I've seen Neil Young in concert.
It's more likely he ruined the show.

Isn't the show already ruined by default when Young gets onstage?

The worst types of people are those who do this sort of thing at stand-up comedy shows, when there are no instruments to drown out those annoying f*ckers. Due to people ruining shows, I pretty much won't even go see live entertainment anymore.

This.  He could have easily gone on a rant, but instead tried to explain the mindset of the rude members of the audience (and did a good job of it too, I think).

But even though we live in an age when any intelligent person can hop online and see the likely setlist

It was my understanding that there is no setlist and the he decided what he was going to play immediately before playing it.

Saw this show in Chicago on the 30th. It was great.

It was really bad a bunch of years ago when laser pointers became cheap and available. I was starting to believe that live entertainment was dead. Every damn thing I went to had to be interrupted to yell at the audience about shining lasers at the performers.

This was an acoustic show. So, rather similar circumstances.

She comes in colors everywhere: [ih0.redbubble.net image 750x1000]

Counterpoint: Drunken frat bros are Neil's core demographic, are mostly responsible for his career existing in the first place, and are entirely 100% responsible for the fact that he's still touring.  I would actually argue that they probably merit more respect and leeway from him than the other way around.

// I'm mostly being facetious, when you're at a performance you should try to not be disruptive, at least within reasonable limits.  Obviously.

My Neil Young concert CSB...

I got a free ticket to a show for his Greendale tour.  It was entertaining enough I guess but the crowd wasnt into it.  They started to get rowdy when he wasnt playing his classics to the point where he had to stop the concert and tell everyone to STFU or GTFO.  He did play some of his hits toward the end but I got the feeling the paying customers didnt realize what they signed up for.

On the upside Lucinda Williams was the opener IIRC and she was amazing.

I saw a greendale show at pine knob outside of Detroit. And yeah, it was close to a riot. I was pretty pissed myself.

I saw the Greendale tour. I has so much fun, it would not have mattered to me if he did not do a second set of some hits.

It's Neil freaking Young.  If you buy a ticket to see him in concert and you aren't open to anything, well, you should have saved your money.

The problem of dbags ruining shows has gotten drastically worse over the years. I say that as someone who has seen 100s of shows, from dive bars to stadium shows. People have just gotten ruder and more selfish. It really sucks.

Cool Story Time:
I saw the band Giant Sand more than a decade ago, and they were touring with a lot of Mexican musicians. Some fool in the crowd kept yelling "Freebird!" Finally, the leader of the band just stops everyone and goes into this story about how he's tried to explain the phenomenon of people yelling "Freebird!" to his Mexican colleagues. How he's never been able to get across the meaning that people feel that song has. He gestured to the guy that was yelling and said "Perhaps, you sir, can finally help them to understand what makes this song so special. What can you tell us?" The audience went silent as every eye and ear was focused on the guy. He looked around, then looked down. Then he placed his hands around his mount and shouted.

"STAIRWAY!"

I would have loved to have seen that. The only time I ever saw him was when I won front row, middle 2 tickets for his tour with Booker T & the MG's as his backup band. It was great, and we got to sit at the feet of Cropper and Dunn.

i saw three of the Greendale shows - they were fantastic. the first show I saw (in Pittsburgh) was before the album even came out.  he played the entire album with this bad high school play going on around the band, and he'd come out for an encore with a few older songs.  the folks in the audience that only wanted to hear "cinnamon girl" and "heart of gold" were incredibly pissed and walking out.  i thought it was hysterical - reminded me of his "tonight's the night" tour.  the audience never heard the album - he opened with "tonight's the night" and played the album.  the audience would boo and scream wanting to hear the hits and at the end he'd say "okay - here's one you heard before" and then would play "tonight's the night" again.

i watched the live stream of the Detroit show and i was trying to figure out why he was so pissed.  he went into a story about Bruce Berry - the roadie mentioned in Tonight's The Night - and halfway through the story he stopped and said never mind.  it was a great show with an amazing setlist - too bad assholes had to ruin it

Saw his Indy show and it was very very very good. A lot of energy for a guy of his experience. Several songs from the new album which is excellent and many of the old favorites. Part of the reason I got tix is that I'm trying not to miss the great acts I haven't seen yet (almost didn't see Bowie's last tour and Petty's penultimate tour) but this was no oldies show.
Saw a solo Neil show that was wnderful, and saw him blow in a massive storm in NOLA. Wouldn't want to hang with him but I like shows when I can't predict the setlist.
