"The call was arranged between Papa John's executives and marketing agency Laundry Service. It was designed as a role-playing exercise for Schnatter in an effort to prevent future public-relations snafus. Schnatter caused an uproar in November 2017 when he waded into the debate over national anthem protests in the NFL and partly blamed the league for slowing sales at Papa John's.

On the May call, Schnatter was asked how he would distance himself from racist groups online. He responded by downplaying the significance of his NFL statement. "Colonel Sanders called blacks n-----s," Schnatter said, before complaining that Sanders never faced public backlash.

Actually I think their pizza is the best between the big deliver chains; Domino's, Pizza Hut and Papa John's.  He's an asshat.

2018-07-11 11:37:34 PM
It should also be obvious by now that Schatter's visceral and public opposition to ACA early on was evidence of his racism as well.

Also evidence that our society largely still does not tolerate it.

2018-07-11 11:42:37 PM
So, are they going to totally rebrand as something else to take the stink off?
Because they've sorta been "That Racist Pizza Delivery Place" for awhile now.

Hey did you guys know that the KKK was started by Democrats? Who's the real racist now, huh?

I'm partial to Dominoes. Although the garlic butter and peppers PJ kicks in are a nice touch.
But I stopped patronizing them when he put his 2 cents in about providing his employees healthcare. It would have made them raise the price of a pie about 25 cents. Worth it to me if it meant his employees benefited. They could have gotten my business easily with that move but no he had to rail against it.

Domino's tastes good when it's fresh, but the cheese is pretty much rubber when it's reheated, so it makes me wonder how much of it was created in a food lab.

Man, I live in a part of the country where people will argue whether Greek pizza is pizza, and then argue which House of Pizza is the best. Had to order Papa John's once because of a blizzard and being stoned and everything else being closed.

Worst. Pizza. Ever.

It's unimaginable that people in the USA live where Papa John's might actually be the best pizza place around.

There are small towns where Casey's is the only "pizza", and it's approximately 75% grease.

When I was in college in the 90's in College Park MD, Papa Johns was our go-to pizza.  I tried it later and they had obviously changed (cheapened) a lot of the menu.  Even the pies I used to like were just awful.

I don't know what Casey's pizza is but I'm Irish and even the idea of Irish pizza is goddamned depressing.

Papa John's is the only pizza I've ever eaten where nibbling on the tip of a slice carried the potential of ripping the entire sheet of cheese off of it, toppings and all.

I think they make their cheese out of Class IIIA Kevlar scraps.

'Round here Hungry Howies is the grease bomb.  FWIW for chain pizza, if Im going to get it, Little Caesars deep dish is good when fresh IMO.  Fortunately Ive got a few local mom and pop places run by ex New Yorkers that can make a damn good pie.

What exactly does that mean? Was he supposed to say outrageous stuff so they could point out what things needed to stay inside his head? Because I've never heard of that as a treatment for racist idiocy.

And if Colonel Sanders never got called out for using the N-word, it could very well be that the man died 37 years ago, after living to the ripe old age of 90. He probably said it so far back that it was a common thing. Besides, you don't get away with shiat just because someone else did it.

2018-07-12 01:50:54 AM
Well most of my pizza is costco frozen pizza, so I'm in no position to comment about whether Papa John's pizza is any better or worse than the mainstream competition.

Casey's General Store? I've had that. Not the best. I wouldn't say it is better than Papa John's but people keep telling me that Papa Johns has really gone downhill in the last ten years that I tried it, so I cannot say.

I have several places near me that average perhaps $5 more per  large pie and are more inventive, densely loaded (value) and fresh than Schnatter's offerings. And the delivery guys rush to you once word gets around that you dole out nugs with the tip.

Also, they're locally owned. That's important to me. I love my city and have to support her in any way I can.  Local pizza is one of many ways I do, and I hope that it all adds up to a better neighborhood.

My initial reflex upon seeing a headline that said Papa Johns dude used a racial slur during an rpg session was that he was playing something like Fallout tabletop rpg and called a ghouls by a slur.

I knew that wouldn't be the case and already knew Papa Johns founder and other execs are garbage people (no offense to my favorite Muppet Oscar). But it did lead to us, tonight, at my weekly D&D group, looking up traditional racial slurs for fictional races. Which was far more fun than contemplating these shiatheads at length.
