They view facts as bias?

It helps when there's a huge, full-time staff in Russia testing those algorithms so they can be abused to meddle in foreign elections, plus it helps when people here arent paid enough to just buy ad-free subscriptions to social networks or that it's not illegal for them to take money from foreign companies buying ad space.

Ken Tomlinson investigated NPR for bias and he broke the place pretty good.

Maybe they can do the same for Facebook.

They're mostly white males, so their complaints get taken seriously automatically, regardless of how frivolous they are.

Seriously.

"Merchants have no country. The mere spot they stand on does not constitute so strong an attachment as that from which they draw their gains." -- Thomas Jefferson

The Republicans and other despots around the world can be vindictive assholes to those they dislike so they're sucking up to the GOP in order to preserve their riches. They don't care what the Republicans do to the rest of our country as long as they and their money are left alone.

"Much bleaker is Dr. Johnson's Seattle-suitable, "secret agent" racism plan. Basically, white nationalists meet in secret at conventions like Northwest Forum while paying "lip service to diversity" at their day jobs. They move into positions of power where they can hire other racists and keep non-whites from getting into the company. Two years ago, this method would have seemed like a total joke, but these guys really do mostly work in tech, and they were doing a lot of networking."

"Facebook announced in May that it would convene a committee to study political bias on its platform. The committee will be led by Jon Kyl, a former Republican Senator who currently works as a corporate lobbyist."

No, guess again.  it's Fark.com
All these tech companies are in it for the money.  No shocker there.  They are afraid that the conservatives running the country will pass laws or enact regulations that will affect their profits.  So they bend over backwards to please them in order to keep the money flowing. They would do the same for anyone who had the power to cut their profits and/or put them out of business.

This is it, not money.

Oh the money helps but the tech companies are already richer than god. It really is ideological.

It's not that techbros are republican. It's that they're white cisgendered heterosexual males with money. Immensely privileged they think that tech and the internet will be a great equalizer. You can't be racist online because no one will know your true skin color.

I'm serious. They're that dumb and idealistic. They've never had to deal with harassment so they think it's not a problem. And lo and behold their platforms are used to launch harassment daily.

That's why it is significant that the top executives at the nation's most powerful tech companies have revealed themselves to be easy marks for right-wing activists. Over the last two years conservatives have launched a determined campaign to receive more favorable treatment from massive technology companies.

Strzok was supposed to be a key in the imaginary conspiracy that Trump's congressional lackeys and media fantasists have desperately tried to write as history. The idea that his text messages poison the entire Mueller investigation was a pillar of their defense of the president. This morning they were going for a quick kill. They needed Strzok to flail, and wilt. The Gowdy, Goodlatte, and Gaetz types needed their grandstanding, dick-waving mock outrage to leave Strozk shaking and begging for mercy.

Strozk had none of it. In this morning's round he left the Trumpists of the House staggered in their corner, cut and shaky, wondering where Stozok learned to hit back that hard.

funnily enough, the opinion piece i got immediately underneath tfa demonstrates the depth of the misunderstanding of the problem

it begins:

"Those who forget the lessons of televised congressional hearings are doomed to repeat them, which is why the morning segment of the Capitol Hill show trial of veteran FBI agent and former head of the Bureau's Counterespionage division Peter Strzok turned into a disaster for Republicans."

unfortunately, when a significant percentage of the top-positioned highlight videos consumers find or are given via search and social media have been cut by people whose only notion of consistency is in portraying a victory that is consistent with their ideological agenda, then there is no need at all for the concluding comment that 'The Gowdy, Goodlatte, and Gaetz types needed their grandstanding, dick-waving mock outrage to leave Strozk shaking and begging for mercy,' only that they are able to suggest that 'The Gowdy, Goodlatte, and Gaetz types left Strozk shaking and begging for mercy.'

Working in tech I see these people all the time.

I started thinking it has all been planned, and this sounds stupid but honestly, it was when Youtube started feeding me Alt-Right rap.

I listen to hardcore, ghetto-bumping, fark the establishment, mostly black militant rap. But here Youtube is directing me to alt-right whiteboy rappers.

I can excuse an algorithm farking up once or twice but constantly trying to feed me alt-right BS when I only really watch hearthstone tournies and listen to music there is not random.

This is true and continually, mindbogglingly ironic, since computers and networks rely on highly regulated and monitored protocols in machine tolerances and communication strategies. The Internet, its origins and development, and its continued maintenance, all work on cooperation and concensus. W3C UN-ITU DARPA FCC etc.

I guess it's basement dwelling and wanking with keyboards that appeals to the sociopathic but it's not what made the stuff work.

Actually it's far simpler than that: If they start then they end up stuck trying to guess which speech is "acceptable" and which speech is "offensive"... today. Look at Twitter, they recently had feminists crying because they were banning long-time feminists.

That's the simple reason, they don't want the headache.
