I don't know how zip-lines work. But i would imagine you send one person down at a time. When 1st person reaches the end the 2nd person can start.

This "freak accident" probably could've been avoided.

It's probably one of those really long zip lines, but the staff are willing to send people early instead of making the line wait.  Most of the time, there could be a long enough time delay between the riders to safe, till someone comes to a stop.

i feel bad for the people who were in line behind them.   Good folks were probably waiting in the tropical heat for quite sometime with the other disembarked passengers just for these two to screw up everyone else's fun.

I was suspecting that was the issue. Still, I feel sorry for the wife in this story. I can't imagine finding the love of your life, getting married, planning ahead for a future and then having him crash into you on a zip-line and dying while on a honeymoon. The story didn't mention the actual cause of death did it? Did he hit his head and crack it open? Did he break his neck? Did he fall off his zip thingy and crash to the ground?

She's going to need a lot of therapy to get over this.

I went ziplining once with my mother in law.. was her idea, not exactly my cup of tea but it was enjoyable.  The entire group walked to a particular zip line station, one "ranger" (leader) went down the line by themselves and then sent a message over radio / walkie talkie that the were ready. Each person went down one-by-one and the next person wasn't sent down until the ranger at the bottom gave the all clear.

I figured that was SOP.   Sad and completely unavoidable.

You're pretty well secured in those things so I'm guessing he broke his neck or crushed/punctured something vital when he hit her. It would have taken more than a few minutes to get him down so the same injury might not have been fatal on the ground.

If this was a cruise-sponsored excursion, they just got blacklisted. You don't screw with their revenue stream.

It's nowhere near as severe on the ground.

Don't do dangerous touristy stuff like ziplining or parasailing in countries with few, if any, safety regulations.

Oh I am sure the cruise-line or tourist agency had really nice glossy pamphlets that gave it the appearance of being safe...I've never been to any zip line or so but I would think any company running an activity would have a sign out front with really tiny print...."This ride can cause death. Ride at your own risk."

I've been hooked onto a cable of one of Thailand's tallest towers. 54 storeys.
It's not a zip line, though. It's a controlled descent as the cable moves.

That said, I've never bungee-jumped, so was excited to do that in the same trip (along with gokarting and cable-waterskiing).
When we reached the bungee place, saw how filthy it was, not over water, but suspended from a crane, and that they "can inflate the emergency air cushion if I wanted" and I so very politely AND very firmly declined.

/would still give it a go if in better condition and over water

Almost similar story. While in the US Army, I was approached by an Army Ranger recruiter Sgt asking me if I would "try out to be a Ranger"

Well not knowing much about that elite group of people, I causally asked this Sgt, "Don't Rangers jump out of perfectly good airplanes?"

His response..."no one said they were perfectly good airplanes son."

No, hamsters and dogs are thrilled by activities that require effort. This is slightly smarter than that.

johndalek: Wow.  Bang - you're dead

Ok lets look at the details....or lack of...

1. How fast is one going down this zip line?
2. How did she become "stuck"? Did her zip thingy just stop in the middle of the ride? Bad pulley or some other mechanical defect?
3. If traveling at a high rate of speed, and he's zooming down the line, did he see her? Did he put out his feet to stop the impact. Did he call out her name before they crashed?
4. Did she see her husband coming down the line or was she facing the other direction?

Either way...its a horrible accident. I feel sorry for her. I really do.

I've been to Roatan, beautiful reefs, but not somewhere I'd consider doing anything like zip- lining. A mix of ramshackle houses & tourist areas, with armed guards with automatic rifles outside most banks & cash rich businesses.

Definitely a place you should seriously consider a cruise sponsored activity if you're not used to getting hassled by locals as soon as you leave the cruise area bubble.

1st time there we took a cruise & figured we'd wing it & get to the beach in our own.  After the 3rd cab driver tried to rip us off ($45 per person to just get to the beach) we turned around & went back to the activity person & just booked one.   Went back & stayed there for a week & made all the arrangements ahead of time so there was no hassle.

Came here for this.  I am always amazed when I see tourists go parasailing or something like that with a couple sketchy looking people in a barely operational boat.  I guess that's part of the thrill for them.

Well it depends.  There are reputable places even in absense of regulation, although they usually cost a little extra. Not sure about Honduras but in Costa Rica the zip lining place I went to was engineered in Switzerland and seemed incredibly safe. (took a tram to the top and zip lined down).

Although we drove by some that looked more like this:
