As I said yesterday on Facebook, my solution to the Roseanne show conundrum....

"It's a meme that she and thousands of her alt-right fans do," Arnold said. "They love calling black people monkeys. It's not a one time joke, OK. They do it because we have a white trash racist president. That's a fact. Donald Trump -- Roseanne and I have both known him 30 years. That's an absolute fact."

This is very much worth noting for many reasons.

He was also head writer of the original run for a while. Having said, he's not looking too healthy.

That was 30 years ago. I am pretty certain I will look "not too healthy" when I am in my mid 60s, as well, compared to now.

True Lies was a great movie, and he really stole the show in it.  He was definitely a high point, played a great sidekick.  Funny as all heck.

Eliza Dushku was another one. . .and Jamie Lee Curtis was still. . .

It was just a pretty dang awesome movie, with him as a high point.

. . .and that's why they killed the sequel that was in development (that and Schwarzenegger's political career putting his movie career on hiatus for a while).

I still like the movie.  The Arab terrorist thing didn't bother me as much, it just seemed even more plausible, but yeah, they had a sequel under development which 9/11 basically killed.

I said the same on the first day I heard of the reboot.  I'm sure a lot of Farkers did.

I just can't help but notice that the media seems more focused on this incident rather than the reports that the estimations for the death toll in Puerto Rico is 5000 people.

The timing just seems odd.

I re-watched it last year, and realized how much more aware I've become of certain things.  The scene where Arnold convinces Curtis to be more sexy for an international terrorist who is about to have sex with her whether she likes it or not?  I squirmed all the way through that shiat, and it was originally supposed to play as funny

No. In the setup for the hotel meeting, it is clearly explained to JLC's character that she wouldn't have to have sex; when she asked about that, the response mentioned specifically that "he likes to watch".

Yeah, "True Lies" is a movie that *really* hates women. It's extremely uncomfortable.  And the villains are portrayed as borderline retarded, which is also uncomfortable.

I used to like that movie. But as I've gotten older, it just seems crude and venal. It does have a lot of the old James Cameron magic, though. It's probably the last of his movies that "felt" like a Cameron movie. If it hadn't been so hateful towards women and Arabs.

Actually, it's easy to miss, in a way.

I don't know. I just know I re-watched it some years ago, and the way the women (all of them, but Jamie Lee in particular, obviously) are treated is just...sleazy. And the villain is such a caricature, that it borders on racism.

I think the problem is the tone of the movie, which if I remember correctly, was a problem at the time of its release, too. It can't decide if it wants to be a really violent action movie, or a comedy. It's jarring and uncomfortable. Which also makes it *interesting*, but still.

You know, since we seem to be talking about True Lies, but I noticed, even back then, that this movie genuinely hated women and was quite racist (which was the norm for many 80's action films tbh), but the constant switch from action to comedy and back is what got me off balance, but it all came together with the Itano Circus at the ending sequence, and I realized that James Cameron basically made a live action anime film. The way it was goofy yet action packed, it really felt like Cameron had bingewatched City Hunter and decided to make a movie from the experience.

It's very much a product of the time it was created.  It was almost 25 years ago, and a lot has changed in that period.  The caricatures and goofiness of the entire thing rings a bit differently than in the mid-90s.

For a comparison, if we were in the year True Lies came out about a movie with the same historical gap, we'd be bringing up Butch Cassidy, Night of the Living Dead, and Hello Dolly.

It wasn't a stranger. He's her husband. And she was seeing another guy behind his back so I think making her a little uncomfortable is justified. he wasn't doing it for kicks. She said she wanted some excitement and he was trying to make some for her. Also, they made it pretty clear that she was at least sort of enjoying herself when she was dancing.

No, thank you. I'm in a relationship.

And words mean things. Deliberately mischaracterizing someone's actions to try to make your point is disingenuous and intellectually dishonest. "Leaning over" and "crawling up on" are two very different actions, and that should be incredibly obvious.

Except go on a lunch date with Bill Paxton's (RIP) character (when he called her at the office), then go to his trailer safe house at night, drink with him, allow him to caress her leg and kiss her, and agree to go to Paris with him.

AFAArnoldWC she was having an affair, and he said as much to Tom Arnold's character. After her soliloquy in the holding facility he said he was going to give her the adventure she wanted by giving her an assignment.

No one was blameless, and - as I said - his being-a-spy/her pretending-to-be-a-spy situation was clearly bizarre and the normal rules of expected behavior were out the window.

2018-05-31 12:37:36 PM
Interesting side-note - Tom Arnold was the victim of sexual abuse as a child. When he was an adult he went back to his hometown and plastered flyers of the guy all over. Even went to his work and confronted him in front of his coworkers. Ballsy.

He might be there now, but he was willing to gnaw Roseanne's hair pie for personal benefit.
He was willing to reap rewards from her abusing her power and coworkers during the first run of the show.
