Well, when the tarrifs destroy farming and exports, yeah. They'll be homeless and looking for handouts and wonder why their Republican saviors eliminated all those programs which they though were only for black people.

But the right wing has waged a pretty successful war on words, so we've got that going for us.

Socialism and progressivism are "extreme" ideas only according to the neocons, and their word isn't worth shiat.

Trump's election, depending on you you ask, was either proof that people who have been living on the edge are crying out for someone who promises change and action, regardless of how practical, possible, or honest those promises may be, or backlash by a white population against minorities who they see are gaining on them in economic and social standing and who view the trend as a zero-sum game where any gains by blacks, Hispanics, gays, and women mean losses for them.  The reality is probably a mixture of both.

We've known for a while that many people are supportive of progressive policies if they're presented in a politically agnostic way (eg many people loved the actual policy ideas of the ACA but hated 'Obamacare').

Sanders obviously struck something within a number of voters that Hillary didn't (though it would be remiss to not point out that Hillary's primary win showed that Hillary's message resonated with more voters than Sanders').

Still, there are a lot of voters (and potential voters) out there who don't necessarily follow politics closely, don't understand the logistical and legislative  barriers to actually implementing various plans and policies, don't understand the secondary (but still vitally important) benefits of a particular party holding power such as committee chairs and power over judicial and other appointments, and don't necessarily see the connection between improving the Democratic party's position on the national stage and improving their lives if they aren't being told 'this is what we're going to do specifically for you right now'.

It could well be good for the Democrats to start pounding pavement and talking to these people and showing what we're going to do for them 'right now'.  Regardless of whether it's possible to implement those plans in the short term maybe it's more important to drive engagement and turnout first.  Excite the voters and see if that can create a big enough wave to get enough Democrats elected so that some of those promises can actually be fulfilled.

We shouldn't treat this as an excuse (or opportunity) for an intra-party schism, but rather work together as a parry to help identify policy positions and ideas that centrist and progressive Democrats can both embrace to reach, engage, and excite more voters in the coming months.

Flyover country loves socialism.  They live in dying, blighted towns, but they get infrastructure they can't afford, they get paid not to plant crops, and they get health care and SS checks.  They just don't want black people to get anything.

I was gonna say...they already benefit from the socialist programs we offer.

Maybe the problem with socialism was having it forced on everybody all at once. Maybe we're slowly introducing it as it was meant to be little by little. Maybe their are capitalists fighting against it. But maybe we're still winning...little by little.

I always thought we needed to grow the capitalist agenda and support it so hard and so fast that it would ruin everything so people could see the truth.

I'm not a socialist...I'm an anarchist. Not a bomb-throwing, punk-listening anarchist. Just somebody who thinks we'd be better off if we didn't have a middle-man and we just worked together to make life better for everybody. Teach responsible attitudes. Most of the irresponsible tendencies we have are grown by what we feel is necessitated by what we grew up holding dear. Authority, religion, money, etc.

That stuff was taught to us way back when we were dummies by people who were slightly less dumb.

Well sure. South African apartheid has been described as:

1. socialism for white (Afrikaans-speaking) workers and peasants
2. capitalism for white (Anglophone) capitalists
3. Nazism for everyone else, black, "Colored" and "Asian" alike.

I'm sure Trumpistanis would greatly appreciate a lush welfare state just for them, along with guaranteed employment in heavily protected domestic industries, however inefficient they became---again, for Real Americans only.

I still haven't found an authentic one.  It says a lot.

Do they want socialism? Sure, eventually. First they want to kick out all of the non-white folks because why should they get the same gubermint moneychecks as them. And that is the real reason why the southern US went from being mostly Democrat to full-on republican.

Racism is the biggest barrier to socialism in America. Trump basically promised socialism-for-whites-only to a significant portion of the population and they LOVED the idea.

Exactly this. It's not that these folks don't want tax-funded schools, health care, or a higher minimum wage. It's that they don't want "those lazy people in the city" (code for "blacks and hispanics" and possibly even non-Christians and non-heterosexuals) to benefit from it, and their bigotry is so deeply-ingrained that they're willing to cripple themselves financially, socially, and not see any benefits for anybody if it keeps "those people" from getting anything at all.

We don't have a problem with socialism. We have a major problem with self-destructive bigotry.

Interesting note, in Jr High I went to a off-campus 'seminary' class for Mormons.  One day the teach was talking about the ideal society and it was exactly socialism.  I looked around the classroom to see if anyone else had caught on and saw nothing.  I don't remember what magic word they used instead of socialism and I'm not going to crack open their scriptures to try and find it.

While they may want that, they're unfortunately rather hostile towards the public school system.  They want taxpayers to fund their kids' tuition to private and religious schools instead.

On a serious note, I am from a coastal city and haven't visited some parts of middle America. So can someone explain whether there is any merit to what this author is saying, because from what I gather, it seems like the people would support policies that help the average working man if they are presented in the right way. Is there something I am missing?

The Republican party is making socialism look better every day. Ever since they embraced the Nazis and white supremacists, they have unarguably become the party of evil. If the devil hates socialism so much, then it must be because it's good.

This, and EVERY thread. If conservatives had to honestly present their policies, and their effects on average Americans, to voters, the GOP would be defunct as a national party. And LOLibertarians would just be pointed at and mocked--oh, well I guess no change there.
