"I noticed they were walking up to houses with nothing in hand and one of them came back with something," the 911 caller said, according to WSYX-TV. "It seemed kind of suspicious."

Well, if that's what happened, yeah, it does seem kinda suspicious.

The mother explained to the officer dispatched that her youngest son, Uriah Sharp, had delivered his papers to the wrong home and was picking them up. The cop "quickly determined" that's exactly what the Sharps were doing, according to police.

Huh: that is what happened.

I swear, the world would be a much better place if people just learned a simple lesson: the differences on the outside do not matter.  It is what is on the inside that counts.

Make the penalty match the crime: force the 911 abusers to staff the phones for a few unpaid shifts, on Friday and Saturday nights.

The nosy neighbor spied the 12-year-old boy, who is black, hop out of a van and walk up to a handful of Upper Arlington homes Friday

Ahhh, I see the problem.

/For those not from Ohio, UA is Columbus' Bel Air. I get the stink eye as a middle-aged white man who deigns to drive through their neighborhood in a Honda.

When i was in college I was getting married, and I applied for this swanky complex and did not think I would get a place there, but I did.

So every night someone would knock on my door and ask for Maria, and I said no Maria lived here.  And it was at all hours.

So one night at about 1 am I am coming home with my girl, gonna get my groove on, and I happened to wearing a Tshirt with a Colombian Flag Tshirt

Dude is walking up to my place, and says "Hey you took Maria's place, let me get two 8 balls"

Turns out Maria, was a coke dealer who got arrested, and the apartment complex like to have a token latino, and I was it.

They would not let me out of the lease until I starting calling the cops every time someone knocked on my door.

"Hello, 911? I'd like to report a white lady acting suspiciously. I'm black and minding my own business and she's not calling 911 on me, don't you think that's suspicious? You'll send cops right away? Great. I'll be here waiting for my beating when they arrive."

Would it really play out fair?  Because that's when cops start arresting people for making false calls.  What seems fair and how it really plays out can be two different things.

That city is weird.  It's just an overgrown college town.  They have 4 sports radio channels.  I don't trust a city the size of Indianapolis with 4 radio stations dedicated to Ohio State sports.

Really?  Because she saw them walk up to a house with nothing and leave with something?  I don't know.  I might be less likely to call if it was a black person, for fear of looking racist.  But I'd absolutely call if I saw a white person doing that.

Unlike all of the other stories in the past couple months with racist "Permit Patty" type women, this genuinely sounds like a misunderstanding. Though I'm not sure if it is appropriate to use the 911 system for someone stealing newspapers.

I normally would join in this white folks being white hate-fest, but it seems like the neighbor just saw something that looked suspicious. Anyone walking up to homes empty handed, and returning to a vehicle with an object in hand, would probably raise a question to any reasonable person.
Cops came out, saw that there was a reasonable explanation, and everyone moved on with their lives.
We need to save the outrage for real issues, or it just becomes noise in the background that everyone ignores.

Now read it without the qualifiers:

The neighbor spied the 12-year-old boy, hop out of a van and walk up to a handful of homes Friday. She initially assumed he was delivering newspapers, she told authorities, but soon thought otherwise.
"I noticed they were walking up to houses with nothing in hand and one of them came back with something," the 911 caller said, according to WSYX-TV. "It seemed kind of suspicious."

My neighbors across the street used to call the cops on us all the time when we were kids. We were playing kickball once and the old bat came out of the house, grabbed the ball and ran inside. My mom called the cops on her that time.

I don't want these idiots attempting to handle a real emergency.

I agree with "The Root."

Second unfounded call--$100.00 fine
Third--$250.00

There HAS TO BE MORE to the story. This biased media probably left the part out above how they were casing the neighborhood for their next newspaper drop!  If only America's Neighborhood Watch Captain were here. He'd know what to do!

Yeah, if I saw someone of ANY race that I didn't know walk up to a neighbors house empty handed, pickup the newspaper, and walk back to a van I'd be curious. Suspicious? Dunno.

The thing is, at least around here, it's common to put something out on your porch and then email the mailing list to say "got a gently used toddler's booster seat on my porch... first come first served!" So, it wouldn't be unheard of for someone to make a pickup from a neighbors porch.

I think that's where the race comes into play as to how we subconsciously perceive that pickup.

I'd rather not give the people already abusing the 911 system the power to basically SWAT every call coming on from a black neighborhood. Let them mop the floors in there instead.

As for The Root's fine method, I would be xoncerncoit could be corrupted into a "snitch's fee." "Oh you saw someone who sounds like our dealer prowling around? Here's a ticket, mind your damn business, citizen."

Is she? She saw a person get out of a van empty handed, walk up to a house and return with something in his hands.  That's not suspicious to you?  I have now had multiple deliveries stolen from my porch in the past year.

This wasn't black kids cutting grass.  This wasn't black families having a BBQ.  This wasn't black people at a pool in their own neighborhood.  This was something which, on its face, was actually suspicious and a legitimate reason to call the police.

Are these the people that deliver papers that nobody has ever ordered and don't want? I've always been confused about that business model.

And she won too - the black lady is taking her kids off that paper route.

She shoulda stayed on the route and made a point to wave hello at the b*tch every morning.  Or refuse to deliver to her house citing concern for her safety...

This woman may just be a racist monster, but at the same time it might've looked like someone stealing packages. Hopping out of a van, running up to the porch, grabbing something and running back to the van and then driving a few houses down again.

I wish someone called the cops on the people who stole the packages off my porch a few weeks before Christmas two years back.

Apologists for this kind of vicious hatred are just deluding themselves and no one else.  NOTHING at all would have happened if it had been a white kid.   White kids dig holes in the other peoples yards and the worst they can expect is having an old person come outside and yell at them.  Everyone else would say, "Aw, how cute."
But if a black kid walks up empty handed to a house it's, "OMG it's a gang-banging thug in training!!!!"

We also should determine if she called "911" or did she (and really all of these people) call the non-emergency number. In my county the non-emergency number and 911 all ring into the same call center.  The only real difference is that the computer system gives precedence to callers who used 911 and not callers who used the non-emergency number.  Non-emergency numbers are for exactly that "hey, this looks suspicious, could you send an officer out to check."

HideAndGoFarkYourself:

I can see calling the cops - specifiallsp the cops directly. A lot of jurisdictions have a direct line for small stuff, which this would likely count as if they weren't actively breaking through doors or grabbing armfuls of goods. The emergency lines in a lot of towns are overrun by idiots who simply don't know there are non-emergency numbers for authorities, or can't be bothered
to look them up.

For you youngsters who might be confused about the whole situation, a paperboy is a person, usually an adolescent male, who manually delivers newspapers to individual houses.  It's kind of like food delivery but with physical things to read.  Okay, now stay with me here.  Newspapers are like blogs, but they are made from trees.  The actual delivery is partially complete in that it requires some action by the receiver to close the process.  It's like email, where the recipient has to open the email, except for newspapers, the recipient has to physically retrieve the newspaper from a physical inbox, which is usually the porch, yard, tree, roof or dog.

FYI, Ohio is the last bastion of tradition paperboys in the US.
