Locking people up can be very profitable if you're completely morally bankrupt.

Gov. Kay Ivey ordered that the money no longer go to "sheriffs personally." Instead any excess will go to a county general fund or an account established for the sheriff's official use

What an improvement!

Critics said the practice had incentivized abuse of prisoners.

Critics, people with more than more neuron...

It is.  The old system was that a certain amount of money went in and, by alchemy, much of it disappeared into the sheriff's personal bank account. There was no way to check on how much because records were not kept.  But if it has to go into the general fund or an official sheriff account, it can at least be tracked.  "You were given $X, $X-$Y appeared in this account, so you spent $Y on prisoners' food."  That makes it easy to determine if minimal standards are being met.

It has been my honor to serve the people of this county, but it is time to let someone else have the reins. I will move on to the next stage of my life, retirement (in an obscure foreign country)."

I much prefer a system where you have to use prisoner food money on the prisoners.  I'm just old fashioned that way.

Cannibalism cuts down on food AND housing budgets. These sheriffs need to learn how to play the game right.

Ooh I dunno. The whole "public funds should be used for public purposes" thing sounds an awful lot like socialism.

Not like it's difficult to sell people on a narrative that "they're all there because they did something wrong, so fark'm"

"Morally bankrupt" isn't too terribly high of a bar to clear in these cases in the current state of affairs

This is the last straw. If they take this free lunch away, it's really not worth it to be a sheriff.

I forget what show it was, MSNBC's Lockdown or something similar but it was one show that said jail lunches are nothing more then a baloney sandwich, a piece of fruit and a cardboard container of milk.

I don't know about you, but I hate baloney, and I will not drink milk. If I were ever arrested, I would loose so much weight.

If you support today's Republican party, you are either dangerously stupid or dangerously evil. I view you and your support of this atrocity of a political party as a direct threat to my family and you will be treated accordingly. In other words, fark your feelings, Trumpers.

Class, what conclusions may we draw about Republicans?

Thanks.

Wasn't there a story a few months ago, about a Texas prison (or school?) that paid for steaks and ribs, that the sheriff (or superintendent) was selling to a local restaurant?

What's really appalling is it's still not against the law. The legislature has to make it against the law.

I'm sure the Alabama legislature is full of people who hate corruption and feel really responsible for the prisoner's under the state's care.

If one really thinks about it, the minimum amount of ill-gotten money that one would need to have in order to justify abandoning one's existing life and moving to a non-extradition country is pretty damn high. It would need to be high enough to let one afford to not work again while still maintaining a decent lifestyle, and might need to account for health care or home care as one ages.

I don't see doing it for less than ten million bucks, and even then that's averaging $200,000 a year equivalent to income. That may seem like a lot, but that $10,000,000 might not earn interest or be usable for investment/growth, and inflation is always eating at the value of one's money. That equivalent of $200,000 a year might also be eaten into quickly in one's later years if one has health problems.

Since what these sheriffs have done wasn't illegal, they don't actually have to run. They simply have to stop doing it, and simple retirement is probably enough if they don't think they'll be able to keep their fingers out of the cookie jar.

Alabama's real state motto: "More backwards than you can possibly fathom"

As an adult, I have lived in the following jurisdictions in the US:  AL, AR, CA, CT, DC, FL, MI, NC, NY, RI, VA, and WA.

By far, Alabama is the worst governed jurisdiction of them all.  Even worse than the DC city government, and that's saying something.

Rightly so. My bad. I didn't proof-read my post.

English, even for a primary language isn't simple. Funny, was watching a Youtube video of American phrases that British people find appalling. One of them being "I couldn't care less". It really bugs them when we say that.

Hey, don't go too far,Alabama.

Some of those prisoners are pretty damned fat and careful application of the old way can result in a win, win, win for sheriffs, inmates *and* the public healthcare burden!

Republicans are a specific group - 1% on top, gullible haters as grass roots. They agree on everything.
Democrats are a conglomeration of everyone else. The only thing they agree on is disgust for conservatives.

Morally bankrupt is inaccurate.  They have morals.  Their morals are just perverted by their worldview.

My thoughts on this:

1) Prisons should never - I repeat, NEVER - be for profit.
2) To quote TFA: "In 2011, another attorney general, Luther Strange, contradicted King's opinion, ruling that "neither the sheriff nor the county may use the surplus for any purpose other than future expenses in feeding prisoners.""
3) fark the Sherriffs that are doing this for personal gain.

Fark'em.  Our Founding Fathers fought them for tax-free tea and the right to butcher their bastard language our own way.

I couldn't care less.

All fees, commissions, percentages, allowances, charges and court costs heretofore collectible for the use of the sheriff and his deputies, excluding the allowances and amounts received for feeding prisoners, which the various sheriffs of the various counties shall be entitled to keep and retain, except in those instances where the county commission directs such allowances and amounts to be paid into the general fund of the county by proper resolution passed by said county commission of said county, shall be collected and paid into the general fund of the county.

Underlined sections indicate the relevant continuity of the previous state of affairs, with bold for the significant exception.

Having read that...WHAT THE EVERKILLING F*CK????!!!!!

Even outside of the madness of the exception, the entire thing is worded and formatted so poorly, so loosely, it's effectively guaranF*CKINGteed to be abused.

I can only conclude it was either deliberately written to be easily abused, or written by an utter incompetent.

In my universe, yes. Yes they are but its not only them, its the members of congress, the house, etc.

Oh, they all might "Swear to protect" the constitution and put us voters first but in reality, it's all about them and how they can screw us over.

Well that's the impression I get.

Sadly and because no one can be trusted to lead, we must turn them out of office and declare an anarchy.
