Arent multi tv homes unusual in England because they have to pay a tax for each tv, and the government has special vans that drive around scanning houses for illegal tvs or something like that?

I'm not in the UK, but in Europe. The shiatty thing is, the cable company doesn't take care of this here. We have to go to a separate website and pay them something like $10usd a month to use the over the air channels and radio. (I have cable)

And the completely vague, unanswered question is about LCD screens which stream TV channels vs HD-ready TVs which don't have tuners but are sold as TVs. The former don't pay this dumb fee, the later do.

that's not how it works.

You pay the licence fee for the right to receive the bbc etc... in your place of residence. That now includes watching live tv via things like the bbc iPlayer. It's not a 'per device' tax, it's a per household one.

The old detector vans worked (allegedly) by seeing if there was current running through the external aerial on your property. Mostly they just assume everyone is watching tv and bill you, and you have to prove you're not to get off that list.

At the moment when you use the iPlayer it just asks you to tick a box to say you have a licence, eventually I expect you'll have to type your licence number and postcode into it. (It's already using the IP address to roughly decide if you're even in the country or not)

And thats why I worded it as a question. Thanks for explaining it and for not being a "somebody is wrong on the internet!" dickhead about it. :)
