Story telling is a lost art.
This guy exceeds at telling spooky ones.

All it needs is retold with a shaky cam and you have a summertime blockbuster here.

I've got a CD player in my car, and the DVD player in my computer will play CD's.  The PS4 should as well.

I have all that except a PS4 and I have a boombox.

I have 6 of them. Just about the only modern recorded formats I can't play are 8 track and cassette, because let's face it - they suck ass.

My mother worked at a small town rural newspaper in the 80's and 90's. She once shared a letter with me that was sent to the newspaper. It was painstakingly typed out on a manual typewriter with liquid paper all over it. Anyway, the gist of the thing was that quite a few people had her under surveillance from the bushes surrounding her home. Among the many, many people who had her under constant surveillance from the bushes were Bill Gates and Eddie Money.

Let's see..  Not counting my Blu-ray player, my gaming systems, or the drives in my multiple PCs, there are four CD players in my apartment.

\One Stereo
\\Two boombox types
\\\And a discman.

IIRC, the PS4 lacks audio CD playback support.  There are a ton of forum threads out there with people wondering why a music company released hardware that cannot play its own product.

3 computers, a blu-ray player, and both our cars.
I still prefer to buy my music on physical media, then rip it myself.

What's that you say  there subby?

2018-06-19 04:14:01 PM
Hey now Subby, I have a small CD player/speaker/radio combo thingy which works fine and has lasted an unbelievable 23 years. I think it's enchanted. Everything else breaks down before 90 days.

2018-06-19 04:15:22 PM
Anyone with a DVD player, PlayStation, or car manufactured after about 1995 has at least one CD player. Not sure what subby is talking about.

"No one owns a CD player any more"? So, subby, *how* old and k3wl are you... 16?

I really do need to burn my VCR tapes to disk, though, and the cassette tapes, too. And then there's my USB turntable I really ought to use..... And I have thousands of these things made from shredded trees called "books".....

No, the author is Hemingway reborn. "The envelope has a typed letter and a C-D inside. On the C-D is a man telling a story for about 40 minutes."

I opted for the CLD-D501 instead, because it shuttled the laser so I never had to flip the LDs while watching a movie. I still use it now and again when I want to watch the unadulterated version of The Empire Strikes Back or the non-"Director's Cut" of Pink Floyd Live at Pompeii.

Anyway, I don't even want to tell you how much I spent on that ridiculous machine, and when I was in college and had no money, to boot. I practically worked all summer to make enough to buy that thing. But at 25 years of occasional use, I guess I got my money's worth after all.

I keep a Laserdisc player around, in part, because I found that it can read damaged CDs that no other player in the house can handle.  I just run the digital out line to my PC and then record the tracks to audio files.

I still do the same. Hard drives and iPods break and fail, but I'll be able to pull out those CDs and re-rip them for life.

Or how much you spent for the movies, especially all of the director's cuts that were common on LD.  I have one boxed edition that was over $60 when I bought it.

Referring to it as a C-D is the icing on the cake.  You can hear the air quotes.

I laughed when I saw a portable CD player in a recent Fry's e-mailer.

I have a laserdisc player in on a shelf in the room of storage.  It was my grandpas and was probably used a dozen times, tops.  Not really sure why I kept it except the chances of getting another one in good condition are pretty much zero.

Pffft. I keep an Audio Technica turntable on the back seat of my AMC Pacer.  You haven't lived until you're tooling down the highway at 70 and drop the needle on a Japanese vinyl issue of Aqualung.

Because they don't want you to own the product on physical media that you paid for once.

They want you to lease the product from them via a recurring subscription fee, so you pay for it over and over in perpetuity.

\Also when you only have access to content via streaming, the content on the server can be edited
\\At which point the original may no longer be available
\\\Though that is a bit tinfoil hatty, I acknowledge.

I have an old boombox with a CD player in the hall closet. A few years ago my son, age 10 at the time, asked what it was.

 what's a cassette?

Well you need to teach him radio, since that's what feeds information to his cell phone (just on a different wavelength).

As for the rest, just hope he doesn't learn about vinyl and get snooty on how analog has a "warmer sound".

At a friend's house:

Me: Turn it clockwise.
Friend's daughter: What's "clockwise"?
Me: Same direction a record spins.

I know "clockwise" but I couldn't have told you a record turns that way.

(a) what's so hard about saying clockwise = top goes right?
(b) ...or clockwise = tightening a screw?
(c) my android phone has an analog clock display.

I will admit though, apparently Windows has gotten rid of the default analog clock.
Lots of cars have analog clocks though, if they want to appear a little upscale.

My Criterion multi-aspect ratio dual disc CAV special edition of Dr. Strangelove (complete with Civil Defense PSAs and "My Teenage Fallout Queen") set me back $85 in 1995. I can't even remember how much the widescreen collector's edition of the Star Wars Trilogy cost. It might even have been $200. What fools we were...
