Well, turns out atheists always wanted to go to church, they just couldn't stand the people who attended.

In fairness, the Unitarians DO have really fun "Atheists vs Theists" softball games, and they DO accept openly gay and lesbian clergy. And you know how lesbians feel about the softball...just sayin'...

Breaking news: social gatherings of atheists with regular dates and times now "Churches". Also, atheists attending churches on rise.

Based on the concepts of TFA, my college philosophy class and my ethics study group were "church attendance."

Sheeeit. A buddy a mine and would get crazy stoned and go to the tv evangelist churches in Dallas, specifically Robert Tilton's word of faith family church. It was a blast at first but church is boring no matter which one you attend.

He suggests American millennials are not so much abandoning organized religion to become secular, science-loving humanists. Instead, his research shows they still cling to belief in the soul, divine energy, and "mystical realities."

(shamelessly copy-pasta'd from https://notinmygoodpagansuburbs.tumblr.com/post/175792072979/i-just-want-what-the-protestants-have )

I want crappy pagan romance novels
Like where a pioneer woman moves out west alone to start a new and difficult life and the strapping young cowboy makes life in the desert more bearable and through Freyja's guidance they will make both the crops and their love grow

I want my holidays to come with themed chocolates
Little suns in the grocery store for summer solstice, and chocolate snow drops for Imbolc

I want temples to Apollo on the street in town with all the churches, between the Lutherans and the Methodists

I want pagan preschools filled with three-year-olds planting vervain in terra cotta pots and fingerpainting images of themselves holding hands with grinning goddesses

I want jovial teasing at potlucks based on friendly stereotypes, the Catholics drank all the wine and the Unitarian Universalists can't decide what they want to eat and we've been at this park five minutes and the pagans already took off their shoes

I want a pagan music channel on the radio with shiatty pop songs about keeping your oaths to Thor that have too much guitar

I want to say "oh my gods" and "holy spear of Lugh" just like my friends say "Jesus Christ" and "oh my lord"

I want classic holiday recipes like barley bread for Lughnasadh that I can share at work to balance out all the Christmas cookies

I want my religious decision to walk or bike instead of driving alone for the health of the sacred land to be just as valid as my Mormon friend's decision not to drink

I want a state legislator to offer a prayer to Ma'at that their actions be in the name of Truth and Justice because if we're going to put religion in our government we should make sure it's not just that one religion or we risk interpreting both religious freedom and the concept of prayer in a way that only applies to Protestants

This ties into the idea that religion offers people comfort. So if you are atheist, and you are also a person who seeks comfort of the sort that science can't provide, what do you do? Maybe create something very much like a religion in that it offers that comfort, but leave out the bits that you don't believe in.

I know there are those who call such people 'weak' but I don't criticize those people for wanting that comfort. If someone wants to believe they will see their dead loved one again, in non zombie form, why the hell would I have a problem with that? I don't.

Thats called "social interaction." Its not weakness. When my grandfather died, my mom and i met up with relatives and friends. We mourned, told stories, and supported each other. Thats not religion

The support is understandable. You will meet your loved ones. The problem is when that statement is followed by "unless you break our rules", like eating meat on a friday, or not believing in our religion, or being gay.

The hope is understandable. But the manipulation of that hope is evil.

With Osteen, he has an amazing sermon, up there with a couple of churches that I went to, and the Church in the Park that I went to today.  But a few things rub me wrong:

-He seeks applause
-The sermons I've been to spike of us (not the preacher) being thankful
-Precisely how many times can one man say it's a miracle or blessing that they got a sports arena?
-Is it a miracle or blessing to get a sports arena?

I've been living half a year with my protestant inlaws in a small town, and I although I've never been a Christian of any kind, half of my blood family are Frenchy Catholics and the tiny town Catholic church is a Frenchy Catholic church.

I've been thinking of going not because I have a whiff of belief in the Christian god, but because I want to hear people say that charity and goodness and loving thy neighbor is a thing that humans should do, and hear that people don't need to share my beliefs to share my values.

Also a couple hours a week where my inlaws would not be seen dead. And if I ever became a Christian it sure as heck would not be part of the protestant tradition from which this supply side Jesus shiat sprang.

The only true Christian that I personally know is my brother, due to the fact that his name is Christian. He is an atheist. I still wonder why my parents, who are agnostic, named him Christian. I used to sing sister Christian *at* him when we were kids, then I would promptly get punched, or something the like. He's the older one.

Yes. Some infinitesimally small portion of atheists like to go to meetings. Usually the ones who have gone to church all their lives.

They represent a negligible proportion of atheists so let's write a new story about them every week.

One of the perks of atheism is not having to get churched up every Sunday morning and go out when you want to stay home, drink coffee, watch Meet the Press, and take an early nap.

The Rastafari call a kind of a bong made out of coconuts or wood a "chalice" and according to their faith, when they smoke ganja, they are partaking of a holy sacrament.

Jamaica is a very interesting place. It has more churches per square mile than any other country in the world.

Foundling: Maybe what Jesus said in the Gospel has value even without a magical back story.

People won't take good advice unless there's a story to go with it.

Living among Mormons, I see it in action on a daily basis. I could give a shiat whether Joseph pulled all of it out of his ass when I see the effect it has on the community.

I can't speak for everyone in the negative column with pill habits and depression and all of that, but watching my peers grow up, it was the ones who took it way too seriously, or even literally, who ended up with problems.

It's allegory.
