Which is odd, considering all the vegans and fad diets out there in LaLa Land.

Which is not in central California...

Actually, it's not. This story from Mike Moffitt from San Francisco Gate, a reporter who's never set foot east of the Pacheco Pass, is regurgitating a story from 2 years ago that turned out to be false.

Ehh, our past 150 years of agriculture has been propped up on fossil inputs, including water. Nitrogen fertilizer is made from natural gas for the hydrogen source, phosphate is mined, and the water comes from aquifers charged over millions of years. Our current output will come to an end.

Why the hell would you want to live in central CA? What a shiathole.

Central California is crops, cows, and angry farmers biatching about dams and trains. Not even close to LaLa Land.

Generally, because you're born there and have no choice for the first 18 years of your life. Later, you either get out or you're stupid enough to stay.

Or, you're a politician and you appreciate having a ready-made base of idiots programmed to vote for you if you have an (R) next to your name.

So is there anything left in the aquifers at all? Not to be an arse about it but you really might want to change your course of actions. Desalinization, recycling sewage water whatever it takes

All we need is a law preventing NASA from reporting on it and the problem disappears. They should work on stuff we need, like plans to carve Shiathole's face into the surface of Mars. Also a big military parade on Mars to celebrate the opening of Mars Shiathole Tower.

Well it looks like this is a long-term, ongoing issue and I have no expertese in any area that this issues covers so no grand advice from me. Guess all I can do is say that it must suck to live in the Valley never knowing if/when the ground is going to fall from beneath their feet.

Well, in my own defense... I have no defense. I probably should have read the WHOLE headline.

On the bright side, if that's the worst thing that happens to me today I'm doing okay.

Fitting punishment for Trump supporters

2018-07-20 03:32:10 AM
The best part is that the affected farmers, small-government conservatives and coastal elite hating Trumpers, expect a government fix at taxpayer expense.

Repairing Friant-Kern, which was built during the Truman administration, would cost an estimated $350 million, paid for by state taxpayers.

How about no.  Does no work for you?  You broke it, you bought it Bubba.

2018-07-20 04:14:24 AM
Perhaps it's time to pass a law banning the use of ground water in agriculture unless you install drip irrigation.

Is this funny or tragic?

See, when disaster falls upon a state that is disliked by one side or the other I have to check.

And for once I am saying that indeed, the right sneering and jeering at problems in places like California is as much of a dick move as the left sneering and jeering at problems in places like Texas.

We can pretend that both sides are bad when Kamala Harris vetoes disaster relief for Texass, just like Cruz and Cornyn did for blue states.

California is farking big, and home to countless liberals and wingnuts alike. You can't stereotype the whole state.

Likewise, Texas is only rednecks and shiat-kickers outside Austin. Austin is cool.

Imagine a large portion of a state that hates the rest of the state. That's central valley. I enjoyed my stay.

I'm wondering how much of their sinking is due to pumping the water and not water draining out from a fractured fault line, though. Any geologists around?

Yes.  And NASA says that the peak subsidence since 1925 (through 2016, not 1977) is 28 feet, so that dude must be pretty short.  Not that 28 feet is anything to sneeze at, but that photo is hyperbole.

It would be possible to take into account subsidence of the pole as well, and adjust ALL of the markers accordingly.  I'm sure folks have been taking surveyor readings every 5 years or so from the edge of the valley, where there's no subsidence.  Surveyors know about such things.

None of it is false. limbosiam is just an idiot. The USGS has some great information on it here: https://water.usgs.gov/ogw/highlights/2015-08-01.html

What's really ironic is most of the water is being used to grow almonds where you shouldn't be growing almonds because of the demand for almond milk.

(Californians are really high on almond milk)

Actually yes I did, and it's caused by groundwater pumping.  The same "fark the future, I'm getting mine" mentality has existed since, well, forever.  What's your point again?

BullBearMS: Perhaps it's time to pass a law banning the use of ground water in agriculture unless you install drip irrigation.

that kind of blanket rule would be dumb.  there are places where dropping groundwater and land subsidence is not an issue.   What is really needed is the progression of California's Sustainable Groundwater Management Act.

It's actually only 2-3% of the economy, yet these CA-hating Trumpers use the majority of the state's water.
