If anyone else wants to get in the armor testing business: DO IT ON A DUMMY!

And I don't mean a living person of below average intelligence. I mean a non-living, full of gelatin or stuffing, dummy.

The misadventure part of the equation is that he expected the vest to stop the knife.

Be surprised if it worked though...

For all those saying that the vest wasn't stab proof, this is NOT a case of someone thinking that their bulletproof vest is stab proof and failing (we've had a few of those here).
This was a case of a guy who thought his JACKET was stab proof.

Article doesn't even mention why.

Wait...FTA:
"DS Butcher said the witness statements taken all tallied with each other and the relevant evidence such as toxicology results."
Ah, there you go.

The real question is "Why did a 22-year-old from Thornaby want an anti-stab vest?"

Well, since the little scroat had a long record for assault and burglary (http://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/news/14034604.Robber_jailed_after_mugging_pregnant_young_mum_in_the_street/ ) I think it's pretty safe to assume that he was planning yet another crime. Somebody has had a lucky escape.

I wonder if this woman or her friends threw the party and offed the little scum bucket? Hell they could have been the ones suggesting to him that the jacket was stab proof....

Let me guess, the bereaved family will sue whatever company he got the item from for "false advertising".
aaand if it was Amazon this'll probably make the news as Amazon being irresponsible for selling potentially dangerous things to idiots. again.

No, this is the UK. The family in whose home he died in will be arrested for 100 years for owning a sharp knife.

I thought this was going to be one of those, "man thought his bulletproof vest could stop knives" stories.  For reasons I don't understand, body armor seems only able to be made against bullets or knives, but not both, right now.

I actually read the entire article which is rare for daily fail trying to figure out his thought process in why he thought said top was stab proof.   Was it a Kevlar vest?  Did it have plates?   Was it advertised as such?

So many unanswered questions.

Weight is the factor that they don't make both.   Bullet proof vests with plates can stop a knife if they go for the plate.

Translation: Vests, even bullet proof ones, don't stop blades very well, but ceramics do just fine.

dkulprit:

After the Akihabara massacre, a company in Osaka started making heavy plastic threaded T-shirts that were slash resistant.

He might have gotten something like that, or did his own modifications.  I have a breastplate I made out of office supplies that can stop a kitchen knife.

Agreed. I did find this.
"Our overt stab resistant vests are hard-wearing and reliable, featuring world-renowned fabrics such as Cordura ®,Coolmax ® and Gore-Tex ®. SafeGuard CLOTHING™ uses only ultra high grade layers of Kevlar® to protect against high impact edged-blade weapons."
My bet is his vest was made of Cordura or Gore-tex and he thought that was what what made it stab proof, not the kevlar plates.
Also every picture seems to show him in a tracksuit (NTTAWWT) but he doesn't exactly look like the type of dude who would drop $200+ on a vest

Look, the full police report said the knife was a Ginsu. A Ginsu can cut all the way through a freaking soda can and then immediately go on to cut a tomato into a thousand paper thin slices. So, that jacket could've been lined with vibranium and he still wouldn't have had a chance. Hell, I bet I could cut an entire planet in half with an appropriately sized Ginsu - like, a machete or something - and I'm not even talking about a gaseous one either.
