At one time, in the seventies, this would have been a real deal.  Nowadays, though, those fries are soggy and crappy and not near as good as they once were.

I've really cooled on Mickie D's. It tastes like shiat.

A McDonald's hipster.

They used beef tallow instead of vegetable oil back in those glorious days.
Mmmmmmmmmm, beef tallow!

It's hard to know if this was really true, or if you all are just old and grumpy and nostalgic.

Old and occasionally nostalgic I'll cop to.  Not really grumpy.  The beef tallow was an ingredient that made a difference in those fries.  Some people objected and they got rid of them.  So it goes.  I think my remembrance of them is based on many things, but one of them is the fries were just tastier, crisper and all around better.

Twas true. Twas also removed due to making the fries no longer vegetarian.

I honestly don't remember them being any different. I think people just like to stick it to the vegetarians.

It was really true (NYTimes article on a lawsuit in the 2000s that mentions the change).  They changed recipes in the 90s.  Nowadays, it's vegetable oil with beef flavoring added; the flavoring is from wheat and milk proteins, but it's an approximation of the old flavor.

So, yes, the fries taste (at least a little) different nowadays now than they did before the 90s.  They also have slightly different balances of ingredients in different countries, so things taste a bit different depending on where you are.

Also, the new mixture for frying is part of what makes the restaurants so sticky; it turns into a mist and creates a thin, sticky film over almost everything in or near the kitchen.

I don't even want to think about what the other part is.

It's true. One of my kid's friends is a vegetarian and when we go to McD's, she only eats fries. I tried to convince her they were cooked in pork fat, but she didn't buy it.

free fry day earlier this week, the fast food giant is offering fans the free Friday fries

That's a lot of alliteration from anxious anchors placed in powerful posts.

Double hamburgers are 1.19, that's a pretty good deal when you throw the fries in.

Tip: Dunk the fries in sweet & sour sauce

Unless you're ordering a lot from them, it's no reason to even use their app. A normal order takes all of 5 minutes at the most.

If I could get McDonald's fries without having to actually go to McDonald's, I'd be all over it. As it stands, the service, speed, and cleanliness at almost every McD's nowadays is atrocious, so even "free" fries isn't going to entice me to patronize them very often.

No thanks...McDs does nothing for me.

/Wendy's or Hardee's is okay though

They also decided to up their salt spray by 800%. I was driving in the middle of nowhere, and that was the only restaurant, and the fries were so salty that I didn't eat any of them. The salt was clumping on my fingers just picking one up. Nasty.

I still think the switch from beef tallow to vegetable oil was a ruse to "force" McD's to change from more expensive beef fat to cheaper soy oil.

Create a fake, ethnic outrage and say "Welp, gosh darnnit, let's give the people what they want!"

/Still love fresh McDs fries.

So the app can steal all of your contacts, read all data storage, use the camera, connect to wifi by itself, connect to the internet by itself, and a slew of other things it doesn't need. I am sure if you deny any of these permissions (securety! ), the app will give you an error message and not work.

Ain't nothing free.

I walked out.

It wasn't an ethnic outrage that started it.  The major switch happened in 1990 and was part of the saturated-fats "boom" in the US.  McD's had to switch at the time because of massive public opinion (incorrect, it turns out, but hey, that's how things work).

The lawsuit by various ethnic groups and vegetarians came 12 years later, specifically because they assumed/interpreted "switching to vegetable oil" as "will not be vegetarian" while McD's was still using beef products in flavoring.

I use the McDonald's app. You can get almost any sandwich for $1 once a day through the end of September. I got a buttermilk chicken and a Coke for $2 plus tax, saving $4. I'm eating it right now, so I'm really getting a kick...

If you listen attentively you should be able to hear your arteries clogging up just a bit more as the plaque deposits are created.

Total fat: 29g
Total saturated fat: 5g (note: this is actually good, as saturated fats change small LDL to large LDL, and large LDL doesn't form plaque)
Trans fat: 0g (this is the really bad stuff, at least according to current knowledge)

So, what exactly is clogging their arteries?

I dated a vegan back in the '80s. She refused to believe that the fries were not vegan back then. Wasn't worth the argument and she did consume certain animal products.

/also loved silk, so dying worms didn't count.
