FYI, "the charge will be withdrawn" is cop-speak for "the charge won't be withdrawn, but we're trying to trick you into skipping your court date so we can break your farking door down serving the bench warrant."

Just glad this was in Canada, so the black cyclist didn't get shot.

I like how this is their only comment.  No remorse or apology. Instead, they try to pull a we dropped the matter so get over it already move.

I'd prefer that they ticket the assholes who think that stop signs don't apply to bicyclists, bicyclists who think it's appropriate to ride their bikes through crosswalks (it's not), ride on the sidewalk (grrr), and fail to ride single file (in Maine, it's the law.)

It's really not that hard to not ride a bike like a douchebag. I manage quite well.

Didn't watch past the first couple of minutes, but the cyclist is yelling and is doing what sounds like pounding on the car. I'd call for some additional cops too, just so there'd be some assistance in case it escalated from there.

Nice to see squealers in other country's are just as stupid.

It's now at a point that I'd trust a criminal over a cop any day.
At least with the criminal you know what you are dealing with.

"The officer acted in good faith"

I have been assured that ignorance of the law is no excuse.  Especially considering his line of work is called "law enforcement", you would think he would be familiar with them.

Cyclist kinda seems like a dick a d may have been riding in lane for no reason, which is a dick move. Certainly not required to stay in a bike lane though, for example when turning left its necessary.

This was my favorite part of description:

"11:20 Several cyclists pass the officers, cyclist, and cruiser vehicle, riding in the traffic lane, since the officer has parked his car in the bike lane "

Tee hee hee way to make the problem. Also doesn't shock me if cop passed cyclist too close (law here says 1 meter minimum distance to pass). Toronto cops are kinda dicks. Seems like the cop was being a dick.

Rolling "stops" at stop signs are not a big deal provided you yield for right of way traffic. I think here in Utah they codified that into the books.

Agree, stay off the sidewalks, and if you do then you won't be in a crosswalk either.

Keep in mind it's not easy walking in those fancy cycling shoes. Much easier and safer to stay on the bike.

Now, let's talk about the spandex.

I'm not a cop, but around here cops get (usually 1 extra car as) backup, whenever they pull someone over.

1:40 Cyclist asks if he's free to go, officer tells him he is not free to go.
1:44 Cyclist asks the officer to let him know when he's free to go. Several times.
2:00 More screen shots of traffic laws
2:00-2:30 Basically just the cyclist repeating,"Let me know"

Yeah, the cop was being a dick. But the cyclist was being a huge dick as well. See:5:00 Cyclist starts asking for supporting officers names and badge numbers, which they provide, then calls one a "dickhead"
5:55 Audio goes silent as cyclist states his own name
6:10 Supporting officer asks cyclist what he was doing, and the cyclist reviews scenario. As part of his explanation, he starts slapping the original officer's sideview mirror. A third responding officer starts yelling at him for doing this, confirms the cyclist will be issued a ticket. It's still unclear for what offense.

Honestly, he probably would not have been given a ticket, once he explained what was going on to the backup officers. Which were, ya know, doing their job by trying to find out what happened by talking to him. Or they could always just take the first cop's word for it, which would have made him just as mad.

9:50 Cyclist describes the officers to a passer-by with several colourful insults.
10:00 Cyclist chats with an off-camera about maybe visiting B.C. in the future
10:20 Another off-camera pedestrian offers to fill the cyclists water bottle with ice. He accepts appreciatively.
10:30 After a period of relative calm, cyclist again shouts at original officer asking if he's done writing his ticket, which he has been writing for over five minutes at this point.

At this point you can be sure they're just attempting to make everything as godsawful for you as possible, so you're free to incorrigibly heckle the piss out of them until they look like they wish to hit you

Other people just eat that shiat up sometimes.

I think slapping the sideview mirror of a police cruiser crosses the line of "calling out a pushy cop." Like, come on, that's asking for trouble.

Not here.  Although I rarely see a 'real' cyclist.  They're all just biking along, no special gear.  However, it's rare to see one obeying the law.  Mostly staying out of the way when they don't have to, by riding on sidewalks, or changing which side of the road they're on to be out of the way of traffic.  Although, the last time I saw a real cyclist, he was obeying the law completely, and a woman in a pickup blew her horn at him.  Basically most people in my county don't know what the law pertaining bikes say, it's just a mess.

I saw cyclist before she did, and simply changed lanes.  She went with, not moving one inch, miss him by less than a foot, then blow horn.  A few other drivers followed my lead.

A bicycle legally operates as a vehicle (unpowered) and can use the roadway as long as they follow the applicable laws. Bike lanes are an encouraged alternative, but sometimes may not be safe or practical.

Meanwhile no powered vehicles are allowed on bicycle/pedestrian lanes. So cars have no legal reason to be in a bike lane, barring emergency vehicles with authorization.

10, 15 years ago I found myself driving behind cyclists insisting on slowing down car traffic and only the little voice stopped me from plowing them over on a regular basis.  Doesn't seem to be a thing these days, but maybe it's just where I go now...my fellow mountain bikers are as proportionally douchey as ever.

Because of entitled assholes like this. There's a bike lane but he refuses to use it because he'd rather take up a traffic lane to prove some stupid point.

But don't you farking dare park you car and block the bike lane. He'll shame you on facebook live so fast your head will spin.

I didn't even RTFA (that's not what I'm interested in here), but for sake of argument, I'll agree this guy was an entitled asshole. F*ck him.

Why does that mean I should hate cyclists?

lack of warmth: grumpfuff: This text is now purple: grumpfuff: I never got Fark's hate of cyclists. Yea, sure, there's the occasional asshole, but by and far they don't bother me.

I don't know what people are angry about thing, says man unaffected by thing.

This may come as a shock to you, but sometimes people try to understand things that don't affect them.

Maybe it's just because my area has plenty of bike lanes and such, but most of the cyclists around here follow the rules.

This, on the other hand, is a MUCH better explanation. Like you said, in a lot of places, the laws are a mess, and that leads to confusion.

Seems to me the solution is to clean up the laws and get people educated on them, not to hate cyclists.

THIS!

i have been yelled at to "get on the sidewalk" when there wasnt one, and in Ohio where riding on the sidewalk as an adult alone is technically against the law.

I had people scream "get a car!"  Not knowing i have 2.

Spent a weekend at a city event trying to educate both cyclists and motorists about the law and how to respect each other. At least twice an hour drivers marched up to me to tell me how all cyclists in this town are a nuisance and if they get run over its their fault.

Learn the laws, folks. It helps, a lot.

arcgear: Love it when they feel intimidated, so they call for one of their little buddies to stand away and menace you from several feet back.

At this point you can be sure they're just attempting to make everything as godsawful for you as possible, so you're free to incorrigibly heckle the piss out of them until they look like they wish to hit you

Other people just eat that shiat up sometimes.

/oh, the stories.

So much this.

Cops in S. Florida pulled this same crap on me and my buddy for fishing In the intercoastal at his apt complex. Some old biddy called the police on us because she didn't recognize us.

We were accused of "trespassing" and when i started to give the cop crap he called for backup. Soon there's 4 cops standing there harassing us for fishing. So I started with the stream of insults and didn't stop for 15 minutes. I called them every name in the book. The one lead cop who was about 5'4" got the worst of it. Some examples:

"How does such a small man carry such a big chip on his shoulder?"
"Little tough guy"
"Officer Napoleon Complex"
One for the lady cop: "Why don't you shut the hell up when men are talking?"
And on and on and on. They were pissed.

Finally my friends dad came down with his ID to prove he lived there and had a few choice words for the cops as well.

Finally they knew they were beat and Officer Napoleon Complex says "you're free to go".

Response: "Fark you pig, I'm not going anywhere, YOU'RE FREE TO GO".

Quite an adrenaline rush, I gotta say.

In conclusion, fark the police.

YouPeopleAreCrazy: lack of warmth: YouPeopleAreCrazy: lack of warmth: There was a bike lane, and cyclist refuses to use it?  That's on the same level as left lane camper.  He is intentionally being in other people's way.  Change the law, they should use the bike lane as much as possible.

OK.
Change the law first. Then you can see about tickets.

Till then, arrest him for disorderly conduct.  His behavior would've gotten that charge anywhere in the US, unless he suffers from affluenza.  Then when his team of overpriced lawyers show up, the charges would be dropped.

And until then, don't pull people over for stuff that is not illegal.

That's funny, because I don't know one person without an illegal traffic stop story.  I have two, one resulted in a made up ticket; different states.  I still behaved well to avoid going to jail, because I understood the odds of a judge dropping an arrest charge despite there was no legal reason to stop me is like winning the lottery.  Last time I heard of a judge doing that, they changed the law so the next time a cop wants to stop someone for nothing, they had another primary reason for a traffic stop.

This guy won the lottery, however, they make it so the next time will make the arrest charges stick.
