We knew the cars weren't roadworthy years ago. But neither are most Fords.

I will say it again and again... Elon Musk is a visionary. If you were dumb enough to buy a Tesla, that's on you. But his ideas about our future are worth listening to.

He just sent Elon a very lovely hot cocoa sampler box, stop taking things out of context!

What's wrong with buying one exactly?

I would actually say the reverse. He's a jackass and gets way more credit for his intelligence than he deserves.

Is that..... different than a VW or Nissan cheating on emissions, or a Toyota whose main computer is so full of spaghetti code it can just decide to accelerate, or endless recalls because of airbags turning into shotguns, ignition switches turning into firebombs, or any of the countless other things the established brands lie about because it's profitable until someone finds out?

This is just Corporate America at work.

Yeah. I'm no Muskovite but this "whistleblower's" actions are all questionable. If he's got something real his lawyer and the safety agencies will deal with it appropriately. But from here he looks like a hysterical liar.

I think the guy is straight lying but if he had the access Tesla contends he did then he could easily have looked at the records of previous quarters.

I don't think any of the actual substance of the claims are too far fetched, it's the manner in which he is doing it belies any notion of proof or truth.

And we're done.

The difference between "whistleblower" and "malicious bullshiat artist" is that the former has evidence to back up claims, while the latter does not. This guy's pretty much in the latter category, so far.

So, unless he's got something to back up his bloviation, he can fark off widdershins.

Well he took gigs of data. But no one has capitalized on them yet so they're probably devoid of any proof.

I like to give whistleblowers the benefit of the doubt because they're a vital resource when dealing with megacorps in this day and age. But this guy probably is just deluded.

If he's doing newsworthy stuff, should there not be threads about it?

When does he start financing Tesla through cocaine sales?

It's been 10 years.  Tesla hasn't made a yearly profit yet, and only managed a single quarter of profit back in 2015.

What can't go on forever, won't.  Eventually, Musk has to start making a profit of some kind, or Tesla must fold.

so have rubber, potatoes, medicine, peppers, hot peppers, corn, beans, tomatoes and quite a few others have been around for thousands of years.

White people discover them a couple hundred years ago in South and North America and act like they invented ALL of it, which turned into Pizza, Chips, Chili, every current nations favorited cuisine... spicy curry.  Except the British.  Fish and chips?  farking British cuisine and its oxymoron nature.  Irish potatoe?  Because they were humble enough to try it.  Soviet and Nazi war machines?  Fed by potatoes.  Then used rubber to insulate electricity, which was used as rain coats in South America.  After using 80% of people dying of disease as a reason to kill and 'concentrate' the survivors.

Maybe ALL white people should get their eyes checked.

Is there some other electric car company I should support instead?  German or Japanese?  Fine by me just get this damn gas based vehicles out of the economy and shut the fark up SCIENCE DAMMIT

basically he didn't have to help but offered a hand which does take up his personal time I assume.

I guess people would want him to put his time there while also putting all his time into whatever expectation they have of Tesla.  I mean sure rip on his business model or practices of whatever, but it seems more like people just want Musk do whatever they say, kind of like how religious people want all of us to just do what they say, because its convenient for them as opposed to actually doing something themselves.

I mean if they were actually doing something, wouldn't they be doing it instead of posting on FARK?

Anyways yeah fark Musk.  Musk fark.  Musk you.

Tesla always has some questions.  Not about the underlying concepts but about the ability to transition to large scale production that makes a profit.  So far the trends haven't been supporting the capability to do this, but so far investors are willing to give some time to do so.  You have to wonder how much longer investors will give him.  This isn't a shot at Musk, trying to create a car company in this day and age beyond a limited production hypercar (although that is the roots of Tesla) is extremely challenging and could be doomed to failure.

Profitable large scale industrial manufacturing is, in a phrase, Not Easy. I can't imagine the specific hurdles you have to overcome as I don't know much of anything about it.

The things I do know about other types of manufacturing (silicon chips and ICs) is that it's so intensely complicated that no single person can completely contain the knowledge of the whole process in their head (from top to bottom).

Large scale industrial manufacturing is probably one of those things that throwing more money at won't appreciably make any difference in overall. And I would presume the cost to build a factory wouldn't be recouped after over a decade *at least*.

I wouldn't want to be in Musk's position. This might not be a problem that just gets solved with more money or more smarts or more innovation.

"Elon Musk is cutting corners, lying to investors and putting thousands of cars out there that are unfit for the road."

Seems like this should be simple enough to test. All we really need is the date on which the unfit cars were built. After that it's pretty straightforward, locate where cars built on that date ended up, and inspect them. If they're really feeling fancy buy a few of them and disassemble them.

There's dreaming of something.

There's sketching out one's dreams or otherwise quantifying them.

There's initial research into the technical subjects of one's dreams.

There's hard research into the technical subjects of one's dreams that transitions into engineering research.

There's engineering test implementations of various parts for one's dreams.

There's significant engineering implementations of prototype systems based on one's dreams.

There's full-scale prototyping of working assemblies of one's dreams.

There's small-scale boutique production of one's dreams.

There's full-scale production of one's dreams.

Musk's SpaceX and Tesla companies are sitting between boutique production and full-scale production, arguably closer to full production. Most conventional automakers treated electric cars as a means to meet government requirements, not as a means to actually make good cars. Tesla is the only modern highway-rated electric car manufacturer with multiple models and significant sales. Sure their sales are small compared to the rest of the automakers, but their presence is compelling changes. SpaceX is getting government contracts on used first-stages, and is working toward being man-rated for LEO.

There are dreamers that never get beyond initial musings, and there are dreamers that figure out how to make what they dream about. Musk appears to have a good dose of the latter.
