I wonder what the local dairies think of his milk crate collection.

/Back in the 80s the local dairy would walk outside the college dorms and take note of all of their stolen milk crates and the school would leave an empty room open with a sign "all stolen crates go in here, no questions asked.  Anyone with stolen crates after X date will have charges filed against them."
//Every year some moran would ignore it and get charged

OK, for people in the EU where this site is blocked, and old man is selling golf balls. 70,000 golf balls to be exact.

That seems like too many to be sure no two balls were duplicates

70,000 golf balls? This is an obsessive-compulsive disorder, not a hobby.

Heh.. right, so we're calling hoarders "collectors" now?

The crates contain some 70,000 balls - no two alike.

I'm trying to figure out how they arrived at this conclusion. It's not like golf balls have the date stamped on them....did he only collect one ProVx #1? Still cool though. My buddy's father has a home next to a golf course, he collects the ones that make their way into his yard, which averages 20/day on the weekend. He gives me at least 6 dozen new-ish balls every year.

I'm a volunteer driver for the local seniors.  I was driving one cantankerous old guy, and we learned that we're both fantasy/science fiction readers...  I have some 600 books in my library, and he has approximately... enough to fill a 26' Uhaul, from top to bottom.  Entire rooms stacked chest high, every wall surface in his house shelved.  About half of it was old magazines, some really amazing stuff... crawling with vermin and in horrible condition.

He wanted to sell it to me, or trade it to me, or just give it to a good home before he died.  I sadly, have no budget for rescuing, cleaning, maintaining and climate controlled storage of such a project.

70,000? That might be enough if I ever played a round of golf. (Again)

Came to say this.

Also, are there really 70k different brands and styles of golf balls? I'm sure there would be a lot over the years, but 70k seems a little high, unless his "no two alike" means "Look, this one has a scratch in it, and this one has a grass stain..."

America is supposed to be a Republic, wherein the government and it's agents are required to follow the law and are susceptible to criminal prosecution for failure to do so.  You would think that a party named after this principle would remember that.

No, but he counts logos.  Titleist prov1 #1 Mayo Clinic logo.  Titleist prov1 #2 Mayo Clinic logo.  Titleist prov1x #1....

I bet you could get about 100 permutations using only titleist balls and 1 logo.

"I couldn't get her off the golf course and she couldn't get me on to play with her," Smith says. "So, I'd just go hunting golf balls while she played."

Hunting for wayward golf balls, then determining whether it already exists in your 70,000 piece collection seems about as exciting as watching paint dry. But still, the guy deserves credit for finding something more exciting than playing or watching golf.
