shastacola: I predict The Americans for best drama series.

Especially as it just ended.  I'd like to see Tatiana Maslany with for Orphan Black, but the show ended so long ago it's off the short term memory for most voters.  Claire Foy might have a chance now that she's off The Crown.

Jesse Plemmons, USS Callister.  Oh snap, Black Mirror.

I'm still tetrying figure out why everyone in Gilead hasn't starved to death given the allocation of about 90% of the male workforce being assigned to standing around with assault rifles on residential streets every 20 feet.

And what is the purpose of the colonies?  It's not like land is at a premium with the rapidly shrinking population.  If they only exist to be punitive, it's an absurdly inefficient mechanism.

I love that Stranger Things is up there with GoT for Best Drama Series.

I'm not sure what their relative screen time was, but how anyone could have watched Jodie Comer in Killing Eve and thought, "Sandra Oh deserves an award" is beyond me.

I've seen both. Stranger Things is the better of the two.

I believe the colonies are, as of now, uninhabitable due to toxins. (hence part of the reasons sterility is rampant)  They ship you to the colonies to help clean up what you can before the poison soil and air and general shiat conditions cause you to go belly up.

I think directing is lost on anyone who didn't direct the two GoT episodes nominated.  The story may have been ... problematic...but getting The Wall to come down was epic AF...and they do not skimp on their battle scenes...just think those are gonna be pretty hard to beat.

Agriculture isn't as labor intensive as it used to be.  The entire show is a metaphor for the treatment of women in the Middle East and the dangers of that spreading to the West.  Many cities in the middle east have a large chunk of the male workforce standing on corners with assault rifles, while a few poor schmucks till the fields.  Some sort of NRA paradise, I suppose.

There was a nuclear war.  They are removing the top layer of soil to clear the fallout.  But my understanding is that the sterility predated the war.

What I don't get is why they are bothering.  They don't need the land.  They don't have any practical way of using it.  It's an absolutely massive waste of resources.

Gilead is not exactly a bastion of logical thought and reason.  They are, however, crazy awesome at punishing womenfolk for...reasons.

But the grocery store seems to imply that there's no more modern agriculture.

Or maybe the neighborhood with all the commanders is just atypical.

But that's necessary to the premise of the show.  You can't have the story without it.  Like the wind storm in The Martian.

It's all the stuff that makes no sense but doesn't serve the plot that bugs me.

Gleeman: Reminds me, I need to start watching Black Mirror.

My advice:  Be prepared to not binge it.

Some people can, but from my experience most people can't - myself included.  I need time to decompress and process (and sometimes calm down) between episodes.  It worked out quite well during the first to seasons, because they were broadcast weekly.

\Actually, you might want to start with the Netflx stuff (season 3 on) and go back to 1 and 2 later.
\\Or at least watch S1E2 before S1E1.

They should just change the name to 'The Cable Emmy Awards' & be done with it.

At least (unless I missed it) nothing from Will and Grace was nommed.  I caught two episodes of it and I don't remember the original run, but it was honestly some of the worst television I'd ever seen.

Oh it's not that bad.   Once you get through Season 4, a man farking a pig but pretty much everybody lives at the end is downright uplifting and wholesome for a Black Mirror episode.
