I can just see the conversation

Officer: Sir, do you know why I pulled you over?

Guy in Truck with Minigun:  No officer, I sure don't

Officer:  Sir, why do you need a minigun on a state highway?

Guy iTwMg:  Well it's for coyotes.  Also, I don't recognize your authority to pull me over and ask me about my minigun.

Originally, MOS 16R and I was trained as a Vulcan/Chaparral crewman at Fort Bliss in 1970 and fired the 20mm.  It had two rates of fire, 1,000 rpm and 3,000 rpm, so they're going to need an additional and bigger truck just to haul around ammo for the gun.  After AIT, I was assigned to a Chaparral unit, C Battery, 5/67 ADA (MOS changed to 16P) and stayed at Fort Bliss until my 2 years were over. Not bad considering I thought I was going to Nam when I was drafted.  Actually, it was even better.  I got a 6 month drop and only spent 18 months and 3 days in the Army (they kept you for at least 18 months and 1 day so you were eligible for GI Bill benefits).

T-55/T-62 after a turret blow-off due to fuel/ammo detonation, probably (thinking more T-55, due to the main gun).

Apparently a lot of used vehicles from the US get sent over there.  I liked the article where some ISIS fighters were shown with a "technical" that had a logo from a US company, something like "Bob's Discount Plumbing" on it.  The original owner was not happy with the ensuing press...

I honestly seem to recall one with anti-aircraft or something so absurd, you'd think the kick-back would topple the small pickup.

[YouTube video: Recoiless Rifle fail]

Damn. Looks like an ill-designed canon.

Here. This is the one I had in mind. Headline says ISIS:
[i.dawn.com image 800x480]

It's not a cannon, it's a recoilless rifle. Looks like a B-11. And the design is perfectly serviceable, the problem wasn't the recoil (which is why the back half of that truck didn't go flying down the road), it was the gasses venting out the back of the rifle. Those gasses are how those rifles counteract the recoil normally associated with the rather large rounds that they are designed to fire. Normally the large RCLs are towed emplacement weapons, they have their own trailer and there's no obstruction behind the rifle. Tossing one in the back of a truck and leaving the tailgate up to obstruct the breech vents is a good way to rip off said tailgate and the rear fender it's minimally attached to, which is exactly what happened in that video.

RCLs are man portable as well, Carl Gustavs are issued to US Rangers and USSOCOM still to this day, and are quite effective. They're like the shotguns of man-portable artillery with respect to versatility. Anything from HEAT to grapeshot.

Had they just kept the rifle on the trailer it was attached to and put a hitch on the truck they'd have had a much more effective weapon. Infinitely more agile in a high-tension situation (one guy to hold onto the hitch tongue and position the rifle, the other to sit in the gunner's seat and make fine adjustments and fire) and gives you more options to engage because the truck can nominally have an MG mounted and move to flank or pin down the target.

To be fair though, it was a bit more than that.  France provided air power neutralizing the Libyan air force and also provided the trucks some of which were mounted with Milan missiles in addition to heavy machine gun mounted units.  Still an impressive achievement defeating a more well equipped force with superior tactics. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_War

Does it truly surprise you that someone would sell weapons to both sides of a conflict if the nation they were citizens of were not an actual party de jure to?

Given the type of warfare going on, that is a very effective improvised weapon against ground forces.  It is highly vulnerable to drones and aircraft as they can effectively target the mount beyond its range of engagement. The enemy always gets a vote and they can be creative in how they adapt to the battlefield.

How effective is he going to be really?  The attackers don't seem to be using heavy armour.

Maybe just some quad cannons to clear the airspace.
