Sadly they aren't giving out that coin.

"release" isn't really appropriate because only a few hundred will be minted and they're never "released" to the public, but likely handed out to big donors.  Only 250 of the NK coins were minted.

I'm holding out for the Trump impeachment commemorative coin.

Not release. Sell.

It's like the CEO of The Franklin Mint had been elected. "Didn't throw up on the Japanese Prime Minister, here's a commemorative coin to celebrate! Only 12 easy payments of $59.95 each!"

Nothing will be more ridiculous than this challenge coin; at least, I hope not.

These guys' fetish for challenge coins is beyond pathetic. Especially since they're the same kind of people who will rant until they're blue in the face about how participation trophies are destroying the youth of America.

I conclude that there will be a commemorative coin on how he got out of the Stormy Daniels thing, and he'll whine to the skies about how sales should have been double what they were, because Hillary forced people not to buy them.

I hate Drumpf, but challenge coins are cheap and common as small thank you's to troops who are assigned or attached to a Presidential detail for events.  I've got two from President W, one from VP Cheney, one from SecDef Rummy, a couple from every MAJCOM, wing and squadron I served under, a couple of different generals, CMSGTAF Jim Finch and others.  One of the ones from Bush was the ones he issued to all officers attached to him for his visit in Feb 2005 to the NATO summit.

I don't get challenge coins.   Is this a new thing?  I was in the army back in the early 90s, with reserve time up to the aughties, and I never saw one.  Or heard anyone refer to one.  Is this officer shiat?

I was Army back in the 90s and I have several challenge coins. One from being in the regimental smoker, a coin and belt buckle (which I'm wearing right now) for completing the Manchu Mile, one for carrying the Liscum Bowl for the regimental ball, and a few others for quasi-badassery (marksmanship and PT stuff). A Blackhorse coin from 1st Cav while attached to one of their brigades during an NTC rotation for a more-than-successful insertion into OPFOR territory and ruining their day. I also have a near-complete collection of challenge coins from SANS for their pentesting track for winning their CTF exercises and placing in the top 10 in Netwars.

Maybe you were in low-speed units.  I hadn't heard of them when I was at my first duty station in Germany.

I also got coined during a job interview. The guy interviewing me used to be in my unit, and left right before I got there. Fortunately, I had one of my coins in my wallet.

I got a bunch when I worked for the Air Force Association, most of them I gave to people I knew in the military. Funniest/weirdest thing I ever got was an invitation to the Chinese embassy to celebrate the anniversary of their military. Don't know how they knew me or my address, creepy.

Do the coins feature Russian hegemony rising magnificently above the ashes of our treaty alliances, like a phoenix?

I swear I'm not being snarky here - is this normal? I don't recall other presidents in my time issuing "commemorative coins" of any kind, but maybe it just didn't get any press in the past?

I'm thinking the same thing. From all my time in the Army (80's) I've never even heard of them. What kind of nonsense are these things?!

2018-07-12 04:30:23 PM
When the fark did the White House start shilling commemorative coins? Is this a new thing or something that's always happened, but other presidents didn't feel like they needed a coin to deflect from their failures?

This is like Clinton giving out coins with the words "That depends on what the meaning of 'is' is."

If I had photoshop skills, the coin's tails should be the Western Europe map overlaid with a mushroom cloud.

Eh, it varies.  Usually they're given out by higher ranking officers and NCOs, or struck by the commanders of some units, or for political items or events.  Back when I was in Basic Training I was assigned to a newly formed squadron.  The 324th TRS aced its first ORI, and all officers, instructors, and trainees got a coin for the event.  I always thought the Army was pretty liberal with handing them out.  Plus, while they're fun to collect, anyone who carries one unironically is usually a shiatbag.

OTAN?

What, were they unsure of which way to spell NATO so they decided to just cover all the bases?

Yep, extremely normal, but usually low key.  Drumpf, being the attention whore he is, has to show off all the 'cool shiat' that has his name on it.

I'm a little confused to be honest.

headline: White House releases commemorative coin for Trump's NATO trip

comment in article:  White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said after that coin was released that the White House itself is not involved in making the coins.
"We don't have any input on the design, the manufacturer, the process, in any capacity," Sanders said at a press briefing.

I don't recall too many coin releases during the Obama Administration but I want' really following or they weren't making their way into the news. so to not answer you question, I don't know if this is normal. is anything normal anymore?

Hmm, Air Force One, and a building. If only there was some sort of way to symbolize the kind of damage trump is doing to NATO. You know, like 9 to 11 different ways.
