... I feel like that conference more than any other is just apesh*t for huge scoring.

My beef with the NFL is the god damned commercials.

jake_lex: And there's no sport that plays up the patriotism more blatantly than NASCAR, and their ratings are in the toilet.

Many if  not all the tracks have been removing grandstands to make the places look less empty on camera.  The NFL certainly isn't that far down the mudslide.

For a while the US military had a recruiting/marketing deal with the NFL that spurred them to greatly boost the pro-military hoopla.  That's ended but it plays well with their other advertisers and many fans.  As a military veteran myself, I've always been a bit uncomfortable with the adulation.

Baseball has been doing it forever.  It gives local singers an employment opportunity I suppose.

Except we know the teams wouldn't suspend stars.  They'd use it as yet another excuse to screw over the fringe players, the one's they're contractually obligated to, but don't really want to release for salary cap/other financial reasons.  It would be a mid season excuse to save some money, on an already lost season, while pandering to their most racist advertisers.

IMO, the NBA has the largest set of what I call "fringe" fans - fans who don't root for a particular team, so much as a player or set of players (LeBron, Curry, Shaq about 20 years ago, etc.) For example, if Tom Brady were to leave NE, I don't see Patriots fans by and large jumping ship to wherever he ended up.

NFL attendance is fine: http://www.espn.com/nfl/attendance

Several teams reported a home or away average attendance larger than the theoretical capacity of the stadium.  IE, every game was a sell out, plus a thousand extra fans crammed in somehow (obviously the stated stadium capacity numbers are fictional on some level).
