I haven't found any of these joints to be any different than the $6 double special at Harolds down the street from my station in KC.

None of the "cult following" chains I've ever been to has lived up to the hype. They're pretty much always fine, but I come away losing respect for the opinions of people that gushed on and on about then. Whataburger is a perfect example of this.

My boss went to Italy for two weeks for her honeymoon.  She told me that the first thing she did  when they got back to San Antonio and on the way home from the airport - got Whataburger takeout.  I only eat it  when I'm on the gulf coast on the beach with a beer in hand.  y

Whataburger is ok. The 24/7 sit down capability is awesome.

What is not ok is a click bait advertisement, in a slideshow format no less.

I had my first Wottaburger in Texas 6 years ago. It was basically a Tommyburger without the chili.

This.

Although the food poisoning we got from one in San Angelo has kept the wife from returning.

Cult following?  I dunno, I lived in San Antonio, it's corporate home, for a decade and Whataburger was typically seen as a better-than-McDonald's burger place.  Which it is.

FTFY.

Whattaburger is nothing to write home about, but they're not bad either.

I seldom say this out loud, but as a native Texan, I find Whataburger to be pretty much average.

I visit SA a lot. Jim's Frontier Burger for the win.

So a 14 slide, slideshow to say it was pretty average? got it.

1: Agreed entirely.  Habit's the best of the 'premium fast food burger' chains, IMO.
2: 'Extremely' is a bit harsh, but not enough that I'd argue it.  Their burgers are decent, their fries suck.
3: I'm working on it.  (Down 45 pounds as of this morning.)

Whataburger's burgers are very good fast-food level burgers.  No more, no less.

Whataburger's chocolate shakes, on the other hand, are made of crack and magic.  I don't know what it is, but they're one of the few things I try to go out of my way to get when we're in Phoenix for Thanksgiving with the in-laws.

/ Ted's Hot Dogs is the other necessity.
// I end up at Quiktrip at least three times for gas, and end up picking up something while I'm there at least twice.

Never ate there.  A little far to go for lunch for me (used to work near 281 and Bitters).  My personal favorite was Chester's.

Like pretty much any burger place in existence, you can order it with any condiments you like.

Burger places are all pretty much the same. They can have unique toppings, cheeses, buns, or offer different side items, but in the end it's still just ground beef served between bread. What What-a-burger offers is quality and consistency.

Your food is always cooked to order, they never cook up a bunch of burgers or chicken strips and set them aside to be assembled later like many chains do. During the slow periods they even cook the fries to order, so you don't get some crap that's been sitting under a heat lamp for 20 minutes. The standard value meal comes with a 32 oz drink and a very generous helping of fries. There's nothing ground-breaking, hip, artisanal, or fancy about it, just consistently decent food at a decent price.

In-n-Out sucks
Whataburger is too much bread and a small patty but otherwise OK

5 Guys is my personal fast food favorite burger

I'm pretty sure their limited offer A-1 Thick & Hearty Burger was responsible for the 6 point jump in my A-1c level.

Whataburger doesn't have a cult flowing, folks don't line up for when opens, they're just good

Now a cult that's then chik-fik-a and in and out folks

As a lifelong Texan I love Whataburger but I would never claim it's the best ever. I usually go twice a month and their fries are awesome. What I do like about them was stated in the huge menu selections and the fact you can change any burger the way you want it. You can ask for the Texas Toast on any burger and you will get it as well as any condiment or with jalapenos etc., which is different from all the other places.

I think I would like this place. I would have to go several times or with others to find out the difference between the burgers and the difference between the Cajun and spicy chickens.

You can order it with Mayo.. Or Ketchup.. Or none of the above. They'll make it any way you want it.

Author should have asked for grilled onions.

Whataburger is ok. I've got a little "hole in the wall" burger place that's both cheaper & better (as I'm sure many of us do), but if I'm away from home I'd prefer a Whataburger over a 5Guys, as it's just as good at half the price.

I've lived in SoCal my entire life. I've always been fortunate enough to have a Tommy's within reasonable driving distance, and could not begin to calculate how many times I've eaten there. Certainly hundreds. And their chili-cheese dogs are still gustatory heroin to me (extra onions, hold the pickles).
