IrieTom: Best Japanese spaghetti-western ever... [img.fark.net image 850x637]

It's an amazing film. Period. Juzo Itami is one of my favorite directors, period. He handles subject matter of all sorts with such grace and humor that you can't help but love his films. And Tampopo is one of the best meditations on food and our relationships with food, and how food ties in with family, with memories, with emotions...it's a film that, to me, outranks Eat Drink Man Woman easily for best film about food and cooking--though EDMW is a good second.

And the details on ramen are brilliant. The whole thing is just a love letter to food and family.

My doctor told me my blood pressure was fine in October.  And then my dentist told me he won't work on my teeth until I get my blood pressure down in May.  I went straight to the doctor and told him, and he doubled the dose of meds.
So kids, stay off the ramen/salt.  Use some cayenne pepper or lemon zest or something else.

When I used to eat the cheap ramen, there was a Japanese grocery near my work. They had a big aisle that was nothing but packaged ramen.

When the doctor told me to cut my sodium intake, I started reading the labels. The sodium contents were all about 800 or 1,000 mg, 30% or 40% of the RDA. Too much!

Then I found one at 300. Huzzah, I took it home! And the ramen was obviously really, really high in sodium. Very salty.

On closer inspection of the package, the sodium content was 300 cg. Centigrams. Meaning 3,000 mg. Gack.

Real ramen tastes nothing like the typical instant prepackaged stuff, and it's amazing.

In Japan, that's low. cup ramen sodium  is usually listed in grams
