Dr. Frankenstein just had the realization of what he created.

Here's hoping his creation turns on him as well so he can truly see the monster he made.

Religion is the opiated of the asses.

And I say that as domdond who supports religion in all facets. Those that have soup kitchens and help the poor. Not that Joel Osteen bullsh*t.

Ah. . . I still remember the days when these guys were saying they were going to vote for Mitt Romney over Barack Obama, because, "Mitt Romney is a true Christian!"

These people are not smart.

Yeah, progress for sure. He's talking a structural rethinking.

I keep waiting for Evangelicals, white trash and rednecks to realize Jesus was long haired, bearded, wore flowing robes and sandals, hung out almost exclusively with men (and prostitutes) and drank wine. And, he was a Jew!

That was interesting.
Thanks subby.
I might look for that book next library trip.

Yeah...if they'd have Hillary in there, they'd have 4 years of incessant whining about liberals and gays and  fundraising...send me money , more money, we need money to stand up to Obama...ahhh. Hillary.

Their dog caught the bus. Deal with it.

If more Evangelicals could be just this reflective, our country would be in such a better place.

One is simply exercising self-doubt. We don't do that very well in evangelicalism. In fact, evangelicalism is built on a platform of asserting one's rightness-"I'm always right because the Bible is right."

Right or not, the goal isn't pride or power.

Schenck, still an activist to his core, is now a voice of ethical reform in American evangelicalism and public policy, specifically on gun safety.

Gays are still an abomination to him, I bet, but at least he's admitted he has a problem. It's rare someone realizes and admits they got their polar-opposite gods backwards, but good for him.

As someone who was raised in an evangelical church/household, this can't happen soon enough.

Whatsa matter Bub? Old age got you down? The Day of Reckoning approaching and you came to realize you would have to answer for your actions? You think you still have a chance to save your soul while laughing at all the others you said would go to Hell? Cheer up Bucky, God is a forgiving God, or so I'm told. You can do anything you want in life, sow any discord, create any chaos, and it's all cool with Jesus. You are forgiven. It's a big get-out-of-jail-free card so you can do whateverthefark you want and still get however many virgins Christianity promises. It's all cool.

nobody seems to be laughing anymore tho.

I would suggest that the assertion of right-ness comes from the fear that everything they believe is wrong. Science and interconnectedness have brought exposure to ideas that strongly challenge religious faith. One defense mechanism of human beings is to double down on ideas they hold dear, even if those ideas contradict reality. And one was to double down is to evangelize.

Evangelicals are never about what's right, they're about the extreme and outdoing one another in the name of God.

It's nice to see one acknowledge that it isn't going like he thought it would and having remorse is great, but it means nothing to the rest of them that will step in his spot and ratchet things up.

The entire machination exists in a way that if Pat Robertson expressed remorse they would immediately say he'd gone soft and was old and feeble and shouldn't be listened to.

Good luck with that shiat.

For these people, Jesus wore suits before suits existed and didn't actually mean about 95% of what he is supposed to have said. They also very much believe that he literally existed and that every one of his teachings has been exactly and correctly reported by some cosmic ghostwriter, and that none of it has been heavily edited by the multiple generations and cultures that the whole nonsense has been filtered through. They also like to assume that this person who that definitely existed and definitely actually said all of that shiat to begin with was not an all-powerful alien, because that would be ridiculous.

And he definitely wasn't brown, black, or Jewish, despite every logical aspect of his "existence" essentially requiring that.

they've made it very clear from the start that democracy is anti-christian.  their intention has always been to restrict the rights of others and turn this country into a christian theocracy.

The dotards don't rethink anything once they know 'the truth'. So evangelical preachers lamenting the mindfark they've done to the dotards is not going to have any effect other than the dotards will now vehemently reject these reformed preachers.

and that is why 40% of younger people in the US do not align with any church, with even more moving to less aggressive churches.

they have lived lavishly and clearly outside of the word of jesus christ. i wonder if they realize that if their own creed is true, that only hell awaits them? it seems like a few have started to figure it out as their own mortality creeps in on them and are feeling nervous. most of them seem to be atheists, determined to wring what earthly pleasure they can out of their followers before death. either way, they deserve no mercy for using their religious position to turn their back on the teaching of christ, in this life or the next

2018-06-08 11:59:11 PM
eventually, we (as a society and culture) are going to have to admit that all the lies, toxic theology, and sex abuse from all these christian churches is the mainstream and not the outlier.  christianity only does good incidentally, and has always been more concerned with political power than its stated goal of healing the sick and feeding the hungry.
