I doubt Kevin would be interested in Robin Wright opening up for him.

"I didn't really - I didn't know the man."

I guess she didn't want to Penn herself in with her answers.

I have loose friendships with numerous business associates and former classmates, and I could tell you jack sh*t about their 'real' lives outside of my interaction with them. Some people are more of an open book than others.Hell, even some of my best friends are pretty private about their life. In fact, I would say I only really know a handful of people, especially when it comes to things like their sex life.

Also, bold fail.

100% of everything I know about my coworkers is everything they've told me. Why should she be any different?

Or, alternatively: what are my specific duties when it comes to researching my coworkers to make sure I'm not working with criminals of one kind or another?

None. That's your employer's responsibility. (As it damn well should be.)

Basically what she is saying in the #metoo era is, "I really want to continue to work."

You also know what you've observed and heard at the water cooler.

It's been alleged that Spacey made the work environment hostile. It seems like a lot of people turned a blind eye and it was only after Rapp went public was action taken.

I'd imagine there's a certain amount of cover for bad behavior baked into that particular system, since Spacey is a big-time actor who was specifically on set to play an oily, murderous sociopath who does uncomfortable things. I made the mistake of recommending that show to my mom a few episodes into season one, and then I saw that exquisitely horrifying sex scene between Spacey and Kate Mara's characters. That seems like a show where if they were doing it right, everybody is on edge.

Which doesn't excuse a blessed thing, but it'd go a long way towards explaining.

This has been an open secret in Hollywood for years. Sure, maybe they were just rumors at the time, but there sure were a lot of them.

It's sort of like the Cosby thing. The accusations were there forever. It wasn't until Hannibal Burress went viral with a bit about Cosby did anything come about.

I'm willing to bet these people know they're in a dark room full of cockroaches. They're either afraid to shine the flashlight directly, or just refuse to.

I found that I had been working for a convicted felon without knowing it once my paychecks started bouncing.  Turns out that between lease fraud, check kiting, grand theft auto, and a few other crimes... not a single thing about the business was legitimate.

He had set the entire thing up with his wife's social security number to avoid scrutiny.  And the worst part of it is I found that one of the managers knew about his background and didn't tell the rest of us until after the ponzi scheme fell apart.

The people who wouldn't have believed her had she spoken out are now chastising her for turning a blind eye? Why do I care what they think?

I've been a part of communities where people have been willing to say a lot of unfounded things about me (none of them criminal allegations mind you), and it's both easy to believe and easy to dismiss, depending on how much you actually know about the person, who tells you, and how much you want in with them.

If it changed to actionable allegation rather thab disregarded rumor because credible sources citing credible facts were presented, well, that's how it's supposed to work, isn't it?

But I believe Wright when she says she didn't know anything.

For some definitions of "this."  Spacey's preference for being rougher than most people prefer has been an open secret.  Failing to gain consent from his partners or using coercion to get "consent?"  I don't think that was part of the stories, at least as I've heard them.

I have worked with people in offices and not socialiazed with them outside of the office. So everything I knew about them was what they told me.

Pretty sure their behavior at work is something they're telling me, but sure, let's examine that idea.

See, coworker repeatedly microwaves fish in the break room or yells at people he finds incompetent or treats them badly for not living up to his expectations, he's telling you he's an asshole and kind of a pain to work with. If you or anyone say "wow. That kind of disregard for people he works with? Sheesh. He probably rapes, too" based on that, you're reaching into assumptions that, while not *worthless*, are not things you explicitly know.

[and as I said above about rumors within communities, what you're willing to believe via word of mouth doesn't equal what is true]

I once worked with a blonde hottie who told me:

She was upset with her boyfriend at the time because he wouldn't cum in her mouth.
She liked having lesbian threesomes.
She once had a MMF threesome.  She said the double facial at the end made her feel like a whore.
She had a sex swing.
Never had anal sex.
Kept her pubic hair in a landing strip.

Looking back she sure told me a lot of stuff. Yikes.

Yikes indeed.  I don't think I'd want to know that much about a co-worker.  I'm in IT, I only care about if you are having computer issues.  I might like to hear about what books or games someone likes but that's it.

I hang with my clique at the office all the time. I don't know if they're circumcised or anything but I think work would be pretty boring if you couldn't make friends. But Hollywood people are usually assholes so I guess that's different. The guys from Supernatural though for example were each other's best men at their weddings, that's pretty cool.

I'm a little annoyed that, considering Rapp's most famous role, when the story first broke, I didn't see any headlines reading "Kevin Spacey Taken Down by Rent Boy."

Cool, and I do not doubt it about that group, but I have to say that at the end of the day no matter how close you are with someone, you never really, truly know them. I was best friends with a guy in college that was a part of my core group; he was my best man and I would have been his had he not already promised it to his brother years before we met. But something weird happened after he met his soon-to-be wife. He pulled away from the core group in a way that none of the other members did after meeting a spouse. They made grand promises to friends and family about how they would be there for each other and even deliberately picked a house two doors down from one set of friends to move into so they "could raise [their] kids together". Then one day they up and moved and told no one. Then they would call, but only if they wanted something, but would never return calls. They lied to all of us, like a LOT, and we (the core) started comparing notes and caught them in a web of lie after lie after lie.

He and his wife deliberately chose to burn all of us in that group of friends one at a time until we were all done with them. Years later many of us compared notes and even found out that he had started talking shiat about us to each other and caused rifts that we didn't realize were there until later when this crap all got aired out publicly and the core started to see the commonalities.

I have to reiterate: this man was *nothing* like that for the four years we knew him before a year into the marriage to SheSatan®. From that point forward it was all downhill. Hell, I even explained all of this to him just to see how he would react, and he... didn't. Any normal person would have had some kind of emotional feedback, positive or negative, either denial or anger or something other than indifference.

That was a real blow that taught me, a guy who in his 30s at the time it happened and is/was pretty jaded, that sometimes it's best just to keep humans at a safe, healthy distance because you really never know what they are capable of.

Yeah, that's probably right. My two best friends I knew since kindergarten. One of them, we had a band, my mom and his parents are best friends. I know more about him than his wife does. And that wife of his is a farking biatch, even his mom says so to my mom, so we can't even hang together anymore. It's a sad state of affairs. Maybe there's something to be said for not getting too tight with someone.
